[Termes IGN] tunnelRésumé : (auteur) This paper introduces an original method for modelling in 3D the full tube (both vault and canal) of navigable tunnels using data acquired dynamically from a boat. The recording system is composed of cameras that provide images of the vault and a multibeam echo sounder that acquires 3D profiles underwater. Reconstructing partially submerged structures, in a confined environment where no global positioning system signal is available, is challenging. The method exploits the capabilities of photogrammetry, not only to reconstruct the tunnel vault, but also to estimate the trajectory of the vessel, which is necessary to rearrange sonar profiles and form the 3D model of the canal. The comparison of a model reconstructed from in situ dynamic acquisitions with a reference one, obtained from static laser and sonar acquisitions, shows that the accuracy is of the order of a centimetre for the vault, while it is decimetric for underwater features. [Termes IGN] Terre-Neuve, île de (Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador)Résumé : (auteur) The scale dependence of benthic terrain attributes is well-accepted, and multi-scale methods are increasingly applied for benthic habitat mapping. There are, however, multiple ways to calculate terrain attributes at multiple scales, and the suitability of these approaches depends on the purpose of the analysis and data characteristics. There are currently few guidelines establishing the appropriateness of multi-scale raster calculation approaches for specific benthic habitat mapping applications. First, we identify three common purposes for calculating terrain attributes at multiple scales for benthic habitat mapping: (i) characterizing scale-specific terrain features, (ii) reducing data artefacts and errors, and (iii) reducing the mischaracterization of ground-truth data due to inaccurate sample positioning. We then define criteria that calculation approaches should fulfill to address these purposes. At two study sites, five raster terrain attributes, including measures of orientation, relative position, terrain variability, slope, and rugosity were calculated at multiple scales using four approaches to compare the suitability of the approaches for these three purposes. Results suggested that specific calculation approaches were better suited to certain tasks. A transferable parameter, termed the ‘analysis distance’, was necessary to compare attributes calculated using different approaches, and we emphasize the utility of such a parameter for facilitating the generalized comparison of terrain attributes across methods, sites, and scales. [Termes IGN] sondeur monofaisceauRésumé : (auteur) Measuring the nearshore bathymetry is critical in coastal management and morphodynamic studies. The recent advent of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in combination with coastal video monitoring techniques, allows for an alternative and low cost evaluation of the nearshore bathymetry. Camera calibration and stabilization is a critical issue in bathymetry estimation from video systems. This work introduces a new methodology in order to obtain such bathymetries, and it compares the results to echo-sounder ground truth data. The goal is to gain a better understanding on the influence of the camera calibration and stabilization on the inferred bathymetry. The results show how the proposed methodology allows for accurate evaluations of the bathymetry, with overall root mean square errors in the order of 40 cm. It is shown that the intrinsic calibration of the camera, related to the lens distortion, is the most critical aspect. Here, the intrinsic calibration that was obtained directly during the flight yields the best results. [Termes IGN] sonarRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) is a sensor that was designed for hydrographic survey of the seabed. It detects small targets, enabling high geometric resolution images. However, the images generated by SAS are susceptible to speckle noise, which makes digital processing difficult, since the noises are confused with the targets of interest. The goal of this study was to develop a semi-automatic routine for SAS image processing to verify the structural integrity of submarine pipelines. The method presented incorporates four stages: pre-processing to reduce noise and highlight the targets of interest; extraction of features aiming to recognize features related to the pipelines; post-processing to reduce the fragmentation generated during feature extraction; validation to quantify the results from the reference images to estimate the performance of the proposed methodology. The results showed that more than 80% of the submarine pipelines were mapped in the semi-automatic mode, which considerably reduced the time needed to manually identify a large number of pipelines operating on offshore oilfields. [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (éditeur) This open access peer-reviewed volume was inspired by the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology International Workshop held at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia in November 2016. Content is based on, but not limited to, the work presented at the workshop which was dedicated to 3D recording and interpretation for maritime archaeology. The volume consists of contributions from leading international experts as well as up-and-coming early career researchers from around the globe. The content of the book includes recording and analysis of maritime archaeology through emerging technologies, including both practical and theoretical contributions. Topics include photogrammetric recording, laser scanning, marine geophysical 3D survey techniques, virtual reality, 3D modelling and reconstruction, data integration and Geographic Information Systems. The principal incentive for this publication is the ongoing rapid shift in the methodologies of maritime archaeology within recent years and a marked increase in the use of 3D and digital approaches. This convergence of digital technologies such as underwater photography and photogrammetry, 3D sonar, 3D virtual reality, and 3D printing has highlighted a pressing need for these new methodologies to be considered together, both in terms of defining the state-of-the-art and for consideration of future directions. As a scholarly publication, the audience for the book includes students and researchers, as well as professionals working in various aspects of archaeology, heritage management, education, museums, and public policy. It will be of special interest to those working in the field of coastal cultural resource management and underwater archaeology but will also be of broader interest to anyone interested in archaeology and to those in other disciplines who are now engaging with 3D recording and visualization.
