[Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) A numerical simulator of satellite microwave radiometric observations of mountainous scenes, developed in a previous study, has been used to predict the relief effects on the measurements of a spaceborne radiometer. For this purpose, the trends of the error due to topography, i.e., the difference between the antenna temperature calculated for a topographically variable surface and that computed for a flat terrain versus the parameters representing the relief, have been analyzed. The analysis has been mainly performed for a mountainous area in the Alps by assuming a simplified land-cover scenario consisting of bare terrain with two roughness conditions (smooth and rough soils) and considering L- and C-bands, i.e., those most suitable for soil moisture retrieval. The results have revealed that the error in satellite microwave radiometric observations is particularly correlated to the mean values of the height and slope of the radiometric pixel, as well as to the standard deviations of the aspect angle and local incidence angle. Both a regression analysis and a neural-network approach have been applied to estimate the error as a function of the parameters representing the relief, using the simulator to build training and test sets. The prediction of the topography effects and their correction in radiometric images have turned out to be feasible, at least for the scenarios considered in this study. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Water vapor is a key variable in numerical weather prediction, as it plays an important role in atmospheric processes. Nonetheless, the distribution of water vapor in the atmosphere is observed with a coarse resolution in time and space compared to the resolution of numerical weather models. GPS water vapor tomography is one of the promising methods to improve the resolution of water vapor measurements. This paper presents new parameterized approaches for the determination of water vapor distribution in the troposphere by GPS. We present the methods and give first results validating the approaches. The parameterization of voxels (volumetric pixels) by trilinear and spline functions in ellipsoidal coordinates are introduced in this study. The evolution in time of the refractivity field is modeled by a Kalman filter with a temporal resolution of 30s, which corresponds to the available GPS-data rate. The algorithms are tested with simulated and with real data from more than 40 permanent GPS receiver stations in Switzerland and adjoining regions covering alpine areas. The investigations show the potential of the new parameterized approaches to yield superior results compared to the non parametric classical one. The accuracy of the tomographic result is quantified by the inter-quartile range (IQR), which is decreased by 10–20% with the new approaches. Further, parameterized voxel solutions have a substantially smaller maximal error than the non parameterized ones. Simulations show a limited ability to resolve vertical structures above the top station of the network with GPS tomography. [Termes IGN] UltraCamRésumé : (Auteur) Microsoft’s Global Ortho (GO) project aims to capture the entire continental United States and Western Europe at a spatial resolution of 30 centimetres, using UltraCamG digital aerial cameras. The GO project produced the first imagery in August 2010 and has to date captured 46% of the area and published 2.21km2. The entire project is scheduled for completion by June 2012, to be followed by a three-year refresh cycle. The author discusses the GO project, as well as features of the UltraCamG and the new UltraCam Eagle digital aerial cameras. The latter was launched as a commercial offering in May 2011. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Significant changes in the wealth, variety and level of graphic form of city maps are noticeable in recent years, particularly those from Central and Eastern European countries. This is a consequence of the political and economic transformation, resulting in the abolition of censorship and introduction of the free market. Such transformations have also brought significant changes to the city maps’ content, notably, features whose representation had been forbidden could finally be represented. City maps published in Western Europe have evolved as well during the aforementioned period due to higher political and economic stability. The paper compares city maps content of 21 European countries. Differences in the cartographic representation of Western and Central and Eastern European cities are distinct. The influence of a S oviet cartographic style is easily visible in post-communist countries. This is expressed, among other things, by the presentation of detailed content and the considerable amount of point symbols. By contrast, the content demonstrated in Western European city maps is narrower. Taking into account importance of city maps among other cartographic products it seems surprising, that there are no analyses, which could help in finding answers to the following questions: which factors have considerable influence on differentiating the content of the European city maps? Which objects and characteristics are common for each city maps? Do city maps reflect character of the presented city, or there are no important regional differences?
