[Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) The objectives of this research were: (1) to quantify indicators of riparian condition; and (2) to assess these indicators for detecting change in riparian condition. Two multi-spectral QuickBird images were acquired in 2004 and 2005 for a section of the Daly River in north Australia. These data were collected coincidently with vegetation and geomorphic field data. Indicators of riparian condition, including percentage canopy cover, organic litter, canopy continuity, bank stability, flood damage, riparian zone width and vegetation overhang, were then mapped. Field measurements and vegetation indices were empirically related using regression analysis to develop algorithms for mapping organic litter and canopy cover (R 2 = 0.59-0.78). Using a standard nearest-neighbour algorithm, object-oriented supervised image classification provided thematic information (overall accuracies 81-90%) for mapping riparian zone width and vegetation overhang. Bank stability and flood damage were mapped empirically from a combination of canopy cover information and the image classification products (R 2 = 0.70-0.81). Multi-temporal image analysis of riparian condition indicators (RCIs) demonstrated the advantages of using continuous and discrete data values as opposed to categorical data. This research demonstrates how remote sensing can be used for mapping and monitoring riparian zones in remote tropical savannas and other riparian environments at scales from 1 km to 100s km of stream length. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) was launched in January 2006, and this made it possible for the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) to acquire high-resolution images (2,5 m) from the satellite's sensor PRISM (Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping). It is expected that PRISM will be applied to the mapping and revision of 1:25 000-scale topographic maps. In collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), GSI has finished verifying and demonstrating the feasability of PRISM images for mapping and revision of 1:25 000-scale topographic maps, and has started using the images in its mapping program. This report describes this feasability study and details the actual applications of PRISM images for topographic mapping. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) The design and development of a highly interactive web-based, GIS-enabled atlas is reported. The atlas is a prototype, designed as a model for implementation of atlases to support government cancer-control activities. This model integrates symbolisation and design principles from print cartography, interaction strategies from exploratory geovisualisation, and web-map/web-feature service advances from GIS. The atlas has been implemented using a client-server architecture. It makes use of two open-source GIS tools, PostGIS (as the system database) and GeoServer (to connect the database to the client mapping application). The client mapping application has been built in Macromedia Flash. The entire client-server architecture is described, then direct primary emphasis is focused on the client mapping application. For this component of the system, the interface design strategy is detailed, the approach taken to implement this strategy in Flash is documented, and the mechanisms developed to build dynamic links from the client to the underlying database through the server are outlined. Features of the atlas are presented through a prototypical use scenario for a target user. [Termes IGN] cartographie par internetRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we draw on the analysis of sound in film theory in order to explore the potential that sound offers cybercartography. We first argue that the theoretical body developed in film studies is highly relevant to the study of sound/image relationships in mapmaking. We then build on this argument to develop experimental animated and interactive sound maps for the Cybercartographic Atlas of Antarctica that further explore the potential of sound for integrating emotional, cultural and political dimensions in cartography. These maps have been designed to recreate cinematic soundscapes, to provide contrapuntal perspectives on the cartographic image and to generate an aural identity of the atlas. As part of this experimental mapping, an innovative sound infrastructure is being developed to allow complex sound designs to be transmitted over the Internet as part of atlas content. Through this infrastructure, the user can select as well as contribute his own sounds. The overall cartographic message is becoming less predictable, thus opening new perspectives on the way we design, interact with, and modify sounded maps over the Internet.
