[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) On the basis of data both new and coming from the literature, the Italian grey alder riparian woods were studied from the syntaxonomic point of view. The floristic-sociological analysis of 119 relevés coming from northern Italy and the comparison with phytosociological tables from neighboring areas (Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, southern Germany and Switzerland) pointed out the occurrence of two distinct associations belonging to Alnion incanae and Fagetalia: the colline-submontane Primulo vulgaris-Alnetum incanae ass. nova and the montane-high montane Aceri-Alnetum incanae. Both these associations are distributed throughout northern Italy and reach their southern limit of distribution in the Tuscan-Emilian Appenines. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) It has been suggested that a heterogeneous environment enhances species richness and allows for the coexistence of species. However, there is increasing evidence that environmental heterogeneity can have no effect or even a negative effect on plant species richness and plant coexistence at a local scale. We examined whether plant species richness increases with local heterogeneity in the water table depth, microtopography, pH and light availability in a swamp forest community at three local spatial scales (grain: 0.6, 1.2 and 11.4 m). We also used the variance partitioning approach to assess the relative contributions of niche-based and other spatial processes to species occurrence. We found that heterogeneity in microtopography and light availability positively correlated with species richness, in accordance with the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis. However, we recorded different heterogeneity– diversity relationships for particular functional species groups. An increase in the richness of bryophytes and woody plant species was generally related to habitat heterogeneity at all measured spatial scales, whereas a low impact on herbaceous species richness was recorded only at the 11.4 m scale. The distribution of herbaceous plants was primarily explained by other spatial processes, such as dispersal, in contrast to the occurrence of bryophytes, which was better explained by environmental factors. Our results suggest that both niche-based and other spatial processes are important determinants of the plant composition and species turnover at local spatial scales in swamp forests.

[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This study estimated leaf area index (LAI) of individual urban trees as a function of spectral features derived from airborne hyperspectral data. Candidate features included spectral indexes, principal components, and calibrated reflectance values. Hyperspectral images were acquired over Provo, Utah area, and LAI of 204 deciduous trees was measured in the field. These tree canopies were identified on the images, and spectral features were extracted using both whole canopy and mean-lit spectra techniques. Multiple regression and artificial neural networks were used to model leaf area and determine which spectral features were most strongly related to it. Results established that simple hyperspectral vegetation indexes explained more variation in urban tree LAI than either principal component scores or simple band reflectance values. The neural network model trained with a subset of those indexes explained more variation in LAI (R2 = 64.8 percent) than any of the multiple regression models tested. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Urban tree canopy cover is often mapped by classifying high-resolution multispectral imagery. However, it can be difficult to differentiate low-lying vegetation from tree cover using optical data alone. Combining a lidar-derived Normalized Digital Surface Model (ndsm) improves classification accuracy, but the optical imagery is often imperfectly aligned with the NDSM. Aerial imagery is normally orthorectified using the ground elevation. However, tall objects in the orthorectified imagery still suffer from relief displacement. This can cause classification errors when lidar and the aerial imagery are combined. This study presents an approach for urban tree cover mapping composed of two parts: a method for correcting the relief displacement of trees in previously orthorectified aerial imagery, and an object-based classification method which combines relief-corrected multispectral aerial imagery with a lidar-derived NDSM. Using these methods, the tree cover was mapped for a 1,600 ha region of London, Ontario, Canada with improved positional and classification accuracy.
