Overland cell runoff (area-weighted cell runoff), total runoff volume, clustering statistics, and hot spot patterns were examined for the different cell sizes and trends identified. Total runoff volumes decreased with increasing cell size. Using data sets of 210-m cell size or smaller in conjunction with a representative watershed boundary allows one to model the runoff volumes within 0.2 percent accuracy. The runoff clustering statistics decrease with increasing cell size; a cell size of 960 m or smaller is necessary to indicate significant high-runoff clustering. Runoff hot spot areas have a decreasing trend with increasing cell size; a cell size of 240 m or smaller is required to detect important hot spots. Conclusions regarding cell size effects on runoff estimation cannot be applied to local watershed areas due to the inconsistent changes of runoff volume with cell size; but, optimal cells sizes for clustering and hot spot analyses are applicable to local watershed areas due to the consistent trends. [Termes IGN] hydrodynamiqueRésumé : (auteur) The impact of afforestation/deforestation on groundwater recharge can be predicted by using one-dimensional soil-vegetation water flow models based on Richards' equation. However simulations depend upon parameters that are not easily measurable. Pollacco et al. (2008) showed that the hydraulic parameters can be determined, if the vegetation parameters are known, by fitting simulated time series of soil moisture profiles to those measured in situ. This paper presents a case study to determine if the interception and crop factor parameters can tentatively be calibrated by fitting soil moisture profiles. Synthetic data were used and the other vegetation parameters and the soil hydraulic parameters were assumed to be known. We applied and improved the Linking Test developed by Pollacco et al. (2008) to look for links between the parameters that need to be calibrated, and thus to investigate whether inverse modelling is feasible, which depends on the accuracy of the calibration data. $\bullet$ The Linking Test established that interception and evapotranspiration parameters are linked and, therefore, uncertainty on interception compensates for uncertainty on evapotranspiration. Thus in spite of a good match between observed and simulated soil moisture data, inverse modelling is unfeasible. This is true even if the interception or the crop factor parameters are known, because an error on interception or evapotranspiration will be compensated by an error on groundwater recharge without affecting soil moisture. This paper recommends that vegetation parameters should not be calibrated by optimisation against soil moisture data. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Ship detection in inhomogeneous regions using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is usually confronted with the severe heterogeneities of the oceans; this paper proposes a new detection scheme to overcome this problem. At first, an object-oriented segmentation algorithm is employed to partition the whole SAR image into several uniform regions. Then, for each partitioned region within water areas, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is applied to select the optimal background distribution model, and ship detection is carried out using the adaptive constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector based on the selected probability density function. Finally, the detection results of each region are merged. An experiment based on an ENVISAT ASAR image of the Yangtze estuary show that the proposed strategy can effectively deal with heterogeneous scenarios in inhomogenous regions and greatly improves the detection results. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) We present the follow-up of our previously published work, where we described a wavelet-based method to characterize the sea surface backscatter structures in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The method relies on the ability of the 2-D continuous wavelet technique to detect the spatial structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) and to isolate wind-related cells and features. The analysis of the cells' geometry, molded by the radiometric characteristics of the sea surface, permits the identification of the wind direction inside the cells, due to the along-wind asymmetry of backscatter structures, and thus the computation of the wind speed through standard algorithms. Twenty-one SAR images (ERS-2 and Envisat ASAR Wide Swath) over the Mediterranean Sea have been analyzed, and the results are compared with satellite wind fields. The images cover a range of meteorological conditions from low to moderate winds. Comparison of the SAR-derived wind fields with those provided by satellite scatterometers indicates a good score of success (roughly 70%-80%). The developed methodology, once tested over an adequate number of images to derive statistically reliable results, could be routinely used to enrich SAR images with the wind field as well as to characterize the MABL in terms of size, distribution, and shape of the backscatter cells.
