The four populations included a control with no insects and those with low, medium and high insect populations. The plants were studied in two experiments on each of two dates: 14 October 2010 and 21 July 2011. Two procedures were used to determine the optimum bands for discriminating among treatments: least significant difference (LSD) and stepwise discriminant analysis. The LSD comparison test results for both October and July experiments showed that generally the best bands for separating among treatments occurred in the green (505–595 nm), red (605–635 nm), red-near-infrared (NIR; 695–745 nm) edge and NIR (755–895 nm) regions where three to four treatments could be distinguished. Stepwise discriminant analysis identified four bands in the green, red and red-NIR edge to be significant to discriminate among the four treatments in Experiment 1 in October. For Experiment 2 in October, discriminant analysis identified five bands in the blue, green, red and NIR regions to be significant for distinguishing among the treatments. In Experiment 1 in July, five bands in the blue, green, red-NIR edge and NIR regions were found to be significant to discriminate among the treatments. For Experiment 2 in July, discriminant analysis identified four bands in the blue, green and red-NIR edge regions to be significant to discriminate among the treatments. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) provides opportunities to generate high-quality digital elevation models (DEMs) even in wetland environments. Our project, performed over the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia during the spring of 2010, shows that several, distinctive factors must be considered to ensure successful wetland LiDAR projects. Some of the challenges include selecting optimal flight times in accordance with weather variability and water levels, having effective and quality control protocols, applying and developing filtering and interpolation algorithms, breaklines in swamps and accounting for data striping and noise. While some of these issues are faced in any airborne LiDAR acquisition, many of these require special consideration in a low-slope wetland environment with water saturated soils, widespread shallow water, and sediments and extensive vegetation. An examination of these issues and how they were handled will help in ensuring the success of future LiDAR acquisitions and, in particular, will advance knowledge of producing quality DEMs in wetland environments. [Termes IGN] méthode des moindres carrésRésumé : (Auteur) Discriminating commercial tree species using hyperspectral remote sensing techniques is critical in monitoring the spatial distributions and compositions of commercial forests. However, issues related to data dimensionality and multicollinearity limit the successful application of the technology. The aim of this study was to examine the utility of the partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) technique in accurately classifying six exotic commercial forest species (Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus nitens, Eucalyptus smithii, Pinus patula, Pinus elliotii and Acacia mearnsii) using airborne AISA Eagle hyperspectral imagery (393–900 nm). Additionally, the variable importance in the projection (VIP) method was used to identify subsets of bands that could successfully discriminate the forest species. Results indicated that the PLS-DA model that used all the AISA Eagle bands (n = 230) produced an overall accuracy of 80.61% and a kappa value of 0.77, with user’s and producer’s accuracies ranging from 50% to 100%. In comparison, incorporating the optimal subset of VIP selected wavebands (n = 78) in the PLS-DA model resulted in an improved overall accuracy of 88.78% and a kappa value of 0.87, with user’s and producer’s accuracies ranging from 70% to 100%. Bands located predominantly within the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (393–723 nm) showed the most capability in terms of discriminating between the six commercial forest species. Overall, the research has demonstrated the potential of using PLS-DA for reducing the dimensionality of hyperspectral datasets as well as determining the optimal subset of bands to produce the highest classification accuracies. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Landscape genetics, which considers genetic population structure in the context of spatially referenced parameters in the surrounding landscape, has been shown to be extremely useful for wildlife management. Unfortunately its widespread uptake beyond the research community is hampered due to a lack of effective communication of usable information in a suitable format for application by stakeholders such as wildlife regulators or managers. To improve the communication of suitable information, geovisualization of results should be facilitated in a comprehensible format for stakeholders without GIS or genetic expertise. While specialist applications exist, alternative accessible solutions do not provide adequate support for the visualization of multi-attribute spatially referenced genetic population structure information. As a solution, we document our exploration for an appropriate symbology to communicate landscape genetic information through an accessible, web-based interface. A full problem description, review of available technologies, development rationale, and discussion of the symbology exploration are provided.
