[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A novel approach to color image segmentation (CIS) in scanned archival topographic maps of the 19th century is presented. Archival maps provide unique information for GIS-based change detection and are the only spatially contiguous data sources prior to the establishment of remote sensing. Processing such documents is challenging due to their very low graphical quality caused by ageing, manual production and scanning. Typical artifacts are high degrees of mixed and false coloring, as well as blurring in the images. Existing approaches for segmentation in cartographic documents are normally presented using well-conditioned maps. The CIS approach presented here uses information from the local image plane, the frequency domain and color space. As a first step, iterative clustering is based on local homogeneity, frequency of homogeneity-tested pixels and similarity. By defining a peak-finding rule, “hidden” color layer prototypes can be identified without prior knowledge. Based on these prototypes a constrained seeded region growing (SRG) process is carried out to find connected regions of color layers using color similarity and spatial connectivity. The method was tested on map pages with different graphical properties with robust results as derived from an accuracy assessment. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Cartogram is a technique for visualisation of the geographical distribution of spatial data. It has two main types, i.e. distance cartogram and area cartogram. Area cartogram is a transformed map in which areas are resized in proportion to an attribute value. A number of techniques have been developed for the generation of area cartograms. Some researchers consider cartogram as a very effective technique for visualisation of spatial data, while others doubt about the effectiveness because of the possible distortion in shape and/or disconnectivity in topology. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of area cartogram for visualizing spatial data. In this study, two comparative experiments have been conducted. One is the comparison between thematic maps and cartograms, and the other is the comparison among different types of area cartogram. Two sets of data with different characteristics are used, i.e. 2005 China population data and 1996 US election data. Results show that cartogram is more effective in the representation of the 1996 US election data which provides a qualitative result (i.e. in binary form or nominal data), but thematic map is far more effective in the representation of 2005 China population data which provides a quantitative result (in classes or ordinal data). It is also found that among different types of area cartogram, pseudo-cartogram is the most preferred technique and Darling cartogram is the least preferred one. This book demonstrates how GIS can aid processes and promote transparency by providing a single data source from which to work. Featuring case studies from a range of technical-support structures including electric and gas utilities, public works, and renewable energy, this book is a reference for anyone involved in the infrastructure industry. The maps in are real-world examples from 57 different organizations currently using GIS to effectively examine infrastructure development. Note de contenu : - Broadband

These often magnificent maps, expressing an enormous variety of differing world views, used size and beauty to convey messages of status and power. This book takes the best surviving examples to re-establish manuscript, painted and mural maps as a major cultural medium particularly in early modern Europe by illustrating the settings in which they were displayed and discussing the background and purpose of individual examples. Sourced from one of the greatest map collections in the world, many of these visual delights will be completely new even to experts. Note de contenu : Chapitre 1. The historical background
