[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate and repeatable mapping of biological plant invasions is essential to develop successful management strategies for conserving native biodiversity. While overstory invasive plants have been successfully detected and mapped using multiple methods, understory invasive detection remains a challenge, particularly in dense forested environments. Very few studies have utilized an approach that identifies and aligns the acquisition timing of remote sensing imagery with peak phenological differences between understory and overstory vegetation types. We investigated this opportunity by analyzing a monthly time-series of 2011 Landsat TM data to identify acquisition periods with the highest phenological differences between understory and overstory vegetation for detecting the spatial distribution of the exotic understory plant Ligustrum sinense Lour., a rapidly spreading invader in urbanizing regions of the southeastern United States. We used vegetation indices (VI) to establish intra-annual phenological trends for L. sinense, evergreen forest, and deciduous forest located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA. We developed Random Forest (RF) models to detect L. sinense from those time steps exhibiting the highest phenological differences. We assessed the relative contribution of VI and topographic indices (TI) to the detection of L. sinense. We compared the top performing models and used the best overall model to produce a map of L. sinense for the study area. RF models that included VI, TI, and Landsat TM bands for March 13 and 29, 2011 (the periods with highest detected phenological differences), produced the highest overall accuracy and Kappa estimates, outperforming the combination of VI and TI by 8.5% in accuracy and 20.5% in Kappa. The top performing model from the RF produced a Kappa of 0.75. Our findings suggest that selecting remote sensing data for a period when phenological differences between L. sinense and forest types are at their peak can improve the detection and mapping of L. sinense. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) The growth of high-latitude temperature-limited boreal forest ecosystems is projected to become more constrained by soil water availability with continued warming. The purpose of this study was to document ongoing shifts in tree growth sensitivity to the evolving local climate in unmanaged black spruce (Picea mariana (Miller) B.S.P.) forests of eastern boreal North America (49°N–52°N, 58°W–82°W) using a comparative study of field and modeled data. We investigated growth relationships to climate (gridded monthly data) from observed (50 site tree-ring width chronologies) and simulated growth data (stand-level forest growth model) over 1908–2013. No clear strengthening of moisture control over tree growth in recent decades was detected. Despite climate warming, photosynthesis (main driver of the forest growth model) and xylem production (main driver of radial growth) have remained temperature-limited. Analyses revealed, however, a weakening of the influence of growing season temperature on growth during the mid- to late twentieth century in the observed data, particularly in high-latitude (> 51.5°N) mountainous sites. This shift was absent from simulated data, which resulted in clear model-data desynchronization. Thorough investigations revealed that desynchronization was mostly linked to the quality of climate data, with precipitation data being of particular concern. The scarce network of weather stations over eastern boreal North America (> 51.5°N) affects the accuracy of estimated local climate variability and critically limits our ability to detect climate change effects on high-latitude ecosystems, especially at high altitudinal sites. Climate estimates from remote sensing could help address some of these issues in the future. The increasing availability of high density ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning) point clouds offers the opportunity to segment the individual tree crowns and deduce their geometric properties with a high level of accuracy. Top-down segmentation methods such as normalized cut are established approaches for delineation of single trees in ALS point clouds. However, overlapping crowns and branches of nearby trees frequently cause over- and under-segmentation due to the difficulty of defining a single criterion for stopping the partitioning process. In this work, we investigate an adaptive stopping criterion based on the visual appearance of trees within the point clouds. We focus on coniferous trees due to their well-defined crown shapes in comparison to deciduous trees. This approach is based on modeling the coniferous tree crowns with elliptic paraboloids to infer whether a given 3D scene contains exactly one or more than one tree. For each processed scene, candidate tree peaks are generated from local maxima found within the point cloud. Next, paraboloids are fitted at the peaks using a random sample consensus procedure and classified based on their geometric properties. The decision to stop or continue partitioning is determined by finding a set of non-overlapping paraboloids. Experiments were performed on three plots from the Bavarian Forest National Park in Germany. Based on validation data from the field inventory, results show that our approach improves the segmentation quality by up to 10% across plots with different properties, such as average tree height and density. This indicates that the new adaptive stopping criterion for normalized cut segmentation is capable of delineating tree crowns more accurately than a static stopping criterion based on a constant Ncut threshold value. This study applied a Genetic Programming technique called Brain Programming (BP) for automating the design of Hyperspectral Visual Attention Models (H-VAM.), which is proposed as a new method for the detection of buried remains. Four graves were simulated and monitored during six months by taking in situ spectral measurements of the ground. Two experiments were implemented using Kappa and weighted Kappa coefficients as classification accuracy measures for guiding the BP search of the best H-VAM. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed BP method improves classification accuracy compared to a previous approach. A better detection performance was observed for the image acquired after three months from burial. Moreover, results suggest that the use of spectral bands that respond to vegetation and water content of the plants and provide evidence that the number of buried bodies plays a crucial role on a successful detection. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Editeur) Extraction of leaf area index (LAI) is an important prerequisite in numerous studies related to plant ecology, physiology and breeding. LAI is indicative for the performance of a plant canopy and of its potential for growth and yield. In this study, a novel method to estimate LAI based on RGB images taken by an unmanned aerial system (UAS) is introduced. Soybean was taken as the model crop of investigation. The method integrates viewing geometry information in an approach related to gap fraction theory. A 3-D simulation of virtual canopies helped developing and verifying the underlying model. In addition, the method includes techniques to extract plot based data from individual oblique images using image projection, as well as image segmentation applying an active learning approach. Data from a soybean field experiment were used to validate the method. The thereby measured LAI prediction accuracy was comparable with the one of a gap fraction-based handheld device ( of , RMSE of m 2m−2) and correlated well with destructive LAI measurements ( of , RMSE of m2 m−2). These results indicate that, if respecting the range (LAI ) the method was tested for, extracting LAI from UAS derived RGB images using viewing geometry information represents a valid alternative to destructive and optical handheld device LAI measurements in soybean. Thereby, we open the door for automated, high-throughput assessment of LAI in plant and crop science.
