[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Back to the 80s and 90s, researchers at the COGIT laboratory of the French National Mapping Agency often developed their own vector platforms dedicated to their respective research purposes like generalization, integration or 3D. This multiplicity of platforms became an obstacle to many important research activities like capitalizing and sharing. In 2000, based on ISO/OGC standard for data exchange, the COGIT laboratory decided to invest in the development of an ad hoc interoperable GIS platform that would host most of its research developments. This platform, called GeOxygene, was designed to have a rich data model and a genuine programming language to manipulate data. It facilitates the design and prototyping of processes which geographical data model are object oriented. It is also intended to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and programming efforts with other research labs. It is also shared through regular open source releases. This paper highlights the relevance for a research team like COGIT to contribute to Open Source software. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Editeur) This volume comprises the proceedings of the 2010 International Symposium of the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography. The nineteen papers reflect the research interests of the Commission which span the period from the Enlightenment to the evolution of Geographical Information Science. Apart from studies on general cartography, the volume, which reflects some co-operation with the ICA Commission on Maps and Society and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), contains regional studies on cartographic endeavours in Northern America, Brazil, and Southern Africa. The ICA Commission on Maps and Society participated as its field of study often overlaps with that of the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography. The USGS which is the official USA mapping organisation, was invited to emphasise that the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography is not only interested in historical maps, but also has as mandate the research and document the history of Geographical Information Science. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (éditeur) At a time when people use more and more geographic information and tools, the management of geographical information in software systems still holds many challenges and motivates researchers from different backgrounds to propose innovative solutions.
Representing geographical space beyond our mere perception is key to making relevant decisions, whether it is with respect to sustainable development or to the planning of everyday activities. Designing, sharing and exploiting such representations entails many challenges.
This book presents recent software design projects, led in teams, which sometimes have different backgrounds, to address these challenges. It analyzes the specificities of these projects in terms of motivation, data models and analysis methods. Proposals are also put forward to improve resource sharing in this domain.Note de contenu : 1. Introduction

Note de contenu : Introduction
