[Termes IGN] objet géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Geographical entities are characterized by rather complex structures. They involve space and thematic information, which is subject to change in time, while history should be maintained. On the other hand, these structures may be irregular (i.e. they do not necessarily conform to a fixed schema), because associated data is usually collected based on different specifications and multiple resolutions. Hence, the representation of geographical entities in traditional data models, such as the relational or object-oriented, is not always feasible. In this respect, this paper investigates the use of semi-structured data (SSD) models -an innovative approach recently developed in Information Technology- for modelling dynamic geographical entities. A framework for the representation of geographic entities in Object Exchange Model (OEM), a popular model for semistructured data, is introduced. Additionally, it is shown how useful information can be extracted from such a representation using the LOREL query language for SSD. A simplified case study in the application domain of cadastre involving SSD is examined closely. [Termes IGN] topologieRésumé : (Auteur) A very important class of queries in GIS applications is the class of Knearest neighbor queries. Most of the current studies on the Knearest neighbor queries utilize spatial index structures and hence are based on the Euclidean distances between the points. In realworld road networks, however, the shortest distance between two points depends on the actual path connecting the points and cannot be computed accurately using one of the Minkowski metrics. Thus, the Euclidean distance may not properly approximate the real distance. In this paper, we apply an embedding technique to transform a road network to a high dimensional space in order to utilize computationally simple Minkowski metrics for distance measurement. Subsequently, we extend our approach to dynamically transform new points into the embedding space. Finally, we propose an efficient technique that can find the actual shortest path between two points in the original road network using only the embedding space. Our empirical experiments indicate that the Chessboard distance metric (L,) in the embedding space preserves the ordering of the distances between a point and its neighbors more precisely as compared to the Euclidean distance in the original road network.

[Termes IGN] SIG ouvertRésumé : (Auteur) At this time, many problems hinder the development of web based applications relying on geographic information : the lack of interoperability between geographic data models implemented in GIS software, the use of proprietary programming languages, the weak capabilities of commercial GIS for the deployment of applications over the Internet, etc. In order to tackle these problems, numerous technologies in software engineering have emerged : standard and extensible object-oriented programming languages with web capabilities, development techniques based on reusable software components and model driven architectures, object-relational database management system enabling the storage and querying of geographic information. Taking benefit from all these more and more mature technologies, a new interoperable platform (named OXYGENE) has been designed and developed at the COGIT laboratory of IGN. It aims at providing an open framework for the development of research applications and allows for the centralisation of codes, their documentation and an easy maintenance/upgrade (preservation of researches). By embedding standard remote procedure call protocols and services description languages, this platform aims at deploying researches undertaken at the COGIT laboratory as true "geographic web services". The architecture and the model of the OXYGENE platform will first be presented and detailed. The development of geographic web services will then be discussed and illustrated with an example stemming from an application implemented at the COGIT laboratory. [Termes IGN] polarisationRésumé : (Auteur) Because of the low signal-to-clutter ratio, it is a difficult problem to detect and image moving targets in foliage. In this paper, a multifrequency multiaperture polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (MFMA POLSAR) system is proposed for imaging of moving targets in foliage. The MFMA POLSAR extends the multifrequency antenna array SAR (MFSAR) system to multiple the polarizations. Full polarization is used in MFMA POLSAR to achieve an optimal polarization adaptive to the environment such that the images obtained by different apertures are of the best coherence that is used to obtain the highest accuracy of the phase estimation. It is also shown that the MFMA POLSAR cannot only accurately locate both the slow and the fast moving targets but also reveal moving targets in foliage.
