[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Knowledge of forest biomass is an essential parameter for managing the forest in a sustainable way, as forest biomass data availability and reliability are necessary for forestry and forest planning, but also for the carbon market as well as to support the local economy in the mountain and inner areas. However, the accurate quantification of the above-ground biomass (AGB) is still a challenge both at the local and global levels. The use of remote sensing techniques with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms can be an excellent trade-off between resolution, scale, and frequency data of AGB estimation. In this study, we evaluated the combined use of RGB images from UAV, LiDAR data and ground truth data to estimate AGB in a forested watershed in Southern Italy. A low-cost AGB estimation method was adopted using a commercial fixed-wing drone equipped with an RGB camera, combined with the canopy information derived by LiDAR and validated by field data. Two modelling methods (stepwise regression, SR and random forest, RF) were used to estimate forest AGB. The output was an accurate maps of AGB for each model. The RF model showed better accuracy than the Steplm model, and the R2 increased from 0.81 to 0.86, and the RMSE and MAE values were decreased from 45.5 to 31.7 Mg ha-1 and from 34.2 to 22.1 Mg ha-1 respectively. We demonstrated that by increasing the computing efficiency through a machine learning algorithm, readily available images can be used to obtain satisfactory results, as proven by the accuracy of the Random forest above biomass estimation model. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) In front of climate change scenarios and global loss of biodiversity, it is essential to monitor the structure of old-growth forests to study ecosystem status and dynamics to inform future conservation and restoration programmes. We propose an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based framework to monitor fine-grained forest top canopy structure in a primary old-growth beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest in Pollino National Park, Italy, which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage (UNESCO WH) serial site “Ancient and Primeval beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe”. Canopy profile, gap properties and their spatial distribution patterns were analysed using the canopy height model (CHM) derived from UAV surveys. Very high-resolution orthomosaic images coupled with direct field measurement data were used to assess gap detection accuracy and CHM validation. Forest canopy properties along with the vertical layering of the canopy were further explored using second-order statistics. The reconstructed canopy profile revealed a bimodal top height frequency distribution. The upper canopy layer (h > 14 m) was the most represented canopy height, with the remaining 50% split between the medium and lowest layer; 551 gaps were identified within 11.5 ha. Gap size varied between 2 m2 and 353 m2, and 19 m2was the mean gap size; the gap size-frequency relationship reflected a power-law probability distribution. Pinus laricio is the most representative and widespread conifer species in Calabria, South Italy, and appropriate management is needed to maintain Pinus laricio forest for its great economic and natural value. In Europe, thinning is considered the most effective silvicultural treatment to maintain/increase the ecological value of coniferous stands. In this study, moderate thinning (MT), intense thinning (HT), and clear cut (CC) treatments were used to manage Pinus laricio stands with the aim of identifying the thinning intensity that is less detrimental to soil biodiversity. The effects of the different thinning intensities were evaluated, in two contrasting seasons (summer and winter), on the abundance, and diversity of arthropods, fungi, and bacteria colonies as well as on selected soil properties (organic matter, humification index, bulk density, pH) related to soil habitability. Results evidenced that the abundance, species richness, and diversity of arthropods, as well as fungi, bacteria colonies, and soil properties, changed with the treatments and seasons. Under HT, the greatest biodiversity and the highest amounts of arthropods, fungi, and bacteria were found in both seasons. This study finds evidence for Connell’s intermediate disturbance hypothesis, highlighting that the greatest organic carbon content and humification index, as well as the lowest bulk density, found in HT reduced the likelihood of competitive exclusion between occurring species, thereby promoting high species richness and diversity. This study gives insights into ecological relationships between understory composition related to tree species abundance and soil community. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) For years, the Laboratory of Geomatics of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria has undertaken an interdisciplinary project for the recovery and dissemination of information regarding the cultural-artistic and archeological heritage of the metropolitan area. The combined use of geomatics technologies (laser scanners, GPS positioning, digital photogrammetry, remote sensing, GPR) allows on the one hand to investigate objects and artifacts, providing metric, form, and location information; and on the other, to catalog information and make it accessible to the community. Indeed, the digitalization and reconstruction tools of 3D models can be the answer to the limits related to communicability in the archeological sector. Precision, detail, and very accurate photo-realistic reconstructions are particularly useful for virtual and augmented reality applications, integrating them in the devices used on a daily basis. The present note concerns, therefore, the acquisition of information using the point cloud from UAVs and laser scanners, the subsequent 3D modeling, and their representation in an augmented reality (AR) environment using mobile platforms. The application was tested on the church of Sant’Antonio Abate, located in the North of Reggio Calabria, which according to studies is the only evidence of medieval architecture in the territory of Reggio Calabria.
