[Termes IGN] SuèdeRésumé : (auteur) Obtaining low vegetation data is important in order to quantify the structural characteristics of a forest. Dense three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning data can provide information on the vertical profile of a forest. However, most studies have focused on the dominant and subdominant layers of the forest, while few studies have tried to delineate the low vegetation. To address this issue, we propose a framework for individual tree crown (ITC) segmentation from laser data that focuses on both overstory and understory trees. The framework includes 1) a new algorithm (SSD) for 3D ITC segmentation of dominant trees, by detecting the symmetrical structure of the trees, and 2) removing points of dominant trees and mean shift clustering of the low vegetation. The framework was tested on a boreal forest in Sweden and the performance was compared 1) between plots with different stem density levels, vertical complexities, and tree species composition, and 2) using airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data, and merged ALS and TLS data (ALS + TLS data). The proposed framework achieved detection rates of 0.87 (ALS + TLS), 0.86 (TLS), and 0.76 (ALS) when validated with field-inventory data (of trees with a diameter at breast height ≥ 4 cm). When validating the estimated number of understory trees by visual interpretation, the framework achieved 19%, 21%, and 39% root-mean-square error values with ALS + TLS, TLS, and ALS data, respectively. These results show that the SSD algorithm can successfully separate laser points of overstory and understory trees, ensuring the detection and segmentation of low vegetation in forest. The proposed framework can be used with both ALS and TLS data, and achieve ITC segmentation for forests with various structural attributes. The results also illustrate the potential of using ALS data to delineate low vegetation. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) The accurate estimation of tree attributes is essential for sustainable forest management. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is a viable remote sensing technology suitable for estimating under canopy structure. However, TLS measurements generally underestimate tree height in taller trees, which leads to the underestimation of other tree attributes (e.g., stem volume). The integration of information derived from TLS and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry could potentially improve tree height estimation. This study investigated the applicability of integrating TLS and UAV photogrammetry to estimate individual tree attributes in managed coniferous forests of Japan. Diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height, and stem volume were estimated by (1) TLS data only, (2) integrating TLS and UAV data with TLS tree locations, and (3) integrating TLS and UAV data with treetop detections of the tree canopy. The TLS data only approach achieved high accuracy for DBH estimations with a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 2.36 cm (RMSE% 5.6%); however, tree height was greatly underestimated, with an RMSE of 8.87 m (28.9%) and a bias of −8.39 m. Integrating TLS and UAV photogrammetric data improved tree height estimation accuracy for both the TLS tree location (RMSE of 1.89 m and a bias of −0.46 m) and the treetop detection (RMSE of 1.77 m and a bias of 0.36 m) approaches. Integrating TLS and UAV photogrammetric data also improved the accuracy of the stem volume estimations with RMSEs of 0.21 m3 (10.8%) and 0.21 m3 (10.5%) for the TLS tree location and treetop detection approaches, respectively. Although the tree height of suppressed trees tended to be overestimated by TLS and UAV photogrammetric data integration, a good performance was obtained for dominant trees. The results of this study indicate that the integration of TLS and UAV photogrammetry is beneficial for the accurate estimation of tree attributes in coniferous forests. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) In recent years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have proven to be efficient analysis tools for processing point clouds, e.g., for reconstruction, segmentation, and classification. In this article, we focus on the classification of edges in point clouds, where both edges and their surrounding are described. We propose a new parameterization adding to each point a set of differential information on its surrounding shape reconstructed at different scales. These parameters, stored in a Scale-Space Matrix (SSM), provide a well-suited information from which an adequate neural network can learn the description of edges and use it to efficiently detect them in acquired point clouds. After successfully applying a multi-scale CNN on SSMs for the efficient classification of edges and their neighborhood, we propose a new lightweight neural network architecture outperforming the CNN in learning time, processing time, and classification capabilities. Our architecture is compact, requires small learning sets, is very fast to train, and classifies millions of points in seconds. Two test sites (with areas of 14,750 km2 and 12,630 km2) were used with a total of 1053 forest stands from southwestern Estonia and 951 forest stands from southeastern Estonia. The thinnings were predicted based on the ALS measurements in 2019 and 2017. The two most important ALS metrics for predicting the need for thinning were the 95th height percentile and the canopy cover. The prediction accuracy based on validation stands was 93.5% for southwestern Estonia and 85.7% for southeastern Estonia. For comparison, the general linear model prediction accuracy was less for both test sites—92.1% for southwest and 81.8% for southeast. The selected important predictive ALS metrics differed from those used in the RF algorithm. The cross-validation of the thinning necessity models of southeastern and southwestern Estonia showed a dependence on geographic regions. [Termes IGN] système de numérisation mobileRésumé : (auteur) Street trees are important components of an urban green space and understanding and measuring their ecological and cultural services is crucial for assessing the quality of streets and managing urban environments. Currently, most studies mainly focus on evaluating the ecological services of street trees by measuring the amount of greenness, but how to evaluate their aesthetic functions through quantitative measurements of street trees remain unclear. To address this problem, we propose a method to assess the aesthetic functions of street trees by quantifying the shape of greenness inspired by assessments of skyline aesthetics. Using a state-of-the-art mobile mapping system, we collected downtown-wide lidar data and panoramic images in Jinzhou City, Hebei Province, China. We developed a method for extracting the canopy line from the mobile lidar data, and then identified two basic elements, peaks and gaps, from street canopy lines and extracted six indexes (i.e., richness of peaks, evenness of peaks, frequency of peaks, total length of gaps, evenness of gaps and frequency of gaps) to describe the fluctuations and continuities of street canopy lines. We analyzed the abundance and spatial distribution of these indexes together with survey responses on the streets’ aesthetics and found that most of them were significantly correlated with human perception of streets. Compared to indexes of amount of greenness (e.g., green volume and green view index), these shape indexes have stronger influences on the physical aesthetic beauty of street trees. These findings suggest that a comprehensive assessment of the aesthetic function of street trees should consider both shape and amount of greenness. This study provides a new perspective for the assessment of urban green spaces and can assist future urban greening planning and urban landscape management.
