[Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (auteur) Roof-mounted spinning LiDAR sensors are widely used by autonomous vehicles. However, most semantic datasets and algorithms used for LiDAR sequence segmentation operate on 360∘ frames, causing an acquisition latency incompatible with real-time applications. To address this issue, we first introduce HelixNet, a 10 billion point dataset with fine-grained labels, timestamps, and sensor rotation information necessary to accurately assess the real-time readiness of segmentation algorithms. Second, we propose Helix4D, a compact and efficient spatio-temporal transformer architecture specifically designed for rotating LiDAR sequences. Helix4D operates on acquisition slices corresponding to a fraction of a full sensor rotation, significantly reducing the total latency. Helix4D reaches accuracy on par with the best segmentation algorithms on HelixNet and SemanticKITTI with a reduction of over 5× in terms of latency and 50× in model size. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) 3D change detection draws more and more attention in recent years due to the increasing availability of 3D data. It can be used in the fields of land use / land cover (LULC) change detection, 3D geographic information updating, terrain deformation analysis, urban construction monitoring et al. Our motivation to study 3D change detection is mainly related to the practical need to update the outdated point clouds captured by Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) with new point clouds obtained by dense image matching (DIM).
The thesis has three main parts. The first part, chapter 1, explains the motivation, providing a review of current ALS and airborne photogrammetry techniques. It also presents the research objectives and questions. The second part including chapter 2 and chapter 3 evaluates the quality of photogrammetric products and investigates their potential for change detection. The third part including chapter 4 and chapter 5 proposes two methods for change detection that meet different requirements.
To investigate the potential of using point clouds derived by dense matching for change detection, we propose a framework for evaluating the quality of 3D point clouds and DSMs generated by dense image matching. Our evaluation framework based on a large number of square patches reveals the distribution of dense matching errors in the whole photogrammetric block. Robust quality measures are proposed to indicate the DIM accuracy and precision quantitatively. The overall mean offset to the reference is 0.1 Ground Sample Distance (GSD); the maximum mean deviation reaches 1.0 GSD. We also find that the distribution of dense matching errors is homogenous in the whole block and close to a normal distribution based on many patch-based samples. However, in some locations, especially along narrow alleys, the mean deviations may get worse. In addition, the profiles of ALS points and DIM points reveal that the DIM profile fluctuates around the ALS profile. We find that the accuracy of DIM point cloud improves and that the noise level decreases on smooth ground areas when oblique images are used in dense matching together with nadir images.
Then we evaluate whether the standard LiDAR filters are effective to filter dense matching points in order to derive accurate DTMs. Filtering results on a city block show that LiDAR filters perform well on the grassland, along bushes and around individual trees if the point cloud is sufficiently precise. When a ranking filter is used on the point clouds before filtering, the filtering will identify fewer but more reliable ground points. However, some small objects on the terrain will be filtered out. Since we aim at obtaining accurate DTMs, the ranking filter shows its value in identifying reliable ground points. Based on the previous findings in DIM quality, we propose a method to detect building changes between ALS and photogrammetric data. Firstly, the ALS points and DIM points are split out and concatenated with the orthoimages. The multimodal data are normalized to feed into a pseudo-Siamese Neural network for change detection. Then, the changed objects are delineated through per-pixel classification and artefact removal. The change detection module based on a pseudo-Siamese CNN can quickly localize the changes and generate coarse change maps. The next module can be used in precise mapping of change boundaries. Experimental results show that the proposed pseudo-Siamese Neural network can cope with the DIM errors and output plausible change detection results. Although the point cloud quality from dense matching is not as fine as laser scanning points, the spectral and textural information provided by the orthoimages serve as a supplement.
Considering that the tasks of semantic segmentation and change detection are correlated, we propose SiamPointNet++ model to combine the two tasks in one framework. The method outputs a pointwise joint label for each ALS point. If an ALS point is unchanged, it is assigned a semantic label; If an ALS point is changed, it is assigned a change label. The sematic and change information are included in the joint labels with minimum information redundancy. The combined Siamese network learns both intra-epoch and inter-epoch features. Intra-epoch features are extracted at multiple scales to embed the local and global information. Inter-epoch features are extracted by Conjugated Ball Sampling (CBS) and concatenated to make change inference. Experiments on the Rotterdam data set indicate that the network is effective in learning multi-task features. It is invariant to the permutation and noise of inputs and robust to the data difference between ALS and DIM data. Compared with a sophisticated object-based method and supervised change detection, this method requires much less hyper-parameters and human intervention but achieves superior performance.
As a conclusion, the thesis evaluates the quality of dense matching points and investigates its potential of updating outdated ALS points. The two change detection methods developed for different applications show their potential in the automation of topographic change detection and point cloud updating. Future work may focus on improving the generalizability and interpretability of the proposed models.Numéro de notice : 20403 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE/INFORMATIQUE Nature : Thèse étrangère Note de thèse : PhD thesis : Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation : Enschede, university of Twente : 2022 DOI : 10.3990/1.9789036552653 Date de publication en ligne : 14/01/2022 En ligne : https://research.utwente.nl/en/publications/photogrammetric-point-clouds-quality [...] Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=100963

[Termes IGN] image satelliteRésumé : (auteur) The THEIA data and services centre (www.theia-land.fr) is a consortium of 12 French public institutions involved in Earth observation and environmental sciences (CEA, CEREMA, CIRAD, CNES, IGN, INRA, CNRS, IRD, Irstea, Météo France, AgroParisTech, and ONERA). THEIA was initiated in 2012 with the objective of increasing the use of space data by the scientific community and the public actors. The first years allowed structuring the national science and user communities, pooling resources to facilitate access to data and processing capacities, federating various previously unrelated initiatives, and disseminating the French achievements nationally and internationally.
The THEIA Land Data and Services Centre (www.theia-land.fr) is a consortium of 12 French public institutions involved in Earth observation and environmental sciences (CEA, CEREMA, CIRAD, CNES, IGN, INRAE, CNRS, IRD, Irstea, Météo France, AgroParisTech, and ONERA). THEIA has been initiated with the objective of increasing the use of space data by the scientific community and the public actors. The Scientific Expertise Centers (SEC) cluster research groups on various thematic domains. The "Urban” SEC gathers experts in multi-sensor urban remote sensing. Researchers of this group have structured their works around the development of algorithms useful for urban remote sensing using optical and SAR sensors to propose “urban products” at three different spatial scales: (1) the urban footprint, (2) the urban fabrics and (3) the urban objects. The objective of this poster is to present recent (>2019) advances of the URBAN SEC at these three scales. For the first two, the proposed methods are adapted to the geographic context of urban cities (West Cities, South Cities first and North Cities). For each spatial scale, the objective is to propose validated scientific products already available or in the near-term through the THEIA Land Service and Data Infrastructure.
At the macro-scale (urban footprint), an unsupervised automated approach is currently under development at Espace-DEV - Montpellier, and funded by a CNES project (TOSCA DELICIOSA). This method is derived from the FOTO algorithm originally developed to differentiate vegetation textures in HR and VHR satellite images (Couteron et al. 2006, Lang et al., 2019). It has been optimized and packaged into the FOTOTEX Python Open-Source library. The method is very well suited for areas with no or few urban settlement data or with quickly growing informal settlements. No training dataset is required, and the urban footprint can be identified from only one satellite image as long as it is not covered by clouds. For Western Cities where training datasets are available, the Urba-Opt processing chain based on an automatic and object-oriented approach has been deployed on HPC infrastructure and produce annually (since 2018) an urban settlement product which is available through the A2S dissemination infrastructure and on the Urban SEC of Theia land data and service Infrastructure. An ongoing research between LIVE and Espace Dev Labs focused on the interest to use the FOTOTEX result as training data in the Urba-Opt processing chain to propose an updated product of urban settlement for South cities.
At the scales of urban fabrics, products are under research activities The LIVE lab. In the context of an ongoing PhD thesis (ANR TIMES) and Tosca project (CNES 2019-2022) Sentinel-2 single-date images are used to assess two semantic segmentation networks (U-Net) that we combined using feature fusion between a from scratch network and a pre-trained network on ImageNet. Three spectral or textural indices have been added to the both networks in order to improve the classification results. The results showed a performance gain for the fusion methods. The research activities are ongoing in order to test the S1 imagery and temporal series for training in a deep architecture.
The IGN-LaSTIG - Univ. Paris Est has focused on the use of Sentinel-2 and VHR mono-temporal SPOT products to retrieve land cover information related to urban density. First, images undergo a U-net based semantic segmentation at urban object level to retrieve ‘topographic’ classes (buildings, roads, vegetation, …). Generalized information about urban fabrics is then derived out of these land cover maps thanks to another CNN architecture. Both a building density measure and a simplified Urban Atlas like land cover map are calculated. The UMR ESPACE has focused on the machine learning modeling of the evolution of urban territories of Arctic (Yakutsk) and North-Eastern Europe (Baltic States and Kaliningrad) cities since the post-Soviet period at two scales: those of the built-up area with high spatial resolution SPOT 6/7 images, and of the urban structures based on the use of Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 8 OLI, and Sentinel 2 MSI images. Environmental (urban vegetation), economic (agricultural transformation), and morphometric indexes have been developed to characterize the processes of urban restructuring (densification, renovation) and expansion of post-Soviet cities. A comparative analysis of the machine learning algorithms used was done on the South-East Baltic cities to evaluate their performance.
At the scale of urban object (3), a map of building with their functions is proposed by the TETIS laboratory. The study targets the retrieval of buildings footprint using deep convolutional neural networks for semantic segmentation, from Spot-6/7 images (1,5m spacing), on the entire France mainland. A single model has been trained and validated from 1.2k Spot-6/7 scenes and 20M images patches. The LIVE Lab has focused on the detection of urban changes from tri-stereoscopic Pléiades imagery through 2017 to 2020. A processing chain based on a Random Forest classifiers (ImCLASS) has been tested and the impact of the height attribute to detect changes has been evaluated to characterize changes into three thematic classes of changes.

Note de contenu :
