[Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The 26 December 2004 magnitude 9 earthquake off Sumatra provided the first examples of travelling tsunami waves in mid-ocean clearly detected by satellite altimetry. The earthquake was the largest since satellite altimetry started in the 1970s and gave peak-to-trough wave heights in mid-ocean of over a metre. The tsunami was detected by three of the four altimeters presently giving sea surface height information. Each detected the spreading front twice, as it moved south-westwards into the Indian Ocean and as it moved northwards into the Bay of Bengal. They also detected the disturbed region closer to the epicentre that expands with the slower velocities of higher-frequency waves. Although the plate rupture is estimated to extend over about 1300 km in a north/south direction, the satellite observations appear consistent with a smaller generation area towards the south of this rupture zone. Fronts observed in the Indian Ocean show a positive first crest. Those observed in the Bay of Bengal are of smaller amplitude and appear to show a first negative first crest (trough). The structure in the Indian Ocean front observed by Jason-1 suggests the possible presence of a shorter-wavelength negative component superimposed on the positive crest. [Termes IGN] montée du niveau de la merRésumé : (auteur) The problem of correcting the tide gauge records for the vertical land motion upon which the gauges are settled has only been partially solved. At best, the analyses so far have included model corrections for one of the many processes that can affect the land stability, namely the Glacial-Isostatic Adjustment (GIA). An alternative approach is to measure (rather than to model) the rates of vertical land motion at the tide gauges by means of space geodesy. A dedicated GPS processing strategy is implemented to correct the tide gauges records, and thus to obtain a GPS-corrected set of ‘absolute’ or geocentric sea-level trends. The results show a reduced dispersion of the estimated sea-level trends after application of the GPS corrections. They reveal that the reference frame implementation is now achieved within the millimetre accuracy on a weekly basis. Regardless of the application, whether local or global, we have shown that GPS data analysis has reached the maturity to provide useful information to separate land motion from oceanic processes recorded by the tide gauges or to correct these latter. For comparison purposes, we computed the global average of sea-level change according to Douglas [Douglas, B.C., 2001. Sea level change in the era of the recording tide gauge. Int. Geophys. Ser., 75, pp. 37–64.] rules, whose estimate is 1.84 ± 0.35 mm/yr after correction for the GIA effect [Peltier, W.R., 2001. Global glacial isostatic adjustment and modern instrumental records of relative sea level history. Int. Geophys. Ser., 75, pp. 65–95.]. We obtain a value of 1.31 ± 0.30 mm/yr, a value which appears to resolve the ‘sea level enigma’ [Munk, W., 2002. Twentieth century sea level: an enigma. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 99(10), pp. 6550–6555]. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) National and regional obligations to control and maintain water quality have led to an increase in coastal and estuarine monitoring. A potentially valuable tool is high temporal and spatial resolution satellite ocean colour data. NASA's MODIS-Terra and -Aqua can capture data at both 250 m and 500 m spatial resolutions and the existence of two sensors provides the possibility for multiple daily passes over a scene. However, no robust atmospheric correction method currently exists for these data, rendering them unusable for quantitative monitoring applications. Therefore, this paper presents an automatic and dynamic atmospheric correction approach allowing the determination of ocean colour. The algorithm is based around the standard MODIS 1 km atmospheric correction, includes cloud masking and is applicable to all of the visible 500 m bands. Comparison of the 500 m ocean colour data with the standard 1 km data shows good agreement and these results are further supported by in situ data comparisons. In addition, a novel method to produce 500 m chlorophyll-a estimates is presented. Comparisons of the 500 m estimates with the standard MODIS OC3M algorithm and to in situ data from a near-coast validation site are given. [Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat series of satellite altimeters provide the only extensive datasets that could conceivably be usedto constrain ocean tide models in high latitudes. Their sun-synchronous sampling, however, severely limits theobservations of solar tides, especially the principal semidiurnal S2 constituent. The Munk–Cartwright response method is anatural choice when attempting to analyze sun-synchronous data. The present study examines various ways a response analysis might be implemented to extract tides from ERS data. Admittances expressed as simple linear or constant functions of frequency cansometimes improve estimates over standard parameterizations, especially if done in conjunction with a reasonably accurate priorsolution. Some form of regularization, such as ridge regression, is also shown to improve the estimates. The approach provesbeneficial in a test for the southern Indian Ocean tides. It offers some promise for regions otherwise void of usefulobservations.
