[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) The drainage network of a sixth-order tropical river basin, viz. Ithikkara river basin, was extracted from different sources such as Survey of India topographic maps (1: 50,000; TOPO) and digital elevation data of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) (30 m) and Shuttle Radar Topography Mapping Mission (SRTM) (90 m). Basin morphometric attributes were estimated to evaluate the accuracy of the digital elevation model (DEM)-derived drainage networks for hydrologic applications as well as terrain characterization. The stream networks derived from ASTER and SRTM DEMs show significant agreement (with slight overestimation of lower order streams) with that of TOPO. The study suggests that SRTM (despite the coarser spatial resolution) provides better results, in drainage delineation and basin morphometry, compared to ASTER. Further, the variability of basin morphometry among the data sources might be attributed to spatial variation of elevation, raster grid size and vertical accuracy of the DEMs as well as incapability of the surface hydrologic analysis functions in the GIS platform. [Termes IGN] signal GPSRésumé : (auteur) The GNSS reflectometry technique provides geometric information on the environment surrounding the GNSS antenna including the vertical distance to a reflecting surface. We use sea-surface reflections of GPS signals, recorded as oscillations in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), to estimate the GNSS to tide gauge (TG) levelling tie, and thus the ellipsoidal heights of the TG. We develop approaches to isolate SNR data dominated by sea-surface reflections and to remove SNR frequency changes caused by the dynamic sea surface. Comparison with in situ levelling at eight sites reveals mean differences at the centimetre level for satellites above 12∘ elevation, with four sites showing differences of 3 cm or smaller. These differences include errors in the in situ levelling, in the antenna calibration model and in the TG measurements, and so represent an upper bound on our technique’s error. Data sampling (1 or 30 s) does not significantly affect the results. We detect systematic errors at the decimetre level related to satellite elevations below 12∘ and to sea-surface height and also differences between results from the L1 and L2 GPS signals larger than 15 cm at two sites. These systematic errors remain unexplained; differences between GPS signals are attributed to receiver-dependent differences in the SNR measurements, while the elevation-dependent error is attributed to unmodelled phase effects such as those caused by tropospheric refraction and sea-surface roughness. Using our approach, we identify a levelling offset of 1.5 cm related to a TG sensor change, illustrating our technique’s value for TG reference monitoring. [Termes IGN] réseau hydrographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The detailed topographic information contained in light detection and ranging (LiDAR) digital elevation models (DEMs) can present significant challenges for modelling surface drainage patterns. These data frequently represent anthropogenic infrastructure, such as road embankments and drainage ditches. While LiDAR DEMs can improve estimates of catchment boundaries and surface flow paths, modelling efforts are often confounded difficulties associated with incomplete representation of infrastructure. The inability of DEMs to represent embankment underpasses (e.g. bridges, culverts) and the problems with existing automated techniques for dealing with these problems can lead to unsatisfactory results. This is often dealt with by manually modifying LiDAR DEMs to incorporate the effects of embankment underpasses. This paper presents a new DEM pre-processing algorithm for removing the artefact dams created by infrastructure in sites of embankment underpasses as well as enforcing flow along drainage ditches. The application of the new algorithm to a large LiDAR DEM of a site in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, demonstrated that the least-cost breaching method used by the algorithm could reliably enforce drainage pathways while minimizing the impact to the original DEM.
