[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) In forest ecosystems, conservation is often considered in the absence of any long-term dynamic perspective, yet dynamic processes extend over hundreds of years. Saproxylic taxa represent about 25% of the species diversity in temperate and boreal forests and they depend on both spatial and temporal continuity in the availability of deadwood and certain tree microhabitats. Our study focused on the dynamics of deadwood and tree microhabitats throughout the silvigenetic cycle in 32 unharvested European mountain mixed forests. Our dataset contained 178 plots classified into one of five forest development phases (regeneration, establishing, growing, culmination and disintegration). We analyzed how the amount and quality of deadwood and microhabitats varied according to the five phases. Contrary to expectations, deadwood and tree microhabitat availability remained more or less stable throughout the silvigenetic cycle, both in quantity and diversity. Furthermore, whether the forests were dominated by broadleaves or conifers, there were no significant differences in terms of deadwood or tree microhabitat dynamics. Pioneer (Betula spp., Salix spp.) and post-pioneer species (Fraxinus exelsior, Sorbus spp., Prunus avium) played an important role throughout the silvigenetic cycle by providing a diversity of deadwood when deadwood from the dominant species (i.e. Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica, Picea abies) was scarce. Understanding the dynamics of deadwood and tree microhabitats may help us provide a model for forest managers who intend to emulate natural forest dynamics and will also improve our understanding of the relationship between forest dynamics and biodiversity conservation. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Aim : We hypothesize that the level of plant invasion at the scale of vegetation plots is affected by the different sizes of regional species pools of alien plants adapted to particular habitats. We test these species-pool effects in the context of alien species exchange between analogous habitats on two continents.
Location : North and South Carolina, and the Czech Republic (both as native and invaded range).
Methods : We identified native and alien vascular plant species within 6059 vegetation plots from 27 habitats of eastern North America and Central Europe. We compared the habitats’ level of invasion, expressed as the proportion of alien species in a representative sample of vegetation plots from each habitat, with the contribution of each habitat to the alien species pool, calculated as the proportion of species of this habitat that are native to one continent and donated as aliens to the other.
Results : A habitat's level of invasion on one continent increases with the proportion of alien species donated to its regional species pools by analogous habitats on the other continent, i.e. the more of its native species a habitat contributes as aliens, the more of them establish in analogous recipient habitats (direct species-pool effect). The habitat's level of invasion on the same continent also increases with the proportion of native species that those habitats themselves donate to regional species pools on the other continent, i.e. a habitat that gives many aliens also receives many aliens (reciprocal species-pool effect).
Main conclusions : We demonstrate that when a habitat on one continent donates more of its native species to the alien species pool, the analogous habitat on the recipient continent also contains a greater number of aliens. The same donor habitat is itself also the recipient of more alien species invading from the analogous habitats of other continents.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The Vegetation Prodrome of Italy was promoted in 2012 by the Italian “Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection”,in collaboration with the “Italian Society of Botany”, to provide a comprehensive and systematic catalogue and description ofItalian plant communities. The Prodrome that is presented in this paper is the first full organic synthesis of the vegetation ofItaly at the alliance syntaxonomic level. It fulfils several needs, the main one being a unified and comprehensive nationalframework that may make an important contribution to the definition of the European Vegetation Prodrome. Syntaxonomy,as well as taxonomy, is sometimes based on considerations that may in part diverge: several authors tend to favour modelsthat are divisive or aggregative to a greater or lesser extent in terms of flora, biogeography and ecology. These different pointsof view stimulate the scientific debate and allow the adoption of a framework that is more widely supported. The Prodromeincludes 75 classes, 2 subclasses, 175 orders, 6 suborders and 393 alliances. The classes were grouped into nine broadcategories according to structural, physiognomic and synecological elements rather than to syntaxonomic criteria. The rank, full valid name, any synonymies and incorrect names are provided for eachsyntaxon. The short declaration highlights thephysiognomy, synecology, syndynamics and distribution of the plant communities that belong to thesyntaxon. The Prodromeof the Italian Vegetation is linked to the European Strategy for Biodiversity, the European Habitats Directive and theEuropean Working Groups related to the ecosystems and their services. In addition to basic applications, the Prodrome canbe used as a framework for scientific research related to the investigation of the relationships between plant communities andthe environmental factors that influence their composition and distribution.
