Instrument performance was validated and carefully monitored through a combination of calibration approaches : solar, lunar, earth (vicarious) and atmospheric observations complemented by onboard calibration lamps and extensive pre-launch calibration. Innovative techniques for spectral calibration of space-based sensors were also tested and validated. Instrument performance met or exceeded predictions including continued operation well beyond the planned one year program. It was launched from Vandenburg Air Force Base on November 21, 2000. The EO-1 satellite contains three observing instruments supported by a variety of newly developed space technologies. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) is a prototype for a new generation of Landsat-7 Thematic Mapper. The Hyperion Imaging Spectrometer is the first high spatial resolution imaging spectrometer to orbit the earth. The Linear Etalon Imaging Spectral Array (LEISA) Atmospheric corrector (LAC) is a high spectral resolution wedge imaging spectrometer designed to measure atmospheric water vapor content. Instrument performances are validated and carefully monitored through a combination of radiometric calibration approaches : solar. lunar, stellar, earth (vicarious), and atmospheric observations complemented by onboard calibration lamps and extensive prelaunch calibration. Techniques for spectral calibration of spacebased sensors have been tested and validated with Hyperion. ALI and Hyperion instrument performance continue to meet at exceed predictions well beyond the planned oneyear program. This paper reviews the EO-1 satellite system and provides details of the instruments and their performance as measured during the first year of operation. Calibration techniques and tradeoffs between alternative approaches are discussed. An overview of the science applications for instrument performance assessment is presented. [Termes IGN] qualité des eauxRésumé : (Auteur) The applicability of image calibration to likevalues in mapping water quality parameters from multitemporal images is explored. Six sets of water samples were collected at satellite overpasses over Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Australia. Analysis of these samples reveals that waters in this shallow bay are mostly TSS dominated, even though they are occasionally dominated by chlorophyll as well. Three of the images were calibrated to a reference image based on invariant targets. Predictive models constructed from the reference image were applied to estimating total suspended sediment (TSS) and Secchi depth from another image at a discrepancy of around 35 percent. Application of the predictive model for TSS concentration to another image acquired at a time of different water types resulted in a discrepancy of 152 percent. Therefore, image calibration to likevalues could be used to reliably map certain water quality parameters from multitemporal TM images so long as the water type under study remains unchanged. This method is limited in that the mapped results could be rather inaccurate if the water type under study has changed considerably. Thus, the approach needs to be refined in shallow water from multitemporal satellite imagery. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper revisits the basic mathematical formulation of orthoimage (digital orthophoto) generation. The main objective is to provide an approach for predicting the accuracy of an orthoimage, according to the accuracy of the digital elevation model (DEM), control points and image measurements, the configuration of fiducial, tie and control points, and the ground slope. The approach is based on applying the wellknown law of error propagation to the mathematical model of orthoimage generation. Although it may seem intuitive for professionals in the field of photogrammetry, such an approach is essential in the era when specialists in other fields use offtheshelf software packages for orthoimage generation. Simulations with the derived approach show that the accuracy of the orthoimage is more sensitive to errors in image measurement of fiducial, tie and control points and ground coordinates of control points, than to DEM errors. Nonstandard configurations of fiducial, tie and control points further impair the accuracy. In addition, certain combinations of point location and ground slope might lead to unacceptably large error on the orthoimage.
