[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article seeks to address the gap between the quantitative, summative data that are typically engaged in geovisual analytics and the more personal, experiential ways of knowledge construction accentuated by qualitative GIS. By incorporating diverse forms of data within a high-dimensional conceptual framework, we set out a type of qualitative geovisual analytics. This approach is attentive to the epistemological limitations of singular data sources and highlights the multiple ways of exploring neighbourhoods. The article reports on a project that used an online survey, including collection of personal impressions of San Diego neighbourhoods based on street-level video. Three attribute spaces are conceptualized: survey respondents' characteristics, attributes of San Diego neighbourhoods, and characteristics of the words used to describe these neighbourhoods. The self-organizing map (SOM) technique was used to reduce the dimensionality of these attribute spaces for visual exploration. This approach makes several important contributions, including a demonstration of “scaling up” the work that has been done in qualitative GIS. It productively integrates experiential data with a geovisual analytics approach and reaffirms the multiple meanings of visualization. [Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) The purpose of this work is to determine whether spatial modeling can be used to model the spread of the Black Death. The study is limited to models for the propagation of the disease in Sweden in 1350. Geographic data of Swedish water bodies and medieval road networks, historical data on the population in Swedish parishes, including their medieval boundaries, along with historical notes and disease characteristics, were used to build alternative models for spatial distribution. Three different models are presented: one radial, one cost-based and one combining network analysis and radial propagation. Simulations were made to depict different scenarios on the spread of the disease, as well as the drastic changes in the overall population of Sweden, over a couple of hundred years. For purpose of validation the population decrease estimated in each parish is compared with independent historical documents. Results from model scenarios are visualized in maps of propagation, animated video sequences and a web map service. Our analyses clearly demonstrate the power of spatial analysis and geographic information systems to describe, model and visualize epidemiologic processes in space and time. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Object-oriented (OO) image analysis provides an efficient way to generate vector-format land-cover and land-use maps from remotely sensed images. Such image-derived vector maps, however, are generally presented with congested and twisted polygons with step-like boundaries. They include unclassified polygons and polygons with geometric conflicts such as unreadable small areas and narrow corridors. The complex and poorly readable representations usually make such maps not comply well with the Gestalt principle of cartography. This article describes a framework designed to improve the representation by resolving these problematic polygons. It presents a polygon similarity model integrating semantic, geometric and spectral characteristics of the image-derived polygons to eliminate small and unclassified polygons. In addition, an outward-inward-buffering approach is presented to resolve the narrow-corridor conflicts of a polygon and improve its overall appearance. A case study demonstrates that the implementation of the framework reduces the number of the polygons by 32% and the length of the polygon boundaries by 20%. At the same time, it does not cause distinct changes the distribution of land-use types (less than 0.05%) and the overall accuracy (decreased only 0.02%) as compared with the original image-derived land-use maps. We conclude that the presented framework and models effectively improve the overall representation of image-derived maps without distinct changes in their semantic characteristics and accuracy.
