[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Cinema data is characteristically complex, heterogeneous and interlinked. Rather than relying on simple information retrieval techniques, researchers are increasingly turning to the creative exploration and reapplication of data in order to more fully explore the meaning of newly available and diverse data sets. In this context, the cinema historian becomes the creator of visual texts which can be assessed for both their interpretive insight and their aesthetic qualities. This paper presents four research projects that use different spatio-temporal visualization techniques to understand the industrial dynamics of post-war film exhibition and distribution in Australia. The research integrates work by a group of inter-disciplinary investigators into the effectiveness of techniques such as dendritic mapping, Circos circular visualizations, animation, cartogram mapping, and multivariate visualization for the study of cinema circuits and operations at a number of scales. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) There is much discussion in the U.S. about shrinking enrollments in geomatics and the impact of an insufficient workforce of trained professionals. A key reason for this problem is likely that many students are not aware of the possibility of the interesting dynamic careers in geomatics or other geospatial fields. Those that begin to learn about geomatics can be confused by the widespread, interdisciplinary options available within geomatics, and are perhaps unsure about where to obtain a degree and what career options are available. This paper will discuss the results of a questionnaire given to sophomore civil and construction engineering students on both their first and last days of a geospatial information and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) class; the intent of the questionnaire was to evaluate the effectiveness of the course in exciting students about pursuing additional geomatics education. The questionnaire analysis was not meant to be scientific, but was given solely to obtain a general feel of their interests, career focus, and overall technical skills relevant to geomatics. The questionnaire was used by the faculty to identify approaches to improve exposure to geomatics at the undergraduate level. Despite being enrolled in a GIS course, at the beginning of the course many were unaware of what GIS was and few could provide a descriptive definition of geomatics. At the conclusion of the course, students showed a measureable increase in interest in geomatics. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The morphometric analysis of river basin helps to explore the interrelationship between hydraulic parameters and geomorphologic characteristics. The study has been conducted in the Upper Tons basin of Northern Foreland of Peninsular India. The river basin has been characterized using the topographical maps, CARTOSAT satellite image integrated using the GIS techniques. The drainage density analysis indicates lower values in the north-eastern regions and thus these regions can be categorized as better ground water potential zone. There are in total 10 sub-watersheds which have been delineated; SW-4 has maximum drainage density (4.75), stream frequency (5.61) and drainage texture (26.64) followed by SW-6–10. The prioritized sub-watershed numbers SW-4 and SW-6–10 need conservation practices because of their high erodibility and run-off. SW-1–3 and SW-5 regions have better permeable bed rocks and hence good for water harvesting. The areal parameter indicates elongated shape of basin and moderate to steeper ground slope. The results are supported by extensive field survey. This study can be applied for soil and water management, as well as disaster prevention from similar type of drainage basins.
