[Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) The goal of the work was to estimate, quantitatively, vegetation state and productivity using AVHRR based Vegetation Condition Index (VCI). The VCI algorithm includes application of postlaunch calibration to visible channels, calculation of NDVI from channels' reflectance, removal of high frequency noise from NDVI's annual time series, stratification of ecosystem resources, and separation of ecosystem and weather components in the NDVI value. The weather component was calculated by normalizing the NDVI to the difference of the extreme NDVI fluctuations (maximum and minimum), derived from multiyear data for each week and land pixel. The VCI was compared with wheat density measured in Kazakhstan. Six test fields were located in different climatic (annual precipitation 150 to 700 mm) and ecological (semi desert to steppe forest) zones with elevations from 200 to 700 m and a wide range of NDVI variation over space and season from 0.05 to 0.47. Plant density (PD) was measured in wheat fields by calculating the number of stems per unit area. PD deviation from year to year (PDD) was expressed as a deviation from median density calculated from multiyear data. The correlation between PDD and VCI all stations was positive and quite strong (r2 > 0.75) with the Standard Errors of Estimates (SEE) of PDD less than 16 percent ; for individual stations, the SEE was less than 11 percent. The results indicate that VCI is an appropriate index for monitoring weather impact on vegetation and for assessment of pasture and crop productivity in Kazakhstan. Because satellite observations provide better spatial and temporal coverage, the VCI based system will provide efficient tools for management of water resources and the improvement of agricultural planning. This system will serve as a prototype in the other parts of the world where ground observations are limited or not available. [Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) The design, characteristics, and operation of the Helsinki University of Technology Fully Polarimetric Radiometer (FPoR) are described. The developed 36.5-GHz radiometer can be used for airborne remote sensing ; however, ground-based and laboratory measurements are also possible. A direct crosscorrelation technique with analog correlators, which measures all four Stokes parameters simultaneously, is applied. This paper is the first successful demonstration of an analog direct crosscorrelation technique for polarimetric remote sensing radiometry. The radiometer was subjected to a variety of laboratory tests, and considerable attention is given to analysis of the characteristics of the instrument. Owing to the effective active temperature control system of the receiver, the radiometric stability of the instrument was found to be very high ; test results showing stabilities below 10 mK and of 440 mK on time scales of 800 and 8000 s, respectively, are presented. Furthermore, the absolute accuracy of the system is analyzed to be at a sub-Kelvin level for most measurement conditions. A maritime wind vector experiment was carried out over the Gulf of Finland. The feasibility and performance of the applied correlation technique and the whole radiometer system were verified for fully polarimetric airborne measurements. The obtained brightness temperatures of the first three Stokes parameters show typical harmonic behavior with respect to the surface wind ; the results suggest, however, that the model coefficients presented earlier for oceans may not be directly applicable for different conditions. [Termes IGN] spectrographeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a CCD (charge coupled device) camerabased hyperspectral imaging system designed for both stationary and airborne remote sensing applications. The system consists of a high performance digital CCD camera, an imaging spectrograph, an optional focal plane scanner, and a PC computer equipped with a frame grabbing board and camera utility software. The CCD camera provides 1280(h) x 1024(v) pixel resolution and true 12bit dynamic range. The imaging spectrograph is attached to the camera via an adapter to disperse radiation into a range of spectral bands. The effective spectral range resulting from this integration is from 457.2 nm to 921.7 nm. The optional focal plane scanner can be attached to the front of the spectrograph via another adapter for stationary image acquisition. The camera and the frame grabbing board are connected via a double coaxial cable, and the utility software allows for complete camera control and image acquisition. The imaging system captures one line image for all the bands at a time and an aircraft or the focal plane scanner serves as a mobile platform to carrv out push broom scanning in the alongtrack direction. The horizontal and vertical binning capability of the camera makes it possible to obtain images with various spatial (160, 320, 640 and 1280 pixels in image width) and spectral (32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and 1024 bands) resolutions. Formulas are presented to show the relationships among binning factors, spatial resolutions, and flight height and speed. Images with all 24 possible combinations of binning factors were collected in a laboratory setting. Airborne images with 128 bands and a width of 640 pixels were also obtained from agricultural fields, rangelands and waterways. Procedures were developed to correct geometric distortions of the airborne hyperspectral imagery. Preliminary image acquisition testing trials indicate that this CCD camerabased hyperspectral imaging system has potential for agricultural and natural resources applications. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Landsat program has been dedicated to sustaining data continuity over the 20-year period during which Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced TM Plus (ETM+) sensors have been acquiring images of the earth's surface. In 2000, NASA launched the Earth Observing1 (EO1) Advanced Land Imager (ALI) to test new technology that could improve the TM/ETM+ sensor series, yet ensure Landsat data continuity. The study reported here quantified the continuity of satelliteretrieved surface reflectance () for the three most recent Landsat sensors (Landsat-4 TM, Landsat-5 TM, and Landsat-7 ETM+) and the EO-1 ALI sensor. The study was based on grounddata verification and, in the case of the ETM+ to ALI comparison, coincident image analysis. Reflectance retrieved from all four sensors showed good correlation with groundmeasured reflectance, and the sensortosensor data continuity was excellent for all sensors and all bands. A qualitative analysis of the new ALI spectral bands (4p: 0.845-0.890 um and 5p: 1.201.30 um) showed that ALI band 5p provided information that was different from that provided by the ETM+/ALI shortwave infrared bands 5 and 7 for agricultural targets and that ALI band 4p has the advantage over the existing ETM+ nearinfrared (NIR) band 4 and ALI NIR band 4 of being relatively insensitive to water vapor absorption. The. basic conclusion of this study is that the four sensors can provide excellent data continuity for temporal studies of natural resources. Furthermore, the new technologies put forward by the EO1 ALI sensor have had no apparent effect on data continuity and should be considered for the upcoming Landsat8 sensor payload.
