[Termes IGN] variation de densitéRésumé : (Auteur) Planetary wave activity in the ozone layer was analysed using the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) satellite total ozone measurements. The area under study is southern latitude 65°S, the closest to the location of the Vernadsky station (65°15'S, 64°W). The time-longitude variations in the total ozone during August-December 1979-2003 are presented. The five-month average distributions of the total ozone along the latitude circle of 65°S show the steady features of quasi-stationary zonal distribution caused by superposition of the total wave numbers. The structure of wave number 1 is dominant. Interannual variations and long-term trends of the total wave number amplitude and longitudinal position of the wave ridge (high ozone) and trough (low ozone) are described. Due to the wave amplitude increase the difference between low and high ozone in the opposite longitudinal sectors reached ca 30% in the early 2000s. During 1979-2003 the wave ridge position was relatively stable with the mean longitude of 152 + 15° E; however, the wave trough position drifted eastward from 55°W to the Greenwich meridian with the mean velocity of the long-term drift of 23.6+7.2° per decade. Deviation of the quasi-stationary wave characteristics relative to the mean tendency took place in 1988 and 2002. [Termes IGN] spectromètreRésumé : (Auteur) ARES (Airborne Reflective/Emissive Spectrometer) is an airborne imaging spectrometer for remote sensing of land surfaces covering the wavelength regions 0.45-2.45 um and 8-13 um with 160 channels. The instrument is being built by Integrated Spectronics, financed by DLR and GFZ, and will be available to the scientific community from 2005 on. This contribution presents the design of the thermal spectrometer covering the 8-13 um region with 32 channels of 150 nm bandwidth while a separate paper treats the instrument specifications in the solar reflective region. The spectroradiometric design is based on scientific requirements derived from application scenarios comprising vegetation, soils of different compositions, and mineral exploration. The corresponding emissivity spectra are input for a simulation model that calculates at-sensor radiance spectra, resamples them with the channel-specific response functions, adds different amounts of sensor noise to the signal, and performs a retrieval to get the corresponding noisy surface emissivity spectra. The results of the simulation study indicate that a spectral wavelength accuracy of 3 nm and a sensor noise equivalent temperature of 0.05 - 0.1K are required for an accurate retrieval of emissivity spectra. [Termes IGN] orientation du capteurRésumé : (Auteur) The demand for higher quality metric products from high-resolution satellite imagery (HRSI) is growing, and the number HRSI sensors and product options is increasing. There is a greater need to fully understand the potential and indeed shortcomings of alternative photogrammetric sensor orientation models for HRSI. To date, rational functions have proven to be a viable alternative model for geo-positioning, and with the recent innovation of bias-compensated RPC bundle-adjustment, it has been demonstrated that sensor orientation to subpixel level can be achieved with minimal ground-control. Questions have lingered, however, as to the general suitability of bias-compensated rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs), and indeed rational functions in general. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the wide applicability of bias-compensated RPCs for high accuracy geopositioning from stereo HRSI. The case of stereo imagery over mountainous, terrain will be specifically addressed, and results of experimental testing of both Ikonos and QuickBird imagery will be presented. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) The cameras commonly used for Earth observation from satellites require high attitude stability during the image acquisition. For some types of cameras (high-resolution 'pushbroom' scanners in particular), instantaneous attitude changes of even less than one arcsecond result in significant image distortion and blurring. Especially problematic are the effects of high-frequency attitude variations originating from micro-shocks and vibrations produced by the momentum and reaction wheels, mechanically activated coolers, and steering and deployment mechanisms on board. The resulting high attitude-stability requirements for Earth-observation satellites are one of the main reasons for their complexity and high cost. The novel SmartScan imaging concept, based on an opto-electronic system with no moving parts, offers the promise of high-quality imaging with only moderate satellite attitude stability. SmartScan uses real-time recording of the actual image motion in the focal plane of the camera during frame acquisition to correct the distortions in the image. Exceptional real-time performances with subpixel-accuracy image-motion measurement are provided by an innovative high-speed onboard opto-electronic correlation processor. SmartScan will therefore allow pushbroom scanners to be used for hyperspectral imaging from satellites and other space platforms not primarily intended for imaging missions, such as micro- and nano-satellites with simplified attitude control, low-orbiting communications satellites, and manned space stations.
