[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Light sensors are increasingly used to monitor vegetation growing status by measuring reflectance or transmittance in multispectral or photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) bands. The measurements are then used to estimate vegetation indices or the fraction of absorbed PAR (FPAR) in a continuous and long-term manner and to serve as inputs to environmental monitoring and calibration/validation data for satellite remote sensing. However, light-sensor calibration is often overlooked or not properly attended to, which leads to difficulties when comparing the measurement results across sites and through time. In this paper, we investigate a practical and accurate user-level in situ calibration method in daylight. The calibration of a sensor pair is made for measuring either bihemispherical reflectance or hemispherical-conical reflectance, which are the two most common ground-based spectral measurements. Procedures and considerations are suggested for user calibration. We also provide a method for calibrating and measuring a single-sensor reflectance-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from red and near-infrared bands. The calibration error propagation is analyzed, and the induced uncertainties in vegetation reflectance and in the NDVI are evaluated. The analysis and field measurements show that the NDVI estimated from a user calibration factor can be as accurate as, or even more accurate than, the manufacturer's calibration. The in situ calibration described here remedies the situation where reflectance for large field-of-view sensors cannot be always estimated from the manufacturer's calibration. The method developed in this paper may help improve the reliability of long-term field spectral measurements and contributes to the near-surface remote sensing of vegetation. [Termes IGN] surveillance du littoralRésumé : (auteur) Coastal areas suffer degradation due to the action of the sea and other natural and human-induced causes. Topographical changes in beaches and sand dunes need to be assessed, both after severe events and on a regular basis, to build models that can predict the evolution of these natural environments. This is an important application for airborne LIDAR, and conventional photogrammetry is also being used for regular monitoring programs of sensitive coastal areas. This paper analyses the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to map and monitor sand dunes and beaches. A very light plane (SwingletCam) equipped with a very cheap, non-metric camera was used to acquire images with ground resolutions better than 5 cm. The Agisoft Photoscan software was used to orientate the images, extract point clouds, build a digital surface model and produce orthoimage mosaics. The processing, which includes automatic aerial triangulation with camera calibration and subsequent model generation, was mostly automated. To achieve the best positional accuracy for the whole process, signalised ground control points were surveyed with a differential GPS receiver. Two very sensitive test areas on the Portuguese northwest coast were analysed. Detailed DSMs were obtained with 10 cm grid spacing and vertical accuracy (RMS) ranging from 3.5 to 5.0 cm, which is very similar to the image ground resolution (3.2–4.5 cm). Where possible to assess, the planimetric accuracy of the orthoimage mosaics was found to be subpixel. Within the regular coastal monitoring programme being carried out in the region, UAVs can replace many of the conventional flights, with considerable gains in the cost of the data acquisition and without any loss in the quality of topographic and aerial imagery data. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Hyperspectral imaging relies on sophisticated acquisition and data processing systems able to acquire, process, store, and transmit hundreds or thousands of image bands from a given area of interest. In this paper, we exploit the high correlation existing among the components of the hyperspectral data sets to introduce a new compressive sensing methodology, termed hyperspectral coded aperture (HYCA), which largely reduces the number of measurements necessary to correctly reconstruct the original data. HYCA relies on two central properties of most hyperspectral images, usually termed data cubes: 1) the spectral vectors live on a low-dimensional subspace; and 2) the spectral bands present high correlation in both the spatial and the spectral domain. The former property allows to represent the data vectors using a small number of coordinates. In this paper, we particularly exploit the high spatial correlation mentioned in the latter property, which implies that each coordinate is piecewise smooth and thus compressible using local differences. The measurement matrix computes a small number of random projections for every spectral vector, which is connected with coded aperture schemes. The reconstruction of the data cube is obtained by solving a convex optimization problem containing a data term linked to the measurement matrix and a total variation regularizer. The solution of this optimization problem is obtained by an instance of the alternating direction method of multipliers that decomposes very hard problems into a cyclic sequence of simpler problems. In order to address the need to set up the parameters involved in the HYCA algorithm, we also develop a constrained version of HYCA (C-HYCA), in which all the parameters can be automatically estimated, which is an important aspect for practical application of the algorithm. A series of experiments with simulated and real data shows the effectiveness of HYCA and C-HYCA, indicating their potential in real-world applications. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) The use of multispectral satellite sensors for generation of hyperspectral indices is restricted because of their coarse spectral resolutions. In this study, we attempted to synthesize a few of these hyperspectral indices, viz. RedEdge Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI705), Plant Senescence Reflectance Index (PSRI) and Normalized-Difference-Infrared-Index (NDII), for crop stress monitoring at regional scale using multispectral images, simulated from Hyperion data. The Hyperion data were resampled and simulated to corresponding spatial and spectral resolutions of AWiFS, OCM-2 and MODIS sensors using their respective filter function. Different possible combinations of two bands (i.e. simple difference, simple ratio and normalized difference) were computed using synthetic spectral bands of each sensor, and were regressed with NDVI705, PSRI and NDII. Models with highest correlation were selected and inverted on Hyperion data of another date to synthesize respective multispectral indices. Synthetic broad band indices of multispectral sensors with their respective narrow band indices of Hyperion were found to be in good agreement.
