[Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (auteur) The analysis of chlorophyll concentration based on spectroscopy has great importance for monitoring the growth state and guiding the precision nitrogen management of potato crops in the field. A suitable data processing and modeling method could improve the stability and accuracy of chlorophyll analysis. To develop such a method, we collected the modelling data by conducting field experiments at the tillering, tuber-formation, tuber-bulking, and tuber-maturity stages in 2018. A chlorophyll analysis model was established using the partial least-square (PLS) algorithm based on original reflectance, standard normal variate reflectance, and wavelet features (WFs) under different decomposition scales (21–210, Scales 1–10), which were optimized by the competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) algorithm. The performances of various models were compared. The WFs under Scale 3 had the strongest correlation with chlorophyll concentration with a correlation coefficient of −0.82. In the model calibration process, the optimal model was the Scale3-CARS-PLS, which was established based on the sensitive WFs under Scale 3 selected by CARS, with the largest coefficient of determination of calibration set (R2c) of 0.93 and the smallest R2c−R2cv value of 0.14. In the model validation process, the Scale3-CARS-PLS model had the largest coefficient of determination of validation set (R2v) of 0.85 and the smallest root–mean–square error of cross-validation (RMSEV) value of 2.77 mg/L, demonstrating good prediction capability of chlorophyll concentration. Finally, the analysis performance of the Scale3-CARS-PLS model was measured using the testing data collected in 2020; the R2 and RMSE values were 0.69 and 3.36 mg/L, showing excellent applicability. Therefore, the Scale3-CARS-PLS model could be used to analyze chlorophyll concentration. This study indicated the best decomposition scale of continuous wavelet transform and provided an important support method for chlorophyll analysis in the potato crops. The individual tree information for such species is necessary for practical forest management and for conservation purposes. Digital aerial photogrammetry derived from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV-DAP) can provide fine spatial and spectral information, as well as information on the three-dimensional (3D) structure of a forest canopy. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data enable area-wide 3D tree mapping and provide accurate forest floor terrain information. In this study, we evaluated the potential use of UAV-DAP and LiDAR data for the estimation of individual tree location and diameter at breast height (DBH) values of large-size high-value timber species in northern Japanese mixed-wood forests. We performed multiresolution segmentation of UAV-DAP orthophotographs to derive individual tree crown. We used object-based image analysis and random forest algorithm to classify the forest canopy into five categories: three high-value timber species, other broadleaf species, and conifer species. The UAV-DAP technique produced overall accuracy values of 73% and 63% for classification of the forest canopy in two forest management sub-compartments. In addition, we estimated individual tree DBH Values of high-value timber species through field survey, LiDAR, and UAV-DAP data. The results indicated that UAV-DAP can predict individual tree DBH Values, with comparable accuracy to DBH prediction using field and LiDAR data. The results of this study are useful for forest managers when searching for high-value timber trees and estimating tree size in large mixed-wood forests and can be applied in single-tree management systems for high-value timber species. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Overdependence on and exploitation of forest resources have significantly transformed the natural reserve forest of Sundarban, which shares the largest mangrove territory in the world, into a great degradation status. By observing these, a most pressing concern is how much degradation occurred in the past, and what will be the scenarios in the future if they continue? To confirm the degradation status in the past decades and reveal the future trend, we took Sundarban Reserve Forest (SRF) as an example, and used satellite Earth observation historical Landsat imagery between 1989 and 2019 as existing data and primary data. Moreover, a geographic information system model was considered to estimate land cover (LC) change and spatial health quality of the SRF from 1989 to 2029 based on the large and small tree categories. The maximum likelihood classifier (MLC) technique was employed to classify the historical images with five different LC types, which were further considered for future projection (2029) including trends based on 2019 simulation results from 1989 and 2019 LC maps using the Markov-cellular automata model. The overall accuracy achieved was 82.30%~90.49% with a kappa value of 0.75~0.87. The historical result showed forest degradation in the past (1989–2019) of 4773.02 ha yr−1, considered as great forest degradation (GFD) and showed a declining status when moving with the projection (2019–2029) of 1508.53 ha yr−1 and overall there was a decline of 3956.90 ha yr−1 in the 1989–2029 time period. Moreover, the study also observed that dense forest was gradually degraded (good to bad) but, conversely, light forest was enhanced, which will continue in the future even to 2029 if no effective management is carried out. Therefore, by observing the GFD, through spatial forest health quality and forest degradation mapping and assessment, the study suggests a few policies that require the immediate attention of forest policy-makers to implement them immediately and ensure sustainable development in the SRF. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Since the 1990’s, forest resource maps and small area estimates have been produced by combining national forest inventory (NFI) field plot data, optical satellite images and numerical map data using a non-parametric k-nearest neighbour method. In Finland, thematic maps of forest variables have been produced by the means of multi-source NFI (MS-NFI) for eight to ten times depending on the geographical area, but the resulting time series have not been systematically utilized. The objective of this study was to explore the possibilities of the time series for monitoring the key ecosystem condition indicators for forests. To this end, a contextual Mann-Kendall (CMK) test was applied to detect trends in time-series of two decades of thematic maps. The usefulness of the observed trends may depend both on the scale of the phenomena themselves and the uncertainties involved in the maps. Thus, several spatial scales were tested: the MS-NFI maps at 16 × 16 m2 pixel size and units of 240 × 240 m2, 1200 × 1200 m2 and 12 000 × 12 000 m2 aggregated from the MS-NFI map data. The CMK test detected areas of significant increasing trends of mean volume on both study sites and at various unit sizes except for the original thematic map pixel size. For other variables such as the mean volume of tree species groups, the proportion of broadleaved tree species and the stand age, significant trends were mostly found only for the largest unit size, 12 000 × 12 000 m2. The multiple testing corrections decreased the amount of significant p-values from the CMK test strongly. The study showed that significant trends can be detected enabling indicators of ecosystem services to be monitored from a time-series of satellite image-based thematic forest maps. [Termes IGN] Java (île de)Résumé : (auteur) This article discusses an experiment on the estimation of rubber tree biomass using L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), to support recent efforts to include trees outside forest in global biomass and carbon accounting. We noted that date of acquisition is important, but certainly the selection of allometric equation serving as the reference data was paramount. Similarly, choosing a proper form of fully polarimetric data was instrumental, although this requires validation in different environmental settings. As expected, modern data mining approaches consistently delivered high accuracy. Extreme learning machine yielded the best estimate in terms of R2 (0.98) and RMSE (1.88 Mg/ha); nonetheless, it also delivered a slight negative estimation. In this case, we found that a variant of random forest produced an outcome without any negative estimation. This research suggests that estimated biomass or carbon information from rubber plantations would be an invaluable candidate for the improvement of global biomass data.
