Forced with observed atmospheric fluxes they gradually drift away from measured distributions of temperature and salinity. We suggest data assimilation of absolute dynamical ocean topography (DOT) observed from space geodetic missions as an option to reduce these differences. Sea surface information of DOT is transferred into the deep ocean by defining the analysed ocean state as a weighted average of an ensemble of fully consistent model solutions using an error-subspace ensemble Kalman filter technique. Success of the technique is demonstrated by assimilation into a global configuration of the ocean circulation model FESOM over 1 year. The dynamic ocean topography data are obtained from a combination of multi-satellite altimetry and geoid measurements. The assimilation result is assessed using independent temperature and salinity analysis derived from profiling buoys of the AGRO float data set. The largest impact of the assimilation occurs at the first few analysis steps where both the model ocean topography and the steric height (i.e. temperature and salinity) are improved. The continued data assimilation over 1 year further improves the model state gradually. Deep ocean fields quickly adjust in a sustained manner: A model forecast initialized from the model state estimated by the data assimilation after only 1 month shows that improvements induced by the data assimilation remain in the model state for a long time. Even after 11 months, the modelled ocean topography and temperature fields show smaller errors than the model forecast without any data assimilation. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (éditeur) The advance in space machineries has created a novel technology for observing and monitoring the Earth from space. Most earth observation remote sensing considerations focus on using conventional image processing algorithms or classic edge detection tools. Nevertheless, these techniques do not implement modern physics, applied mathematics, signal communication, remote sensing data, and innovative space technologies. This book provides readers with methods to comprehend how to monitor coastal environments, disaster areas, and infrastructure from space with advanced talent remote sensing technology to bridge the gaps between modern space technology, image processing algorithms, mathematical models and the critical issue of the coastal and infrastructure investigations. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture is an important state variable of the land surface ecosystem. In this paper, the water cloud model (WCM) and advanced integral equation model (AIEM) are coupled to retrieve soil moisture using time series Sentinel-1A data and moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR), are cross-combined to initialize the calibrated model. The calibration results show the following: (1) Vegetation parameters have a great influence on model calibration; and (2) The combination of (NDVI, LAI) is recommended to calibrate the coupled model, the RMSE, R2 is 0.739 dB, and 0.716 for the observed and estimated backscattering coefficients. The soil moisture inversion results show that: (1) the accuracy of model calibration and soil moisture inversion are inconsistent; and (2) The normalized vegetation parameters, such as NDVI, EVI and FPAR, are suitable for WCM to describe vegetation characteristics, and NDVI is the optimum. When V2 is the NDVI, the average bias, MAE, RMSE, ubRMSE and R2 are –0.007 m3/m3, 0.074 m3/m3, 0.087 m³/m³, 0.087 m3/m3 and 0.750, respectively. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (auteur) Determining stream networks automatically from digital elevation models is an issue that is actively being studied. The quality of elevation models has increased over time, but many hydrologically critical features, such as culverts, are often missing from the elevation data. To analyze the surficial water flow, one must either prepare a special elevation model or post-process an already-existing model. This study builds on the traditional, well-established method of determining the stream network from digital elevation models. We have extended the traditional method by locating culverts automatically, using road network data as an input. We show, by comparison to the reference data, that the culverts being most relevant for the stream network can be found with good accuracy. We demonstrate that by including the automatically located culverts in the automatic stream network determination, the quality of the generated network can be noticeably improved.
