However, the verification of a relationship between the traditional descriptors of orthopteran assemblage structure and plant community patterns is not straightforward. We explore the usefulness of the concept of life forms to provide insights on such ecosystem level relationship. For this purpose, thirty sample sites in semi-natural calcareous grasslands were classified according to the relative proportion of dominant herbaceous plant life forms. Orthopteran species were grouped in four categories, based on the Bei-Bienko’s life form categorization. The association among plant communities, orthopteran assemblages and environmental factors was tested by means of canonical correspondence analysis. Orthoptera groups were found to be associated with distinct plant communities, also indicating the effect of vegetation change on orthopteran assemblages. In particular, geobionta species were associated with all the most disturbed plant communities, while chortobionta and thamnobionta seemed to be dependent on better preserved grassland types. Therefore, the use of life forms could help informing on the relationships of orthopteran assemblages with grassland conservation state. Information on such community relationships at the local scale could also assist managers in the interpretation of habitat change maps in terms of biodiversity changes. [Termes IGN] TorontoRésumé : (auteur) Studies have shown that natural environments can enhance health and here we build upon that work by examining the associations between comprehensive greenspace metrics and health. We focused on a large urban population center (Toronto, Canada) and related the two domains by combining high-resolution satellite imagery and individual tree data from Toronto with questionnaire-based self-reports of general health perception, cardio-metabolic conditions and mental illnesses from the Ontario Health Study. Results from multiple regressions and multivariate canonical correlation analyses suggest that people who live in neighborhoods with a higher density of trees on their streets report significantly higher health perception and significantly less cardio-metabolic conditions (controlling for socio-economic and demographic factors). We find that having 10 more trees in a city block, on average, improves health perception in ways comparable to an increase in annual personal income of $10,000 and moving to a neighborhood with $10,000 higher median income or being 7 years younger. We also find that having 11 more trees in a city block, on average, decreases cardio-metabolic conditions in ways comparable to an increase in annual personal income of $20,000 and moving to a neighborhood with $20,000 higher median income or being 1.4 years younger. Une approche régionale, par télédétection spatiale de moyenne résolution spatiale, est une bonne échelle d'investigation. Il est cependant nécessaire d'avoir une démarche méthodologique garantissant un résultat homogène sur l'ensemble du territoire tout en aplanissant les difficultés d'identification liées à la nature protéiforme de l'objet géographique zone humide. Pour cela, nous proposons de maximiser les possibilités d'identification des zones humides en sélectionnant des images représentatives de situations hydro-climatiques favorables à la détection d'humidité de surface. La méthode statistique du CUSUM est utilisée afin de déterminer la période la plus propice, puis une méthode hybride alliant traitement des images sélectionnées et données exogènes, est développée. Context : Predicted increases in drought frequency and intense heatwaves are expected to lead to dieback of sensitive tree species. Stomatal closure restricts CO2 input into the leaf, resulting in imbalances between light energy-driven electron transport rate and electron consumption in the Calvin cycle. Reactive oxygen species formed under these circumstances have to be kept under control by photoprotective and antioxidative defence systems.
Aims : We hypothesised that these defence systems behave differently in tree species from contrasting habitats.
Methods : Acacia aneura (adapted to arid habitats) and Acacia melanoxylon (adapted to humid habitats) were exposed to two water treatments for 50 days including two short heatwave periods. Responses were assessed by gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and concentrations of antioxidants (phyllodes, roots).
Results : Photosynthesis and quantum yield of photochemistry decreased significantly in both Acacia species, especially after water was withheld in combination with the second heatwave episode. In phyllodes, the concentration of antioxidants remained unchanged until exposure to severe drought and heatwave conditions (except for A. melanoxylon where changes in glutathione concentration were observed prior to exposure to severe stress), but after water was withheld and the second heatwave occurred, oxidised forms of glutathione increased. After exposure to the second heatwave, well-watered seedlings of A. melanoxylon but not A. aneura increased ascorbic acid concentration in phyllodes. Under well-watered conditions, Acacia species also showed increased concentration of antioxidants in roots following heatwaves.
Conclusions : Both Acacia species showed photodamage to photosystem II (PSII) after water was withheld and the second heatwave imposed, but with more gradual response in A. aneura. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) According to the EU Habitats Directive, heathlands are “natural habitats of community interest”. Heathland management aims at conserving these habitats threatened by various changes, including successional processes leading to forest vegetation. We investigate the dynamics of woody species to the detriment of heathland over a period of 60 years in the Fontainebleau forest and we examine the effects of soil types, soil depth and topography parameters on heathland stability. We assess changes in forest cover between 1946 and 2003 by comparing vegetation maps derived from aerial photographs coupled to GIS analyses. The results show the loss of more than 75% of heathland during 1946–2003 due to tree colonisation of abandoned heathland. We detected differences in the dynamics of colonisation between coniferous and deciduous trees. The colonisation of heathland by coniferous species was faster over the last 20 years of our study period. Tree encroachment was faster in north-facing areas and in areas of acidic luvisols. While this dynamic was very slow in acid sandstone soils, heathland stability was more important in shallow soils on flat and south facing areas. Our study has the potential to assist land managers in selecting those heathland areas that will be easier to conserve and/or to restore by focusing on areas and spatial conditions that prevent forest colonisation and hence favour the long-term stability of heathland.
