[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) When stumps on clear cuts are harvested for bioenergy, retention of a share of them is recommended to mitigate environmental issues. To maximise benefits for the diversity of saproxylic beetles, retention should be done in dry positions. Saproxylic dipterans are usually thought to be associated with wetter wood substrates. We therefore hypothesised that dipterans would benefit from other recommendations. We tested that by rearing out insects from spruce and birch stumps sampled in clear fellings, and received a material of 866 individuals of 24 Diptera taxa. Among six Diptera species tested statistically, one was associated with dry stumps when comparing within spruce, and the total abundance of dipterans was higher in dry spruce stumps than in wet. No parameter (total species number, species number per stump, total abundances and abundances of individual species) showed a higher value for wet stumps than for dry. We conclude that there are several Diptera species that frequently use stumps, of which a large share was earlier regarded as very rare. For those, our hypothesis was falsified, as the affinities to dry stumps seem similar as for beetles and the same recommendations could be used. [Termes IGN] régression multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Grassland degradation has accelerated in recent decades in response to increased climate variability and human activity. Rangeland and grassland conditions directly affect forage quality, livestock production, and regional grassland resources. In this study, we examined the potential of integrating synthetic aperture radar (SAR, Sentinel-1) and optical remote sensing (Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2) data to monitor the conditions of a native pasture and an introduced pasture in Oklahoma, USA. Leaf area index (LAI) and aboveground biomass (AGB) were used as indicators of pasture conditions under varying climate and human activities. We estimated the seasonal dynamics of LAI and AGB using Sentinel-1 (S1), Landsat-8 (LC8), and Sentinel-2 (S2) data, both individually and integrally, applying three widely used algorithms: Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF). Results indicated that integration of LC8 and S2 data provided sufficient data to capture the seasonal dynamics of grasslands at a 10–30-m spatial resolution and improved assessments of critical phenology stages in both pluvial and dry years. The satellite-based LAI and AGB models developed from ground measurements in 2015 reasonably predicted the seasonal dynamics and spatial heterogeneity of LAI and AGB in 2016. By comparison, the integration of S1, LC8, and S2 has the potential to improve the estimation of LAI and AGB more than 30% relative to the performance of S1 at low vegetation cover (LAI 2 m2/m2, AGB > 500 g/m2). These results demonstrate the potential of combining S1, LC8, and S2 monitoring grazing tallgrass prairie to provide timely and accurate data for grassland management. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (auteur) The monitoring of sugarcane areas is important for sustainable planning and management of the sugarcane industry in Brazil. We developed an operational Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) classification scheme, with generalized space-time classifier, for mapping sugarcane areas at the regional scale in São Paulo State (SP). Binary random forest (RF) classification models were calibrated using multi-temporal data from Landsat images, at 10 sites located across SP. Space and time generalization were tested and compared for three approaches: a local calibration and application; a cross-site spatial generalization test with the RF model calibrated on a site and applied on other sites; and a unique space–time classifier calibrated with all sites together on years 2009–2014 and applied to the entire SP region on 2015. The local RF models Dice Coefficient (DC) accuracies at sites 1 to 8 were between 0.83 and 0.92 with an average of 0.89. The cross-site classification accuracy showed an average DC of 0.85, and the unique RF model had a DC of 0.89 when compared with a reference map of 2015. The results demonstrated a good relationship between sugarcane prediction and the reference map for each municipality in SP, with R² = 0.99 and only 5.8% error for the total sugarcane area in SP, and compared with the area inventory from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, with R² = 0.95 and –1% error for the total sugarcane area in SP. The final unique RF model allowed monitoring sugarcane plantations at the regional scale on independent year, with efficiency, low-cost, limited resources and a precision approximating that of a photointerpretation. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Multisource forest inventory methods were developed to improve the precision of national forest inventory estimates. These methods rely on the combination of inventory data and auxiliary information correlated with forest attributes of interest. As these methods have been predominantly tested over coniferous forests, the present study used this approach for heterogeneous and complex deciduous forests in the center of France. The auxiliary data considered included a forest type map, Landsat 8 spectral bands and derived vegetation indexes, and 3D variables derived from photogrammetric canopy height models. On a subset area, changes in canopy height estimated from two successive photogrammetric models were also used. A model-assisted inference framework, using a k nearest-neighbors approach, was used to predict 11 field inventory variables simultaneously. The results showed that among the auxiliary variables tested, 3D metrics improved the precision of dendrometric estimates more than other auxiliary variables. Relative efficiencies (RE) varying from 2.15 for volume to 1.04 for stand density were obtained using all auxiliary variables. Canopy height changes also increased RE from 3% to 26%. Our results confirmed the importance of 3D metrics as auxiliary variables and demonstrated the value of canopy change variables for increasing the precision of estimates of forest structural attributes such as density and quadratic mean diameter. [Termes IGN] planification côtièreRésumé : (auteur) Coastal habitats provide a plethora of ecosystem services, yet they undergo continuous pressure and degradation due to the human-induced climate change. Conservation and management imply continuous monitoring and mapping of their spatial distribution at first. The present study explores the capabilities of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission and the contribution of its coastal aerosol band 1 (443 nm) for the mapping of the dominant Mediterranean coastal marine habitats and the bathymetry in three survey sites in the East Mediterranean. The selected sites have shallow to deep habitats and a high variability of oceanographic and seabed morphological conditions. The major findings of our study demonstrate the advantages of the downscaled Sentinel-2 coastal aerosol band 1 for both optically shallow habitat and satellite-derived bathymetry mapping due to its great water penetration. The use of Sentinel-2 band 1 allows detection of Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds down to 32.2 m of depth. Sentinel-2 constellation with its 10-m spatial resolution at most of the spectral bands, 5-day revisit frequency and open data policy can be an important tool to provide crucial missing information on the spatial distribution of coastal habitats and on their bathymetry distribution, especially in data-poor and/or remote areas with large gaps in a retrospective, rapid and non-intrusive manner. As such, it becomes a crucial ally for the conservation and management of coastal habitats globally.
