[Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] The term close-to-nature silviculture already contains some ambiguity since (silvi) culture implies the act of forest use. This notion was coined a long time ago by well-known silviculturists (Gayer 1885; Engler 1905; Leibundgut 1943 and more) to characterise a new form of forest management that differs from plantation forestry and the clear-cut system. The aim was a paradigmatic alternative to create multi-storeyed and rich mixed forest stands, with forest management emulating natural processes and seamless replacement of generations. Which of these processes should be selected and the degree to which natural forest dynamics should be imitated have not yet been specifically defined because the term was conceived in a general and conceptual sense and, furthermore, the aim has never been to let nature work alone. We can here quote Leibundgut (1943, p. 152) [transl. from German] “The main task of silviculture is to maximise and maintain the value produced by the forest”. Such a formulation is still quite relevant today, when the term “value” is understood in a broader sense. Actually, it would be more appropriate to use the term “utility” (original term “utilité”) in the sense of Biolley (1901). [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Topographic heterogeneity under dry continental climate can create a landscape mosaic called “exposure-related forest-steppe”, characterized by a regular pattern of forest on the north- and steppe on the south-facing slopes. Here we identify the climatic and topographic determinants of this landscape type, using a model of the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia because they (1) contain large areas of forest-steppe together with forested and steppe landscapes, and (2) possess well-preserved natural land-cover. Based on the Landsat land-cover classification and digital elevation model we identified areas containing exposure-related forest-steppe and modeled their climatic and topographic thresholds using regression trees. The models showed that in the Altai exposure-related forest-steppe is most common in topographically heterogeneous areas with May–September precipitation of 226–377 mm and a mean July temperature of 13.8–15.6 °C. Its existence is jointly determined by hilly topography and a climate that is moist enough to support tree growth on north-facing slopes, but insufficiently so to support woodland development on south-facing slopes. This is consistent with the concept of effective topographic heterogeneity, suggesting that topographic heterogeneity on the landscape level is translated into high habitat diversity and species diversity only within a certain range of climatic conditions. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The methodological foundations of the recently published Manual for Annex I Habitats monitoring in Italy, edited by the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) with the scientific support of the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (SISV), are here presented, discussed and related to the most consolidated and acknowledged scientific advances in the field of Vegetation science. The proposed methodologies aim at offering simple, yet effective, protocols and procedures towards a harmonized data collection, by way of standardized and shared technical tools, resulting in comparable evaluations of the conservation status of Annex I Habitats. The methodological framework was developed by experts including a large team of members of the SISV. Big efforts were deployed to provide indicators and parameters for biodiversity monitoring able to catch its complexity, yet simple enough to be easily measured. Diagnosis and syntaxonomical correspondences of Habitat types, sampling procedure, plot size, distribution mapping, typical species are among the principal issues here examined through a widely shared scientific discussion. The final product is a comprehensive Manual, which offers practical but scientifically sound methodological tools for an efficient and effective monitoring of Annex I Habitats. The importance of bridging across the science-policy interface is emphasized, in a general will to improve the impact of Vegetation science on conservation policy development in Europe. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture and nutritional characteristics are frequently assessed using plant species and community bioindication, e.g., the Ellenberg system of species indicator values. This method, based on complete inventories of plant species present in plots, is time-consuming, which could prevent its general use for forest or other natural land management. Our aim was to determine the impact of a reduction in the time spent to carry out a floristic inventory on the quality of soil characteristic assessment using plant bioindication. We compared the measurements of soil pH-H2O (pH), organic carbon to total nitrogen ratio (C:N) and base saturation (BS) in the 0–5 cm soil layer of 470 plots with the same variables estimated from floristic inventories of increasing duration, using plant indicator values (IV) from the EcoPlant database. The performance of predictions was evaluated by the square of the linear correlation coefficient between measured and predicted values (R2) and the root mean square error (RMSE) of predictions.
The number rather than the percentage of total plot species used for the estimations was determinant for the prediction of soil pH quality. Performance of bioindication of pH, BS and C:N reached the maximum R2 using the first 20–25 species recorded per plot, corresponding to a 14-min-long floristic inventory in comparison to a mean of 28 min spent to carry out a complete floristic inventory. A precision of prediction of 80% of the maximal precision was obtained after 4–5 min (6–12 inventoried species) for the three studied variables. These results are independent of the nutritional capability of the soils and were similar at the national and local scales. In order to estimate soil nutritional resources by plant bioindication, it is feasible to significantly reduce the time spent on floristic inventories and, thus, their cost. This is especially useful when the goal is to map the soil quality for decision-making in forest management.Numéro de notice : A2016--084 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.ecolind.2016.05.047 Date de publication en ligne : 25/07/2016 En ligne : http://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecolind.2016.05.047 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=84562
