[Termes IGN] topologieRésumé : (Auteur) Capabilities for collecting and storing data on mobile objects have increased dramatically over the past few decades. A persistent difficulty is summarizing large collections of mobile objects. This article develops methods for extracting and analyzing hotspots or locations with relatively high levels of mobility activity. We use kernel density estimation (KDE) to convert a large collection of mobile objects into a smooth, continuous surface. We then develop a topological algorithm to extract critical geometric features of the surface; these include critical points (peaks, pits and passes) and critical lines (ridgelines and course-lines). We connect the peaks and corresponding ridgelines to produce a surface network that summarizes the topological structure of the surface. We apply graph theoretic indices to analytically characterize the surface and its changes over time. To illustrate our approach, we apply the techniques to taxi cab data collected in Shanghai, China. We find increases in the complexity of the hotspot spatial distribution during normal activity hours in the late morning, afternoon and evening and a spike in the connectivity of the hotspot spatial distribution in the morning as taxis concentrate on servicing travel to work. These results match with scientific and anecdotal knowledge about human activity patterns in the study area. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In the last decade, research on database visualization has made great progress in automatically constructing charts composed of standard primitive charts. The next research challenge is to automatically construct non-standard charts which cannot be simply composed with standard primitive types of charts. One typical example is the chart of Napoleon’s Russian campaign of 1812. As to the challenge of automatic construction of such complex charts, we may classify conventional visualization frameworks into two categories. The first category asks users to procedurally define non-standard charts by programming. The second category asks users to declaratively define non-standard charts with their logical specification using a given library of graphical objects. Here we will propose a new visualization framework in the second category for automatically constructing non-standard charts from their logical specifications and discuss how to apply our framework to create custom-made geovisualization charts. Such a specification is described by one or more pairs of data view schemata (DVSs) and chart view schemata (CVSs). Each DVS is used for manipulating the data store in a database. Each CVS is used for defining the rendered appearances of the different chart components. Using our framework, users can easily re-create and extend such complex non-standard charts as the chart of Napoleon’s campaign by simply providing their logical specifications. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In geographic information science and semantics, the computation of semantic similarity is widely recognised as key to supporting a vast number of tasks in information integration and retrieval. By contrast, the role of geo-semantic relatedness has been largely ignored. In natural language processing, semantic relatedness is often confused with the more specific semantic similarity. In this article, we discuss a notion of geo-semantic relatedness based on Lehrer’s semantic fields, and we compare it with geo-semantic similarity. We then describe and validate the Geo Relatedness and Similarity Dataset (GeReSiD), a new open dataset designed to evaluate computational measures of geo-semantic relatedness and similarity. This dataset is larger than existing datasets of this kind, and includes 97 geographic terms combined into 50 term pairs rated by 203 human subjects. GeReSiD is available online and can be used as an evaluation baseline to determine empirically to what degree a given computational model approximates geo-semantic relatedness and similarity.
