Classification accuracy was assessed at different spatial resolutions using common red and near infrared (nir) bands in the above four sensors data as well as simulated intermediate resolution data. It was observed that accuracy improved with better spatial resolution and there was a considerable increases in accuracy from 188 to 144 in resolution and from 72 in up to 23 m resolution with the modest increase in the intermediate range. Inclusion of the MIR band, and choice of proper acquisition date resulted in significantly higher crop classification accuracies. The results have been evaluated against the future sensor planned on IRS Platform. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This study examined the complementarity of radar and optical data for feature identification. Spaceborne radar and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM ) multispectral data sets were assessed independently and in combination to classify a site near Wad Medani, Sudan. Radar processing procedures included speckle reduction, texture extraction and postprocessing smoothing. Relative accuracy of the resultant classifications was established by comparison to ground truth information derived from field visitation. Neither speckle filtering nor postclassification smoothing were improvements over the poor results obtained with the unfiltered, original radar data. Texture measures were significant improvements over the original data (20 percent overall accuracy increase) and several, but not all, individual classes had excellent results. Landsat TM had good overall results (80 percent correct) but considerable spectral confusion between urban and bare soil. Combination of radar with Landsat TM greatly improved results, achieving near perfect classification of all individual classes. The systematic strategy of this study, determination of the best individual method before introducing the next procedure, itas effective in managing a complex set of analysis possibilities. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Many studies have used remote sensing to detect forest conversion activities in the Amazon for the purposes of directing policy or generating data for environmental modeling. However, this technology has yet to be applied towards forest law enforcement in the region. In this study we design a violation detection system for Areas of Permanent Preservation using Landsat TM data and GIS, and test it in a logging town in the Eastern Amazon. Our detection methodology generates a simple forest cover map using unsupervised classification techniques, as well as river maps derived directly from remotely sensed data. Data produced through this detection system include a forest cover map, waterway map, map of Areas of Permanent Preservation, and violation map. We include a discussion of the advantages and limitations of each of these data products for law enforcement purposes in the region. Violations were detected in 60% of all Areas of Permanent Preservation in pastures and other cleared properties, showing extremely low law abidance once deforestation occurs. Overall, violation detection resulted in accuracy levels of 88.6%, illustrating the viability of efficiently monitoring land cover for law enforcement purposes in the Amazon. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Conventional color (CC) and colorinfrared (CIR) photography have been used in a widerange of remote sensing applications. Many users, however, do not fully understand or know how to interpret it. Published plant photography / reflectance studies make little effort to help the layreader understand the relationship of plant spectral reflectance with their color tonal response on color photographic film. The objective of this paper is to describe the relationship of how spectral reflectances of plant species are registered on photographic film and how the resultant color tonal responses of the plants are produced in relation to their spectral reflectance. Illustrations are presented which simplify the interpretation of the interaction between plant canopy reflectance and CC/CIR photographic film emulsion layers, including the resultant color tones of the plants. Research studies addressing both plant photography and reflectance data can be more meaningful and better appreciated if one has a general understanding of these relationships.
