[Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The Level 2 soil moisture products from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission have been re- leased. The data must be validated under different scenarios of biophysical and climatic conditions. For the current study, the data from January to December 2010 from 20 in situ soil moisture stations from the REMEDHUS soil moisture measurement station network (Spain) were used. A comparison analysis was carried out in terms of the soil moisture content, its spatial variability, and temporal stability. The results show an acceptable level of agreement (R = 0.73, RMSD = 0.069 m3 · m-3, and bias = 0.053 m3 · m-3) between the in situ and satellite data. A slight constant underestimation from the SMOS data set was detected. A centered (bias removed) root-mean-square difference was calculated to account for this persistent bias (RMSDc = 0.044 m3 · m-3). This result is close to the SMOS accuracy objective of 0.04 m3 · m-3. Two conclusions can be drawn: First, SMOS is close to meet the mission accuracy requirements in REMEDHUS, and second, SMOS is able to detect temporal anomalies and the temporal evolution of ground soil moisture, even though the soil moisture was slightly underestimated. Despite a noticeably reduced spatial variability among the SMOS grid cells, the remotely sensed soil moisture shows a spatial pattern of the soil moisture fields on the area scale, in agreement with the site-specific characteristics of REMEDHUS. No differences were found between the use of ascending and descending orbits. In addition, no differences were detected between the use of time-overpass values of in situ soil moisture and that of the daily average. [Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (Auteur) The accurate classification and mapping of individual trees at species level in the savanna ecosystem can provide numerous benefits for the managerial authorities. Such benefits include the mapping of economically useful tree species, which are a key source of food production and fuel wood for the local communities, and of problematic alien invasive and bush encroaching species, which can threaten the integrity of the environment and livelihoods of the local communities. Species level mapping is particularly challenging in African savannas which are complex, heterogeneous, and open environments with high intra-species spectral variability due to differences in geology, topography, rainfall, herbivory and human impacts within relatively short distances. Savanna vegetation are also highly irregular in canopy and crown shape, height and other structural dimensions with a combination of open grassland patches and dense woody thicket – a stark contrast to the more homogeneous forest vegetation. This study classified eight common savanna tree species in the Greater Kruger National Park region, South Africa, using a combination of hyperspectral and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-derived structural parameters, in the form of seven predictor datasets, in an automated Random Forest modelling approach. The most important predictors, which were found to play an important role in the different classification models and contributed to the success of the hybrid dataset model when combined, were species tree height; NDVI; the chlorophyll b wavelength (466 nm) and a selection of raw, continuum removed and Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) bands. It was also concluded that the hybrid predictor dataset Random Forest model yielded the highest classification accuracy and prediction success for the eight savanna tree species with an overall classification accuracy of 87.68% and KHAT value of 0.843. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Questions : Can we adequately model beech distribution based on accompanying vegetation, and how does this compare with a climate model? To what extent does accompanying vegetation predict larger extension of beech at its SW margin compared with current distribution? Do human factors explain the discrepancy between current and potential distribution?
Location : Lowland forests at the SW European range margin of beech.
Methods : We built a logistic regression model of beech presence based on accompanying understorey vegetation using 66 976 plots in the French National Forest Inventory (NFI) network. Explanatory variables were obtained by multivariate reduction of 252 species in NFI plots. The model was calibrated in regions where human impact on beech has been comparatively low. The probability of beech presence was estimated at its SW margin and compared with current distribution. We tested whether forest management factors could explain beech absence in locations where the flora predicted its presence. Performance of this model was compared with a classical climatic-envelope model.
Results : Modelled potential distribution of beech along its SW margin was larger than observed distribution, suggesting area shrinkage under man's influence. Sites where beech was predicted as present but was currently absent were significantly less common in high forest stands, and more common in coppices, plantations and private forests. Characteristics of species replacing beech (early-successional, plantation or exotic species) confirmed the role of forest management and disturbance in beech disappearance. The floristic model provided a finer resolution distribution map than the climatic-envelope model.
Conclusions : Plant communities, together with precise tree species maps, allowed us to estimate manipulation of beech by man, and main silvicultural causes of its disappearance. The improvement in quality of current distribution models has important implications for modelling of niches under future climate scenarios.

[Termes IGN] rayonnement solaireRésumé : (Auteur) Sunlight can have a significant impact on freshwater aquatic communities. Using 64- bit GRASS, a previously generated 18.2 m resolution forest canopy height grid for the State of North Carolina was used as a base elevation layer for calculation of 18.2 m resolution total irradiance (Watt-hours/square meter/day) grids for 365 days of the year. Daily calculations were aggregated annually and overlaid on rasterized 1:24,000-scale USGS hydrology with canopy type and seasonal filters to quantify annual solar irradiation input to streams and rivers in North Carolina. Bare earth calculations of solar irradiation for the aquatic habitats were compared to the canopy filtered calculations. There was substantially less solar irradiation in aquatic habitats under the canopy filtered model. Total solar irradiation for subbasins created from point locations of occurrences of Dwarf wedgemussel (Alasmidonta heterodon) were compared with total solar irradiation for watersheds created from locations with no mussels for the full subbasin, 1 km, and 500 m upstream from the sampling point. There was no significant difference in the amount of total solar irradiation modeled for the subbasins with Dwarf wedgemussel and watersheds with no mussels. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Ecohydrology is an emerging discipline in the environmental sciences. Soil micro-relief is of relevance to various ecohydrological processes such as rainwater redistribution, seed displacement through water runoff, water erosion and plant competition for water. Mechanical-optical methods to characterise the soil surface and its incidence in these processes are time consuming and can produce modifications of soil relief. This research explores a methodology combining non-contact techniques (close range stereophotogrammetry and geostatistical modelling) for microtopographic description with video imagery analysis to formulate quantitative determination of surface water movement and infiltration in undisturbed field plots. The numerical quality of the results obtained was tested with ad hoc laboratory models representing various elementary landforms (basin, hill and ridge), as well as with infiltration runoff experiments in undisturbed field plots. The requirements to define a minimum set of properly oriented digital images to attain target precision thresholds in modelling soil microtopography for ecohydrological applications are shown as well as the conditions and experimental arrangement to obtain adequate video imagery of water movement on the soil surface. The use of geostatistical algorithms to analyse ecohydrological processes occurring at the soil surface is illustrated with results obtained from field plots. The methodology presented serves to characterise and quantify water-related ecological processes occurring at the soil surface while preserving undisturbed soil conditions. Potential applications are in ecohydrology, soil erosion science and environmental material transport studies.
