With reference to the experimental investigations described in the thesis, some applications shall be mentioned, where airborne laser profiling can be the method of first choice.
The thesis is subdivided into four main parts and a final summary. Part 1 introduces the principles of airborne laser profiling and place the method in relation to the conventional photogrammetric and tacheometric approach for topographic terrain survey.
Part Il is dedicated to the hardware components of the airborne laser profiling system and to the conception of the data evaluation for determining the coordinates of the laser points. At first, the problem of airborne laser range finding and airborne sensor orientation is analyzed. The presented solution demonstrates that a laser profiling system can be realized with already existing hardware components. Part Il also describes the computation of the coordinates of the laser points. Finally a method for the calibration of die complete system is presented.
Part III deals with the modeling of the laser profiles, in order to derive a digital elevation model. There are two tasks: the first is to separate the topographically utilizable laser points on die ground from die laser points referring to topographically not-relevant objects like buildings or vegetation. The second task is the derivation of terrain profiles with equidistant ground points. Two mathematical theories are applied to cope with this tasks: mathematical morphology and stochastic processes. The theory of stochastic processes is adapted to die requirements of modeling terrain profiles. Thus, observed non-stationary time series can be analyzed and processed even by robust estimation technique.
Part IV presents empirical investigations from 5 airborne laser profiling projects carried out between 1988 and 1990. The main results are summarized here in a few words. The laser beam was successfully reflected from various kinds of ground materials and ground covers. There are practically no restrictions for topographic terrain survey by airborne laser profiling. The penetration of the laser onto the ground of forest areas under summer conditions was between 16% and 39% dependent on the type of the trees. The accuracy of die terrain heights was estimated to h=0.15m in the project Harz 1989. This high accuracy was verified by a large number of photogrammetric and tacheometric measurements.
