[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this work was to assess techniques of land cover change detection in areas of Brazilian Forest and Savanna, using Landsat 5/TM images, and two iterative statistical methodologies based on geographical objects. The sensitivity of the methodologies was assessed in relation to the heterogeneity of the input data, the use of reflectance data and vegetation indices, and the use of different levels of confidence. The periods analyzed were from 2000 to 2006, and from 2006 to 2010. After the segmentation of images, the descriptive statistics average and standard deviation of each object were extracted. The determination of change objects was realized in an iterative way based on the Mahalanobis Distance and the chi-square distribution. The results were validated with an early visual detection and analyzed according to Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve. Significant gains were obtained by using vegetation masks and bands 3 and 4 for both areas tested with 94,67% and 95,02% of the objects correctly detected as changes, respectively for the areas of Forest and Savanna. The use of the NDVI and different images were not satisfactory in this study. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (auteur) The Massaciuccoli Lake (northern Tuscany, Italy) Natura 2000 habitat map (1:10,000) was compiled from photo-interpretation and recent phytosociological studies, integrated by field surveys of the vegetation units. Conventional geographical information system procedures were used to select and manage spatial information. The following attributes were assigned to each map polygon: (i) vegetation type, (ii) habitat typology and (iii) percentage cover of the habitat type. Habitat types covering polygons smaller than 50 m2 were treated as points. A total of nine Natura 2000 habitat types were identified and mapped; they cover almost 20% of the study area. The results show that of all sites on the Italian peninsula, Lake Massaciuccoli Calcareous fens with Cladium mariscus covers the largest surface area and is crucial for the national conservation of this habitat type. It is also of priority importance in Europe. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) This study aimed at testing the hypothesis that augmenting Landsat TM-based models for predicting soil organic carbon (SOC) with auxiliary data about variables that might affect the spatial distribution of SOC might improve the predictability of these models in the Zarqa Basin in Jordan (a typical semi-arid watershed) and enable them to be used for implementing carbon crediting programs in semi-arid environments. Six modeling procedures, namely stepwise regression, partial least squares, recursive partitioning analysis, screening regression analysis, artificial neural networks, and combined models, were calibrated and validated for the basin and for the land cover types that exist in the basin. Although none of the developed models was powerful for predicting SOC, artificial neural networks models were more applicable specifically in agricultural lands. However, the margins of error associated with the best models were high, and hence hindered the applicability of these models in carbon crediting programs in semi-arid environments. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (auteur) Soil moisture content is a key variable for numerous disciplines hence the need for its constant monitoring at a global scale. Satellite imagery is the only mean to fulfil this objective. New generations of satellite sensors such as the Sentinel-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) system provide measurements at fine spatial and temporal scales. In order to validate such estimates dense in-situ networks measuring soil moisture are required. The scarcity of such networks was the main motivation to establish two validation sites over the Biebrza wetlands within the project funded by the ESA (European Space Agency). The sites are covered by grassland and marshland and are internally homogeneous as far as the soil type and vegetation cover are concerned. Each site is equipped with 9 soil moisture monitoring stations installed every 130 m which allows the derivation of reliable mean soil moisture estimates across the site featuring small standard deviation (0.035 m3/m3 for the grassland site and 0.074 m3/m3 for the marshland site). The main objective of the presented study is to review the soil moisture derivation and validation methodologies suitable for the Sentinel-1 SAR satellite data and to describe physiographical settings of the Biebrza validation sites together with the installed instrumentation. Furthermore, the relationship between the time series of soil moisture measurements and Sentinel-1 sigma nought backscatter coefficient (?0) is examined. Ultimately, the validation results of the low resolution SM-DAS-2 soil moisture product are presented due to the unavailability of the high resolution product.
