[Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) The use of land surface temperature (LST) for monitoring the consumption and water status of crops requires data at fine spatial and temporal resolutions. Unfortunately, the current spaceborne thermal sensors provide data at either high temporal (e.g. MODIS: Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer) or high spatial (e.g. Landsat) resolution separately. Disaggregating low spatial resolution (LR) LST data using ancillary data available at high spatio-temporal resolution could compensate for the lack of high spatial resolution (HR) LST observations. Existing LST downscaling approaches generally rely on the fractional green vegetation cover (fgv) derived from HR reflectances but they do not take into account the soil water availability to explain the spatial variability in LST at HR. In this context, a new method is developed to disaggregate kilometric MODIS LST at 100 m resolution by including the Sentinel-1 (S-1) backscatter, which is indirectly linked to surface soil moisture, in addition to the Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 (L-7 & L-8) reflectances. The approach is tested over two different sites – an 8 km by 8 km irrigated crop area named “R3” and a 12 km by 12 km rainfed area named “Sidi Rahal” in central Morocco (Marrakech) – on the seven dates when S-1, and L-7 or L-8 acquisitions coincide with a one-day precision during the 2015–2016 growing season. The downscaling methods are applied to the 1 km resolution MODIS-Terra LST data, and their performance is assessed by comparing the 100 m disaggregated LST to Landsat LST in three cases: no disaggregation, disaggregation using Landsat fgv only, disaggregation using both Landsat fgv and S-1 backscatter. When including fgv only in the disaggregation procedure, the mean root mean square error in LST decreases from 4.20 to 3.60 °C and the mean correlation coefficient (R) increases from 0.45 to 0.69 compared to the non-disaggregated case within R3. The new methodology including the S-1 backscatter as input to the disaggregation is found to be systematically more accurate on the available dates with a disaggregation mean error decreasing to 3.35 °C and a mean R increasing to 0.75. [Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Context : Climate change is expected to increase natural hazards in European forests. Uncertainty in expected tree mortality and resulting potential economic consequences complicate regeneration decisions.
Aims : This study aims to analyze the economic consequences of altered survival probabilities for mixing Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) under different climate change scenarios. We investigate whether management strategies such as species selection and type of mixture (mixed stands vs. block mixture) could mitigate adverse financial effects of climate change.
Methods : The bio-economic modelling approach combines a parametric survival model with modern portfolio theory. We estimate the economically optimal species mix under climate change, accounting for the biophysical and economic effects of tree mixtures. The approach is demonstrated using an example from Southeast Germany.
Results : The optimal tree species mixtures under simulated climate change effects could buffer but not completely mitigate undesirable economic consequences. Even under optimally mixed forest stands, the risk-adjusted economic value decreased by 28%. Mixed stands economically outperform block mixtures for all climate scenarios.
Conclusion : Our results underline the importance of mixed stands to mitigate the economic consequences of climate change. Mechanistic bio-economic models help to understand consequences of uncertain input variables and to design purposeful adaptation strategies.Numéro de notice : A2019-041 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-018-0793-8 Date de publication en ligne : 08/02/2019 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-018-0793-8 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=92039

[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Background: Wet tropical forests of Chocó, along the Pacific Coast of Colombia, are known for their high plant diversity and endemic species. With increasing pressure of degradation and deforestation, these forests have been prioritized for conservation and carbon offset through Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) mechanisms. We provide the first regional assessment of forest structure and aboveground biomass using measurements from a combination of ground tree inventories and airborne Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar). More than 80,000 ha of lidar samples were collected based on a stratified random sampling to provide a regionally unbiased quantification of forest structure of Chocó across gradients of vegetation structure, disturbance and elevation. We developed a model to convert measurements of vertical structure of forests into aboveground biomass (AGB) for terra firme, wetlands, and mangrove forests. We used the Random Forest machine learning model and a formal uncertainty analysis to map forest height and AGB at 1-ha spatial resolution for the entire pacific coastal region using spaceborne data, extending from the coast to higher elevation of Andean forests.
Results: Upland Chocó forests have a mean canopy height of 21.8 m and AGB of 233.0 Mg/ha, while wetland forests are characterized by a lower height and AGB (13.5 m and 117.5 Mg/a). Mangroves have a lower mean height than upland forests (16.5 m), but have a similar AGB as upland forests (229.9 Mg/ha) due to their high wood density. Within the terra firme forest class, intact forests have the highest AGB (244.3 ± 34.8 Mg/ha) followed by degraded and secondary forests with 212.57 ± 62.40 Mg/ha of biomass. Forest degradation varies in biomass loss from small-scale selective logging and firewood harvesting to large-scale tree removals for gold mining, settlements, and illegal logging. Our findings suggest that the forest degradation has already caused the loss of more than 115 million tons of dry biomass, or 58 million tons of carbon.
Conclusions: Our assessment of carbon stocks and forest degradation can be used as a reference for reporting on the state of the Chocó forests to REDD+ projects and to encourage restoration efforts through conservation and climate mitigation policies.
