[Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Thematic content in the form of geodata is becoming increasingly available on the web. However, adequate base map information to support appropriate communication of the thematic content is not available in many cases. This base map information might be served through topographic databases available on the web and optimized by means of automated generalization. This article describes an approach based on user profiles, which formally captures the user requirements (preferences) towards the base map and deploys those profiles in a web-based architecture to generate on-demand maps. Those user profiles, which may differ per user, drive the generalization process and produce base maps on demand by taking into account the user requirements as well as the thematic content. The research in this article specifically focuses on the technological environment that generates on-demand base maps incorporating four basic concepts in the user profile: (1) topology awareness between the base map and the thematic content, (2) user-specific base map information at a non-uniform scale to improve the communication of the thematic content, (3) the map specification and (4) inheritance of user profiles. Both existing and new techniques are explored to realize the environment. The approach is evaluated by applying it to a project in the Netherlands dedicated to disseminating physical planning maps through the web. [Termes IGN] spécification de contenuRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we introduce a method for identifying the specific needs of a community from a user survey, and adapting maps accordingly. This method was applied to four different groups of trekkers: walkers, road cyclists, cross-country bikers, and recreational trekkers. Relevant concepts, criticisms and expectations for each group were identified using natural language processing and lexicometry methods and tools. Suggestions for adapting maps focus on data selection and graphic representation. Pedes-trian trails were emphasized using trail-marking signs as graphical symbols and adding numbers which refer to additional information. Specific trails were added to the cross-country hiking map using the difficulty level indi-cation of ski maps. Moreover, contour lines were highlighted for cross-country bikers to help them to understand relief. The road cyclist map was designed at a 1/50 000 scale with generalized data. The slope of cycling paths was indicated by a diverging color scheme to convey the difficulty of different sections of road. This paper describes part of an on-demand map making process and illustrates it for a specific community, trekkers. It has been shown that it is possible to select data and define radical graphic choices as long as the community is targeted enough to have the same needs and wishes. [Termes IGN] web mappingIndex. décimale : 39.00 Cartographie - généralités - Cartologie Résumé : (Auteur) Maps are changing. They have become important and fashionable once more. Rethinking Maps brings together leading researchers to explore how maps are being rethought, made and used, and what these changes mean for working cartographers, applied mapping research, and cartographic scholarship. It offers a contemporary assessment of the diverse forms that mapping now takes and, drawing upon a number of theoretic perspectives and disciplines, provides an insightful commentary on new ontological and epistemological thinking with respect to cartography.
This book presents a diverse set of approaches to a wide range of map forms and activities in what is presently a rapidly changing field. It employs a multi-disciplinary approach to important contemporary mapping practices, with chapters written by leading theorists who have an international reputation for innovative thinking. Much of the new research around mapping is emerging as critical dialogue between practice and theory and this book has chapters focused on intersections with play, race and cinema. Other chapters discuss cartographic representation, sustainable mapping and visual geographies. It also considers how alternative models of map creation and use such as open-source mappings and map mash-up are being creatively explored by programmers, artists and activists. There is also an examination of the work of various ‘everyday mappers’ in diverse social and cultural contexts.
This blend of conceptual chapters and theoretically directed case studies provides an excellent resource suited to a broad spectrum of researchers, advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in human geography, GIScience and cartography, visual anthropology, media studies, graphic design and computer graphics. Rethinking Maps is a necessary and significant text for all those studying or having an interest in cartography.Note de contenu : Preface
