[Termes IGN] valeur économiqueRésumé : (auteur) We propose a review of empirical studies dealing with the monetary valuation of forest ecosystem services in China. The analysis focuses on: assessing methodological differences between studies; highlighting the variation of monetary values across different ecosystem service types; and identifying and discussing future research needs. Based on a systematic search, our data set consists of 12 studies published in peer-reviewed journals in English, dealing with 72 forest ecosystem services. Our results suggest that domestic literature is affected by elusive categorization of ecosystem services and methodological inconsistencies. The wide variation in monetary values of Chinese forest ecosystem services, a phenomenon also observed in global level reviews, can be partially explained by the methodological heterogeneity of the studies. Future research could benefit from a strengthened and more standardized methodological approach, drawing from relevant methods and indicators employed in the reviewed domestic articles, as well as from insights and solutions proposed in the international empirical and conceptual literature. The exceptional forest restoration policy landscape coupled with the increasing establishment of commercial plantations offer important research opportunities for monetary valuation in China. Efforts should be directed towards assessing marginal values of ecosystem services in land-use changes over time, and benefit flows among different stakeholders. Its prevalence in plant communities (mycorrhization) at larger spatial scales has so far been mostly qualitative, while quantitative studies incorporating the mycorrhizal traits of plant species are scarce. This study aims to: (1) determine the variation in general and arbuscular mycorrhization in temperate forests and grasslands, (2) study the effects of soil N, pH and moisture on mycorrhization, and (3) determine the relationships between mycorrhization and plant diversity.
Location : Temperate forests and grasslands in Estonia, Northern Europe.
Methods : To quantify mycorrhization we used a plant community mycorrhization index – community mean of mycorrhizal status weighted by plant species abundances. The effects of edaphic factors characterized by cumulative Ellenberg values on mycorrhization were analysed using linear mixed models, and the relationship between mycorrhization and diversity was evaluated with partial correlation and variance partitioning.
Results : General mycorrhization was higher in forests and lower in grasslands, opposite to arbuscular mycorrhization. Soil N, pH and moisture negatively impacted general mycorrhization, whereas arbuscular mycorrhization was positively affected by soil pH and negatively by soil N and moisture. Plant species richness was negatively correlated with general mycorrhization in forests, whereas arbuscular mycorrhization was positively associated with plant species richness, Shannon and Simpson indices in forests and across ecosystems.
Conclusions : Mycorrhization is highly dependent on soil conditions and related to plant diversity, showing its importance for vegetation science. In particular, the ability of low frequencies to deeply penetrate dense vegetation, allows P band radar data to retrieve high biomass levels that can be encountered over forests, where other frequencies show their limitations. The BIOMASS mission, consisting in the launch of a P band SAR sensor, has been selected by ESA as the 7th Earth Explorer mission, will allow to estimate the world’s forest biomass and its changes. However, forests observe strong spatial differences in terms of structure or surface topography. These differences induce significant changes of the scattering mechanism occurring within a resolution cell. At global scale, the differences are obvious (for example between boreal and tropical regions), but at regional scale, strong differences can also be observed (for example gallery forests within savannahs, forest edges, or changes due to surface topography). The consideration of these changes is a major issue to improve the robustness of the inversion algorithm in order to reduce the errors of the biomass estimations. Up to now, no unique inversion method has been developed, that would be valid over the wide variety of forests types. An alternative is to propose a classification method that will allow to discriminate between forest types in terms of radar scattering behavior in order to apply the best suited algorithm. This is the aim of the present study. The focus is put on the analysis of the different polarimetric indices that can be derived from the fully polarimetric data acquired during the BIOMASS mission. Then the contribution of other data that should be concomitant to the BIOMASS mission, such as Sentinel-1 at C band or PALSAR2 at L band will also be investigated. This study will be based on the analysis of P band SAR data acquired during airborne campaigns other boreal (BioSAR 1 and 2) and tropical (TropiSAR, AfriSAR) forests, over a wide range of biomass value and terrain conditions.
