[Termes IGN] itérationRésumé : (Auteur) Superresolution mapping (SRM) is a method to produce a fine-spatial-resolution land cover map from coarse-spatial-resolution remotely sensed imagery. A popular approach for SRM is a two-step algorithm, which first increases the spatial resolution of coarse fraction images by interpolation and then determines class labels of fine-resolution pixels using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) principle. By constructing a new image formation process that establishes the relationship between the observed coarse-resolution fraction images and the latent fine-resolution land cover map, it is found that the MAP principle only matches with area-to-point interpolation algorithms and should be replaced by deconvolution if an area-to-area interpolation algorithm is to be applied. A novel iterative interpolation deconvolution (IID) SRM algorithm is proposed. The IID algorithm first interpolates coarse-resolution fraction images with an area-to-area interpolation algorithm and produces an initial fine-resolution land cover map by deconvolution. The fine-spatial-resolution land cover map is then updated by reconvolution, back-projection, and deconvolution iteratively until the final result is produced. The IID algorithm was evaluated with simulated shapes, simulated multispectral images, and degraded Landsat images, including comparison against three widely used SRM algorithms: pixel swapping, bilinear interpolation, and Hopfield neural network. Results show that the IID algorithm can reduce the impact of fraction errors and can preserve the patch continuity and the patch boundary smoothness simultaneously. Moreover, the IID algorithm produced fine-resolution land cover maps with higher accuracies than those produced by other SRM algorithms. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Les aires protégées de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC) sont menacées par diverses pressions anthropiques nécessitant un suivi fréquent et précis. Le mini-drone Falcon équipé d’un appareil photo numérique Sony NEX-7 a été utilisé pour cartographier et suivre la dynamique d’un terroir villageois dans le Domaine de chasse de Mondo Missa à l’est du Parc national de la Garamba, au nord-est de la RDC. Un total de 3 143 photos acquises en avril et juillet 2015, avec une résolution au sol de 8 cm/pixel, a été orthorectifié. La cartographie a porté sur une zone de 114 ha. Les orthoimages ont d’abord été segmentées, les segments étant ensuite classés manuellement par photo-interprétation. Des changements notables ont été constatés entre les deux dates. Les zones des forêts et savanes ont perdu 6,5 ha (86,6 à 80,1 ha). Les jachères sont passées de 16,9 à 8,2 ha, les défriches de 4,1 à 10,0 ha. Les cultures saisonnières ont connu une variation allant de 3,2 à 11,8 ha. La taille moyenne des parcelles cultivées est de 0,2 ha (s = 0,14 ha ; n = 50). Enfin, la surface occupée par les arbres isolés a peu évolué (de 1,3 à 1,9 ha), celle des implantations humaines étant constante (1,7 ha). Ces résultats traduisent le fait que l’expansion de l’agriculture itinérante sur brûlis induit une conversion des habitats naturels et une modification de la composition végétale. Les aéronefs sans pilote à bord permettent de réaliser une cartographie précise et une surveillance rapide des changements d’affectation des terres à petite échelle dans les aires protégées des forêts et savanes tropicales. Ils offrent donc une solution efficace pour évaluer la déforestation et la dégradation au sein des espaces occupés par les communautés locales. Cette évaluation représente un enjeu important dans le processus REDD+ qui envisage de quantifier avec précision ces évolutions. En 2013, une prospection par LiDAR aéroporté de la forêt domaniale de Verdun a mis en évidence sous forme d’images 3-D à haute résolution les vestiges de guerre masqués par le manteau forestier. Cette étude explore les potentialités de l’outil LiDAR pour l’analyse et la cartographie des témoins des aménagements militaires dans le bois des Caures (forêt domaniale de Verdun), lieu des premiers combats de la bataille de Verdun (1916). Le traitement d’images combiné à l’analyse de terrain permet d’établir une typologie et une cartographie inédites de la diversité des vestiges, abris et fossés, et de l’organisation du champ de bataille. [Termes IGN] symbole graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) For the representation of geographic information, the distortion resulting from map projections and transformations is unwanted but unavoidable. Identical circles systematically arranged on the Earth's ellipsoid have been extensively used to symbolize the map distortion. Despite their effectiveness and popularity, these circles are not explicitly associated with any specific polygons in the map, thus possibly impairing their relevance if the map-readers are interested in particular regions. More importantly, for the map transformation specifically targeting polygons such as the area cartogram, placing the circles completely within the polygons becomes necessary because two neighboring polygons in an area cartogram could have distinctive distortion characteristics. This paper proposes new computer algorithms to enable a map-distortion symbolization approach based on inscribed circles entirely contained in polygons either on a projected 2D plane or on the Earth's ellipsoid. These inscribed circles in polygons (ICIP) are rendered as a series of maximum or equal-sized circles that are spatially exclusive, that is, without overlapping. Compared with the systematically arranged identical circles, the ICIP give cartographers certain flexibility and a new option for the map-distortion symbolization. Two area cartograms and three map projections are provided as examples to illustrate their usage and possible contribution in different mapping scenarios. Remote sensing, especially the spaceborne sensors, provides the possibility to monitor a very large scale area in a short time and with regular revisit circle. Damage ranges and damage levels of the destructed urban areas are extremely important information for rescue planning after an event. Rapid mapping of the urban damage levels with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is still challenging. Compared with single-polarization SAR, fully polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) has a better potential to understand the urban damage from the viewpoint of scattering mechanism investigation. In radar polarimetry, the dominant double-bounce scattering mechanism in an urban area is primarily induced by the ground-wall structures and can reflect the changes of these structures. In this sense, urban damage level in terms of destroyed ground-wall structures can be indicated by the reduction of the dominant double-bounce scattering mechanism, which is the basis of this study. This work first establishes and validates the linear relationship between the urban damage level and the proposed polarimetric damage index using polarimetric model-based decomposition. Then, efforts are focused on the development of a rapid urban damage level mapping technique which mainly includes two steps of urban area extraction and polarimetric damage level estimation. The 3.11 East Japan earthquake and tsunami inducing great-scale destruction are adopted for study using L-band multitemporal spaceborne PolSAR data. Experimental studies demonstrate that the estimated damage levels are closely consistent to the ground-truth. The final urban damage level map for the full scene is generated thereafter. Results achieved in this study further validate the necessity of exploring fully polarimetric technique for damage assessment.
