[Termes IGN] représentation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Geologically interested savants of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries described three-dimensional spatial relationships through the visual language of maps and sections of the Earth. At this time, there was a debate whether colour or line should feature in mapping our strata. Colour was an identifying characteristic of Wernerian mineralogy, but the exact manner in which colour should be employed in representing a mineralogical landscape remained controversial. According to the engineer and geologist William Smith (1769–1839), words or symbols, engraved on a map, marred a visual simplicity that accommodated an immediate understanding of the area represented. Colour enabled a quick and rational study of the countryside so that the savant instantly visualized the logic of the landscape. André-Jean-Marie Brochant de Villiers (1792–1857), professor of geology and mineralogy at École des Mines, argued differently. In a letter to Thomas Webster (1773–1844), he remarked on the difficulty of correlating colours in the key with those of strata when studying Greenough's Map of England and Wales (1819). By examining techniques of representation and the use of colour, this paper discusses the importance of aesthetics in the depiction of geological landscape. [Termes IGN] plan-reliefRésumé : (auteur) The goal of this article is to analyse several aspects of the construction of a unique project in cartography: the three-dimensional model of the city of Cadiz constructed between 1777 and 1779. Cadiz was the most important fortification in Spain at the time. We focus on new investigations of the two documentary sources relating to the construction of this maquette, or relief map, which hitherto have not been studied in conjunction. This approach facilitates an elucidation of the details of the production of the relief map that benefits from improved knowledge regarding materials, tools, construction techniques and the cost of preparing the model. Additionally, new conclusions are drawn regarding the true utility of maquettes at court and the possible causes of the sudden cancellation of this military project. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) To comprehensively study and better understand urban dynamic processes — such as densification, growth and sprawl, or shrinkage — spatio-temporal databases that allow to track changes of geographic objects like buildings and urban blocks are essential. While comprehensive databases exist for contemporary data, they usually lack a historic dimension. The manual constitution of historic geographic data, be it based on historic maps or aerial images, is a time consuming and laborious process, however. Therefore, we present an approach to semi-automatically extract this data from binary topographic maps with regard to built-up areas at urban block level. The suitability of topographic maps for historic urban analysis has been proven in previous research. To overcome the challenges that are inherent in scanned topographic maps in regard to digital image interpretation we designed a modular process. Among others, these challenges include fused and (multi-)fragmented map objects caused by the overlap of competing content layers in one single binary map. After a preliminary separation of individual map object layers from the map content, the process follows a two-stage top-down approach. At first, the map is organized into street blocks, which after that are re-delineated in regard to built-up area. In doing so, we achieve correctness values ranging from 0.97 to 0.93 for three study sites in Germany. With an increasing number of projects that provide historic topographic maps as georeferenced digital data, our process represents a promising approach to efficiently prepare these historic data for integration into a spatio-temporal database with minimal user intervention.
