[Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (Auteur) A new integrated approach, involving continuum-removed absorption features, the red edge position and neural networks, is developed and applied to map grass nitrogen concentration in an African savanna rangeland. Nitrogen, which largely determines the nutritional quality of grasslands, is commonly the most limiting nutrient for grazers. Therefore, the remote sensing of foliar nitrogen concentration in savanna rangelands is important for an improved understanding of the distribution and feeding patterns of wildlife. Continuum removal was applied on two absorption features located in the visible (R 550-757) and the SWIR (R 2015-2199) from an atmospherically corrected HYMAP MK1 image. A feature selection algorithm was used to select wavelength variables from the absorption features. Selected band depths from the absorption features as well as the red edge position (REP) were input into a backpropagation neural network. The best-trained neural network was used to map nitrogen concentration over the whole study area. Results indicate that the new integrated approach could explain 60% of the variation in savanna grass nitrogen concentration on an independent test data set, with a root mean square error (rmse) of 0. 13 (+ 8.3 0% of the mean observed nitrogen concentration). This result is better compared to the result obtained using multiple linear regression, which yielded an R of 38%, with a RMSE of 0.16 (+ 10.30% of the mean observed nitrogen concentration) on an independent test data set. The study demonstrates the potential of airborne hyperspectral data and neural networks to estimate and ultimately to map nitrogen concentration in the mixed species environments of Southern Africa. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The backscattering coefficient ä from a time series of ERS-2 SAR data showed high correlation (r 2 =0.94) and high sensitivity to the observed surface soil moisture at a field scale. The observations agreed well with the simulations from the two surface scattering models tested in the study area. A single coincidence of the ERS-2 and RADARSAT missions, with two different polarizations, provided an opportunity to estimate soil moisture over a large area by inverting the Dubois model. The estimates were validated with the field observations over a small area and are in good agreement with standard error of estimate (SEE) equal to 1.01 cm3 cm-3. Furthermore, different soil moisture estimation methods were tested and compared with the observations to better understand the temporal and spatial variability of this important parameter. Soil moisture at a point was simulated using three hydrological models and compared with the radar backscattering and the point observations. There is a large variation in the responses among them. Simple statistical approaches viz., coefficient of variation and principal component analysis were used for mapping the spatial patterns of soil moisture over a large area using a time series of ERS-2 data. These simple methods helped to map areas where the moisture availability is not varying much. This information about soil moisture distribution is of vital importance to the hydrological processes especially the variable source area concept. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) The effect of soil surface texture on spectral reflectance is reported for a site in the Mojave Desert. Abandoned central-pivot agricultural fields in the Manix Basin of southeastern California have introduced deflationary surface, into the otherwise stable, armored desert surface. This has resulted in sand plumes, eroded from the fields by wind, transported by saltation and deposited downwind of the fields. Grain size analysis of this wind-transported material reveals a fractionation by size within the plume, with smaller effective particle size toward the toe of the plume. This fractionation results from the greater mobility of smaller particles, and the longer saltation paths they take once airborne. Radiative transfer modeling of quartz grains with absorbing rinds indicates that the difference in grain size observed in the field should be revealed in apparent surface reflectance and are resolvable within the noise-equivalent delta-reflectance of the Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) instrument. Analysis of AVIRIS-derived apparent surface reflectance demonstrates the expected negative correlation between effective grain size of sand in the plume and reflectance, with the most significant correlations in the short-wave infrared. The change in reflectance per mm change in particle diameter was - 0.06 at & ~ 1.7 um and - 0.08 at & ~ 2.2 um with R2 = 0.89 and 0.93, respectively.
