[Termes IGN] service web géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping vegetation height over large areas presents a problem of scale: height varies with the individual tree or stand, but the resolution of available datasets is too low to characterize this variability sufficiently for many applications. We address this problem by fusing 1 km resolution canopy height data derived from satellite-based laser altimetry with higher-resolution land-cover data, resulting in 30 m resolution estimates of canopy height. These are downscaled further to 1 m resolution by simulating individual trees. A web service architecture is used, which allows processing to occur on demand without preprocessing large datasets. We compared the resulting canopy volumes to reference airborne lidar data from 262 randomly located 1 km2 areas within nine study sites. Results at 30 m resolution show an RMSE of 33 percent of the mean reference volume and an R2 of 0.77; at 1 m the RMSE is 66 percent and the R2 is 0.38. [Termes IGN] rédaction cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Orienteering is both a mental and physical activity. A compass and maps are the basic tools of orienteering, and orienteering requires specialized maps that have been adapted and standardized to guarantee fair competition. Map-making for orienteering has become a highly specialized cartographic task. This paper aims to answer three main questions: What is an orienteering map (o-map)? How should we categorize o-maps? What are its essential components? The answers to these questions provide insight into the concept and nature of o-maps. By analysing the functions of this type of maps and by searching for similarities and differences between o-maps, topographic maps, and nautical charts, we attempt to comprehensively characterize and conceptualize o-maps to contribute to their improvement. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, we test the potential of two different classification algorithms, namely the spectral angle mapper (SAM) and object-based classifier for mapping the land use/cover characteristics using a Hyperion imagery. We chose a study region that represents a typical Mediterranean setting in terms of landscape structure, composition and heterogeneous land cover classes. Accuracy assessment of the land cover classes was performed based on the error matrix statistics. Validation points were derived from visual interpretation of multispectral high resolution QuickBird-2 satellite imagery. Results from both the classifiers yielded more than 70% classification accuracy. However, the object-based classification clearly outperformed the SAM by 7.91% overall accuracy (OA) and a relatively high kappa coefficient. Similar results were observed in the classification of the individual classes. Our results highlight the potential of hyperspectral remote sensing data as well as object-based classification approach for mapping heterogeneous land use/cover in a typical Mediterranean setting.
