[Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The ENVISAT mission with a suite of high performance sensors offers some opportunities for mapping snow cover at regional and catchment scales. The spatial resolution of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MERIS) data and the spectral characteristics of the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) data are suitable for these purposes. A new approach has been developed for the generation of snow cover products in Alpine regions, based on the combined use of ENVISAT optical data and topographic information. The Alpine region is selected as a test area to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of the novel approach. In particular, attention is focused on three regions of northern Italy (Valle d'Aosta, Piemonte, Lombardia). The first results obtained by the application of this new method to Earth Observation data will be presented and analysed. [Termes IGN] service fondé sur la positionRésumé : (Editeur) Installed GPS navigation systems are becoming popular options for new car buyers. And many aftermarket, portable, and PDA- or cell phone-based systems are available in the marketplace. A basic GPS navigation system can provide continuous, accurate navigation, except when the GPS signals are blocked by buildings, tunnels, or other obstructions or when multipath or interference reduces position accuracy. A factory-installed system might include additional sensors such as an odometer or gyroscope to provide dead-reckoning navigation when GPS signals are lacking. Another aid to accurate navigation is map-matching in which the computed position fix is snapped onto the nearest road. However, depending on the fix error and the density of the road network, the system may or may not snap the fix onto the correct road. In this month's column, guest authors Syed and Cannon examine a novel technique that tightly integrates information from accurate maps with raw GPS and gyro data to determine a vehicle's position. Using classic statistical theory and fuzzy logic algorithms, the technique improved vehicle navigation accuracy in an urban canyon setting by more than 30 percent. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) A new method (the 'sink' method) is proposed for the mapping of productive mesoscale oceanic thermal fronts based on the combined analysis of satellite imagery for sea surface temperature (SST) distribution and chlorophyll (CHL) concentration under a Geographic Information System (GIS). In an SST lattice data array, data value sinks describe heterogeneous drops in SST distribution as this is compared to more homogeneously distributed SST in the surrounding area. Using Arc/Info GIS, these thermal discontinuities are flagged and applied on SST and CHL imagery for the calculation of differences in SST and CHL patterns (DSST and DCHL) inside and outside of these flagged areas. Spatially connected sinks that are characterized by simultaneous negative DSST and positive DCHL pattern are mapped as thermal fronts. Results include a time series of monthly front occurrence GIS maps in Eastern Mediterranean waters along with three calculated front characteristics (DSST, DCHL and bathymetry). Comparisons between the mapped fronts and isobath distributions present clearly visible front-to-isobath spatial and shape associations while spatial analysis between front and wind data explains 66% of the number of mapped fronts. [Termes IGN] rapport signal sur bruitRésumé : (Auteur) The Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite acquired a sequence of data in 2001 and 2002 that highlighted the annual flooding of the lower Okavango Delta. The data were collected as part of the calibration/validation programme for the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) sensor on the NASA EO-1 satellite. The primary purpose of this study was to compare the capability of ALI to that of Landsat ETM + for large-scale mapping applications in the Okavango Delta. While the extent and inaccessibility of many areas of the Delta make application of remote sensing attractive, the availability of data with adequate spatial and spectral resolution has limited the characterization of the complex patterns of land cover and geomorphology in the Delta. Initial analysis of the ALI data via supervised classification clearly showed macro-flood features, delineation of downstream channel flow areas, and lateral-downstream inundation of the floodplain. These patterns and the proportions of flooding of the channel compared to that of the floodplain (impoundment) varied annually, from the wetter seasonal swamps through the drier seasonal and occasional swamps. Consistently higher classification accuracies achieved using ALI data relative to ETM + data are attributed to the higher signal-to-noise ratio and the increased dynamic range of the ALI data. [Termes IGN] personne malvoyanteRésumé : (Auteur) Communicating spatial information to the blind and visually impaired using maps and graphics presents many difficulties. Past research has offered advice to cartographers on topics such as tactile areal, point, and line symbolization; on perceptual problems related to dense linear features on tactile maps; and on the relationship between categorical data, measurement theory, and tactile discrimination. With this previous work as a foundation, we describe our research efforts with haptic and auditory maps-the Haptic Soundscapes Project. Haptic Soundscapes maps allow blind and visually-impaired individuals to feel map features through force feedback devices and hear auditory cues that add both redundant and complementary information. Recent experimental work by the authors has led to several recommended practices for cartographic data simplification, object size discrimination, shape identification, and general interface navigation. The authors also present haptic and auditory mapping examples to illustrate design ideas, algorithms, and technical requirements. Future prospects for automated haptic and auditory map creation are discussed and presented in the context of the past work in generating maps for the blind and visually impaired from cartographic data.
