[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Co-registration of aerial imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data is quite challenging because the different imaging mechanisms produce significant geometric and radiometric distortions between the two multimodal data sources. To address this problem, we propose a robust and effective coarse-to-fine registration method that is conducted in two stages utilizing spatial constraints and Gabor structural features. In the first stage, the LiDAR point cloud data is transformed into an intensity map that is used as the reference image. Then, coarse registration is completed by designing a partition-based Features from Accelerated Segment Test (FAST) operator to extract the uniformly distributed interest points in the aerial images and thereafter performing a local geometric correction based on the collinearity equations using the exterior orientation parameters (EoPs). The coarse registration aims to provide a reliable spatial geometry relationship for the subsequent fine registration and is designed to eliminate rotation and scale changes, as well as making only a few translation differences exist between the images. In the second stage, a novel feature descriptor called multi-Scale and multi-Directional Features of odd Gabor (SDFG) is first built to capture the multi-scale and multi-directional structural properties of the images. Then, the three-dimensional (3D) phase correlation (PC) of the SDFG descriptor is established to detect the control points (CPs) between the aerial and LiDAR intensity image in the frequency domain, where the image matching is accelerated by the 3D Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique. Finally, the obtained CPs not only are employed to refine the EoPs, but also are used to achieve the fine registration of the aerial images and LiDAR data. We conduct experiments to verify the robustness of the proposed registration method using three sets of aerial images and LiDAR data with different scene coverage. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to geometric distortions and radiometric changes. Moreover, it achieves the registration accuracy of less than 2 pixels for all cases, which outperforms the current four state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its superior registration performance. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) Previous studies on tidal flood mapping are mostly through continental- and/or global-scale approaches. Moreover, the few works on local-scale perception are concentrated in Europe, Asia, and North America. Here, we present a case study approaching a tidal flood risk mapping application in the face of climate change scenarios in a region with a strong environmental and social appeal. The study site is an estuarine cut in the Brazilian semi-arid region, covering part of two state conservation units, which has been suffering severe consequences from tidal flooding in recent years. In this case study, we used high-geodetic-precision data (lidar DEM), together with robust tidal return period statistics and data from current sea level rise scenarios. We found that approximately 327.60 km2 of the estuary is under tidal flood risk and in need of mitigation measures. This case study can serve as a basis for future management actions, as well as a model for applying risk mapping in other coastal areas. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) The determination of a fully populated variance-covariance matrix (VCM) of a point cloud acquired with a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) is not straightforward as physical correlations between TLS observations are not sufficiently known. Ignoring correlations leads to biased estimates, wrong modeling of surfaces, or the misinterpretation of geometric changes. For this reason, this study aims at progressing the empirical determination of correlations in TLS range observations by investigating short-scale correlations (mm to cm) of TLS rangefinders. Therefore, two methods are proposed to determine spatial correlations between TLS range observations. Both methods are evaluated for simulated laser scans, and then applied to empirical data of four different terrestrial laser scanners. The results demonstrate that short-scale correlations exist, and it is possible to quantify the relevant parameters to fill the VCM. It also shows that the correlation differs between the scanners and with the distance. Furthermore, we analyze the change of the correlation length with changing scanning configurations such as distance, incidence angle, and reflectivity with the result that this must be considered while applying the aforementioned methods to point clouds of large objects. All in all, this study trustfully quantifies physical short-scale correlations yielding from the rangefinder and suggests a guideline to apply this to point clouds of large objects. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Urban regions are complicated functional systems that are closely associated with and reshaped by human activities. The propagation of online geographic information-sharing platforms and mobile devices equipped with the Global Positioning System (GPS) greatly proliferates proximate sensing images taken near or on the ground at a close distance to urban targets. Studies leveraging proximate sensing images have demonstrated great potential to address the need for local data in the urban land-use analysis. This paper reviews and summarizes the state-of-the-art methods and publicly available data sets from proximate sensing to support land-use analysis. We identify several research problems in the perspective of examples to support the training of models and means of integrating diverse data sets. Our discussions highlight the challenges, strategies, and opportunities faced by the existing methods using proximate sensing images in urban land-use studies. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Conservation strategies are hindered by a lack of accurate maps of important habitat for many wildlife species, but especially for species inhabiting managed forest landscapes. Prioritizing restoration efforts on Alaska’s Tongass National Forest from past extensive clearcut logging is extremely challenging given the difficulty in accurately mapping its remote, rugged temperate rainforest landscapes. We tested the application of airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology to build a winter habitat model for Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis), the primary herbivore in the coastal temperate rainforest. We analyzed the importance of geomorphometric and forest structure characteristics as predictors of deer winter habitat selection using Random Forest applied to a 3-year GPS relocation dataset collected from 40 adult female deer. The LiDAR-based habitat model had a predictive performance of 94% (Out-of-bag error = 6%), a 10% lower model error compared to air-photo interpreted polygons and modeled plot data. Random Forest also outperformed analogous resource selection function models based on a comprehensive k-fold cross-validation. Deer habitat selection patterns in the LiDAR-based model were nonlinear across geomorphometric and forest structure predictive variables, and generally supported existing studies of deer habitat selection. Besides improving deer conservation and management on the Tongass National Forest, our approach could greatly enhance the accuracy and resolution of habitat maps used for conservation and restoration planning across large managed forest landscapes.
