[Termes IGN] pouvoir de résolution radiométriqueRésumé : (auteur) Soot deposition from wildfires decreases snow and ice albedo and increases the absorption of shortwave radiation, which advances and accelerates melt. Soot deposition also induces algal growth, which further decreases snow and ice albedo. In recent years, increasingly severe and widespread wildfire activity has occurred in western Canada in association with climate change. In the summers of 2017 and 2018, westerly winds transported smoke from extensive record-breaking wildfires in British Columbia eastward to the Canadian Rockies, where substantial amounts of soot were deposited on high mountain glaciers, snowfields, and icefields. Several studies have addressed the problem of soot deposition on snow and ice, but the spatiotemporal resolution applied has not been compatible with studying mountain icefields that are extensive but contain substantial internal variability and have dynamical albedos. This study evaluates spatial patterns in the albedo decrease and net shortwave radiation (K*) increase caused by soot from intense wildfires in Western Canada deposited on the Columbia Icefield (151 km2), Canadian Rockies, during 2017 and 2018. Twelve Sentinel-2 images were used to generate high spatial resolution albedo retrievals during four summers (2017 to 2020) using a MODIS bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model, which was employed to model the snow and ice reflectance anisotropy. Remote sensing estimates were evaluated using site-measured albedo on the icefield's Athabasca Glacier tongue, resulting in a R2, mean bias, and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.68, 0.019, and 0.026, respectively. The biggest inter-annual spatially averaged soot-induced albedo declines were of 0.148 and 0.050 (2018 to 2020) for southeast-facing glaciers and the snow plateau, respectively. The highest inter-annual spatially-averaged soot-induced shortwave radiative forcing was 203 W/m2 for southeast-facing glaciers (2018 to 2020) and 106 W/m2 for the snow plateau (2017 to 2020). These findings indicate that snow albedo responded rapidly to and recovered rapidly from soot deposition. However, ice albedo remained low the year after fire, and this was likely related to a bio-albedo feedback involving microorganisms. Snow and ice K* were highest during low albedo years, especially for south-facing glaciers. These large-scale effects accelerated melt of the Columbia Icefield. The findings highlight the importance of using large-area high spatial resolution albedo estimates to analyze the effect of wildfire soot deposition on snow and ice albedo and K* on icefields, which is not possible using other approaches. [Termes IGN] Vancouver (Colombie britannique)Résumé : (auteur) Understanding changes in salmonid populations and their habitat is a critical issue given changing climate, their importance as a keystone species, and their cultural significance. Terrain features such as slope, gradient, and morphology, as well as forest structure attributes including canopy cover, height, and presence of on ground coarse wood, all influence the quality and quantity of salmonid habitat in forested ecosystems. The increasing availability of Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data for forest applications offers an opportunity to utilize these data for assessing the quality and quantity of habitat, which is often costly and difficult to characterize. ALS data provides detailed and accurate Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) under forest canopies, which in turn enable the characterization of detailed stream networks, as well as stream and terrain attributes important to salmonids. At the Nahmint watershed on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, we sampled six, 200 m long stream reaches, describing a range of terrain and stream features following standard data collection protocols. Our objective in this research was to use ALS data to estimate three attributes from the 3D point cloud and DEM that are known to be important for salmonids, including bankfull width, instream wood and discrete stream morphological units. Results indicate that ALS-based estimates had strong, significant, correlations with field-measured attributes (with Pearson's correlation of 0.80 and 0.81 for bankfull width and instream wood, respectively). Bankfull width was slightly underestimated using the ALS data (Bias = −1.01 m; MAD = 1.89 m; RMSD = 2.05 m) and 80% of instream wood pieces were detected. Using ALS-derived predictors in a Random Forest model, discrete stream morphological units (i.e. pools, riffles, glides, cascades) were classified with an overall accuracy of 85%, with pools having the highest user's class accuracy at 96%. Results presented herein indicate that ALS data can be used to provide a fine scale characterization of stream attributes that are required to identify salmonid habitat, providing critical information for sustainable forest management decision making, and providing a foundation for advanced salmonid habitat modeling. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Urban Densification Suitability Analysis (UDSA) approach has been proposed using the GIS-based Logic Scoring of Preference (LSP) decision method. Our goal is to provide the methodology for the evaluation of suitability of locations for high density urban development to facilitate the spatial decision-making process and help justifiable urban planning. The main objectives of this research study are (1) to implement the GIS-based LSP method for high density urban growth suitability analysis, and (2) to perform an overall integrated suitability analysis for two key stakeholders, urban developer and urban planner. The LSP method is based on soft computing and used in the decision-making process to integrate large number of attribute criteria in a way that is consistent with human logic reasoning. The GIS-based LSP method is implemented using geospatial data for Metro Vancouver Region, Canada. Main criteria used to characterize the urban densification include recreation, transportation, existing development, economy, terrain, restrictions, and demography. The obtained results provide the distributions of suitability values and indicate that the opinions of two stakeholders differ. They select different locations as the most suitable for urban densifications and rather agree on the most unsuitable locations. The overall integrated suitability analysis has been performed with scenarios of possible decision-making outcomes between the two stakeholders. We introduce the concept of suitability agreement maps along with urban densification decision criteria. The analysis indicates that the GIS-based LSP method is a useful tool for measuring the similarities and differences in stakeholders' views and facilitating decision-making process for urban densification. [Termes IGN] Vancouver (Colombie britannique)Résumé : (Auteur) This research study extends the Logic Scoring of Preference (LSP) as a general multicriteria evaluation (MCE) method by presenting and evaluating a new GIS.LSP method and software tool implemented within the geographic information systems (GIS) environment. For the evaluation and validation of the method and software tool, we describe a case study of urban densification suitability analysis using geospatial data for the Metro Vancouver Region, Canada. The criteria, LSP structures, and aggregators groups were developed from the perspective of urban developers who are key stakeholders in the densification process. We compare two group of aggregators and perform sensitivity and cost–suitability analysis of the LSP method by variation of input suitability scores, input attributes, and aggregators. The results indicate the GIS.LSP method is effective in providing a flexible and sensitive workflow to create realistic and justifiable outcomes from complex criteria that are bounded by stakeholders' goals and requirements. [Termes IGN] Vancouver (Colombie britannique)Résumé : (Auteur) Urban densification is often seen as a process that aims to limit the negative environmental impacts of urban sprawl in rapidly growing cities by prioritizing planning policies stimulating vertical growth (or high-rise development) over expansion along the urban fringe. Densification of major Canadian urban areas has led to the proliferation of high-rises with an increasing proportion of residents occupying these buildings rather than traditional individual housing. Thus, there is a need for analytical methods that can evaluate the suitability of different residential units in vertical urban developments based on unique criteria for different stakeholders such as prospective residents, developers, or municipal planners. Multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) analysis with weighted linear combination (WLC) is frequently implemented in geographic information systems (GIS) to identify the appropriate solution(s) for a decision problem. However, there are currently no available MCE methods for spatial analysis that can provide evaluation in a three-dimensional (3D) GIS environment, such as for urban vertical development. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to propose a 3D WLC-MCE suitability analysis method for suitability of high-rise residential units in a dense urban area. Five preference scenarios were developed and applied to data from City of Vancouver, Canada. The results indicate that south-facing units and units on higher floors generally exhibit higher levels of suitability as they are less affected by the noise and pollution of the urban road network and receive more sunlight and ocean views. The proposed 3D MCE approach can be used for urban planning and property tax assessment.
