[Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data-sets are seeing increasing use in geology, geomorphology, forestry and urban mapping. The ease of use, affordability and operational flexibility of TLS suggest that demand for it is likely to increase in large-scale mapping studies. However, its advantages may remain restricted to specific environments, because of difficulties in defining bare-ground level in the presence of ground-level vegetation. This paper seeks to clarify the component contributions to TLS elevation error deriving from vegetation occlusion, scan co-registration error, point cloud georeferencing error and target position definition in TLS point cloud data. A multi-scan single-returns TLS point cloud data-set of very high resolution (~250 points/m2) was acquired for an 11 hectare area of open, substantially flat and 100% vegetated coastal saltmarsh, providing data for the empirical quantification of TLS error. Errors deriving from the sources discussed are quantified, clarifying the potential proportional contribution of vegetation to other error sources. Initial data validation is applied to the TLS point cloud data after application of a local-lowest-point selection process, and repeat validation tests are applied to the resulting filtered point cloud after application of a kriging-based error adjustment and data fusion with GPS. The final results highlight the problem of representing bare ground effectively within TLS data captured in the presence of dense ground vegetation and clarify the component contributions of elevation error deriving from surveying and data processing. [Termes IGN] unité phytosociologiqueRésumé : (auteur) An important aspect of marine research is to quantify the areal coverage of benthic communities. It is technically feasible to efficiently obtain images of marine environments at different depths and benthic habitats over large spatial and temporal scales. Currently, there is a large and growing library of digital images to analyze, representing a valuable benthic ecological archive. Benthic coverage is the basis of studies on biodiversity, characterization of communities and evaluation of changes over temporal and spatial scales. However, there is still a lack of automatic or semi-automatic analytical methods for deriving ecologically relevant data from these images. We introduce a software program named Seascape to obtain semi-automatically segmented images (patch outlines) from underwater photographs of benthic communities, where each individual patch (species/categories) is routinely associated to its area cover and perimeter. Seascape is an analog to the classical and better known discipline of landscape ecology approach, which focuses on the concept that communities can be observed as a patch mosaic at any scale. The process starts with a hierarchical segmentation, using a color space criteria adapted to the problem of segmenting complex benthic images. As an endproduct, we obtain a set of images segmented into classified homogenous regions at different resolution levels (hierarchical segmentation). To illustrate the versatility and capacity of Seascape, we analyzed 4 digital images from different habitats and depths: coral reefs (Pacific Ocean), coralligenous communities (NW Mediterranean Sea), deep-water coral reefs (NW Mediterranean Sea) and the Antarctic continental shelf (Weddell Sea). The development of this semi-automatic outline tool and its use for classification constitute an important step forward in the analysis and processing time of underwater seabed images at any scale. [Termes IGN] UltraCamRésumé : (Auteur) This article compares the use of ADS40-52, DMC, and Ultra-CamD digital airborne camera imagery for mapping benthic habitat and identifying boat propeller scars in seagrass habitats. The three image data sets were collected over Redfish Bay, Texas on the same day, under almost identical environmental conditions. Next, the data sets were compared to each another using a variety of criteria. Finally, automated methods were used to create maps of propeller scars and the accuracy of each map was analyzed. Significant findings include: 1- Digital airborne ADS40-52, DMC, and Ultra-Cam imagery can be used to effectively map benthic habitat and propeller scars. 2- Imagery from the DMC and ADS40-52 had the highest spatial accuracy. 3- Spectral separatability of benthic habitat class and propeller scars is best in the DMC and the ADS40-52 imagery. 4- The accuracy of propeller scar maps was highest for maps produced from the ADS40-52 data.
