[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar-based 3D tree reconstruction enables the retrieval of detailed tree structure; however, many existing methods are based on high-density discrete return lidar datasets. In this paper, we propose the use of small footprint waveform lidar data to achieve branch-level tree reconstruction for both leaf-off and leaf-on conditions. The DIRSIG simulation environment was used for algorithm validation purposes. Leaf-off data served as reference, and leaf-on reconstruction for a particular tree resulted in an average branch length difference of 0.07 m and an average angular difference of approximately 6 degrees for both tilt and azimuth angles. Compared to in situ methods this approach may be used by an airborne system for accurate estimation of forest biomass, forest inventory, land degradation, etc. in large scale applications. Furthermore, since this approach can also be applied on leaf-on trees, the tree skeleton characterization eventually can be conducted year round and will be less dependent on seasonal changes. [Termes IGN] incendie de forêtRésumé : (Auteur) Post-wildfire management practices can greatly influence vegetation condition and dynamics, and are crucial in Mediterranean erosion-prone poor soil sites. Acquiring accurate ground inventory data is time-consuming, expensive and limited to small areas; but lidar data can be used to assess the impact of fires, and also to determine the convenient silvicultural measurements which should be carried out for site restoration. The aim of this paper was to assess the post-fire regeneration status of the vegetation in Sant Llorenç del Munt massif after a wildfire in summer 2003 by modeling the relationship between lidar height bins and canopy height model (CHM) with field data. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) prediction models provided estimations of vegetation fraction cover, average height (HM) over 1.30 m and number of stems over 1.30 m, with Pearson r values between 0.18 and 0.83. Classification models built with the same variables allowed separating two ground-based regeneration classes (good and scarce regeneration) with an approximate accuracy of 83 to 76 percent (model building and validation data, respectively). [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The use of helicopters as a sensor platform offers flexible fields of application due to adaptable flying speed at low flight levels. Modern helicopters are equipped with radar altimeters, inertial navigation systems (INS), forward-looking cameras and even laser scanners for automatic obstacle avoidance. If the 3D geometry of the terrain is already available, the analysis of airborne laser scanner (ALS) measurements may also be used for terrain-referenced navigation and change detection. In this paper, we present a framework for on-the-fly comparison of current ALS data to given reference data of an urban area. In contrast to classical difference methods, our approach extends the concept of occupancy grids known from robot mapping. However, it does not blur the measured information onto the grid cells. The proposed change detection method applies the Dempster–Shafer theory to identify conflicting evidence along the laser pulse propagation path. Additional attributes are considered to decide whether detected changes are of man-made origin or occurring due to seasonal effects. The concept of online change detection has been successfully validated in offline experiments with recorded ALS data streams. Results are shown for an urban test site at which multi-view ALS data were acquired at an interval of 1 year. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) The recent development of operational small unmanned aerial systems (UASs) opens the door for their extensive use in forest mapping, as both the spatial and temporal resolution of UAS imagery better suit local-scale investigation than traditional remote sensing tools. This article focuses on the use of combined photogrammetry and “Structure from Motion” approaches in order to model the forest canopy surface from low-altitude aerial images. An original workflow, using the open source and free photogrammetric toolbox, MICMAC (acronym for Multi Image Matches for Auto Correlation Methods), was set up to create a digital canopy surface model of deciduous stands. In combination with a co-registered light detection and ranging (LiDAR) digital terrain model, the elevation of vegetation was determined, and the resulting hybrid photo/LiDAR canopy height model was compared to data from a LiDAR canopy height model and from forest inventory data. Linear regressions predicting dominant height and individual height from plot metrics and crown metrics showed that the photogrammetric canopy height model was of good quality for deciduous stands. Although photogrammetric reconstruction significantly smooths the canopy surface, the use of this workflow has the potential to take full advantage of the flexible revisit period of drones in order to refresh the LiDAR canopy height model and to collect dense multitemporal canopy height series. [Termes IGN] UMLRésumé : (Auteur) Recently a national 3D standard was established in the Netherlands as a CityGML Application Domain Extension (called IMGeo). In line with the Dutch practice of modeling geo-information, the ADE is developed using a model driven approach. The classes are designed in UML and automatically mapped to GML schema. The current OGC CityGML specification does not provide rules or guidance on correctly modeling an ADE in UML. This article fills this gap by studying how CityGML can be extended for specific applications starting from the UML diagrams. Six alternatives for modeling ADEs in UML are introduced and compared. The optimal alternative is selected and applied to obtain the national 3D standard. The approach was extensively discussed with international experts, who were members of both SIG3D and other working groups. As a consequence the approach was adopted by the SIG3D, the Special Interest Group 3D which, among other things, work on the 3D standard CityGML in cooperation with OGC. Therefore the approach contains many issues that can be generalized and reused by future domain extensions of CityGML. To further support this, the article formulates a model-driven framework to model CityGML ADEs. Open issues are described in the conclusions.
