[Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Land cover change is one of the major contributors to global change, but long-term, broad-scale, detailed and spatially explicit assessments of land cover change are largely missing, although the availability of historical maps in digital formats is increasing. The problem often lies in efficiency of analyses of historical maps for large areas. Our goal was to assess different methods to reconstruct land cover and land use from historical maps to identify a time-efficient and reliable method for broad-scale land cover change analysis. We compared two independent forest cover reconstruction methods: first, regular point sampling, and second, wall-to-wall mapping, and tested both methods for the Polish Carpathians (20,000 km2) for the 1860s, 1930s and 1970s. We compared the two methods in terms of their reliability for forest change analysis, relative to sampling error, point location and landscape context including local forest cover, area of the spatial reference unit and forest edge-to-core ratio. Our results showed that the point-based analysis overestimated forest cover in comparison to wall-to-wall mapping by 1–3%, depending on the mapping period. The reasons for the differences were mainly the backdating approach and map generalisation rather than the point grid position or sampling error. When we compared forest cover trajectories over time, we found that the point-based reconstruction captured forest cover dynamics with a comparable accuracy to the wall-to-wall mapping. More broadly, our assessment showed that historical maps can provide valuable data on long-term land cover trends, and that point-based sampling can be an efficient and accurate way to assess forest area and change trends. We suggest that our point-based approach could allow land cover mapping across much of Europe starting in the 1800s. Our findings are important because they suggest that land cover change, a key component of global change, can be assessed over large areas much further back in time than it is commonly done. This would allow to truly understand path dependencies, land use legacies, and historical drivers of land cover change. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) A nautical chart provides a schematic view of the seafloor where isobaths (contour lines joining points of same depth) and depth soundings are generalized to highlight undersea features that form navigational hazards and routes. Considering that the process is ultimately driven by features and their significance to navigation, this article proposes a generalization strategy where isobath generalization is controlled by undersea features directly. The seafloor is not perceived as a continuous depth field but as a set of discrete features composed by groups of isobaths. In this article, generalization constraints and operators are defined at feature level and composed of constraints and operators applying to isobaths. In order to automate the process, a multi-agent system is designed where features are autonomous agents evaluating their environment in order to trigger operations. Interactions between agents are described and an example on a bathymetric database excerpt illustrates the feasibility of the approach. [Termes IGN] image LandsatRésumé : (auteur) Aim : Tropical forest degradation is a significant source of carbon emissions due to selective logging, fragmentation and other disturbance factors. However, methods for mapping and monitoring pan-tropical forest degradation are still in their infancy. Here we present a new and automated approach to differentiate forests likely to be affected by degradation dynamics from more structurally intact forests, referred to as hinterland forests.
Location : Pan-tropical.
Methods : Inputs required for hinterland forest mapping include the extent of the initial forest cover and subsequent forest cover loss data, in this case global-scale Landsat-derived tree cover and stand-replacement disturbance maps. User-defined parameters employed to generate the extent and change of hinterland forest include: (1) minimum size of hinterland forest patch, (2) minimum corridor width, (3) distance from disturbance, and (4) extant history.
Results : Hinterland forest extent was mapped using forest cover loss data from 2000 to 2012 and hinterland forest loss was quantified from 2007 to 2013. Lidar-modelled forest height data were shown to be different within and outside hinterland forests, demonstrating the biophysical basis of the hinterland concept in discriminating likely degradation. Overall, hinterland forests experienced an 18% decline from 2007 to 2013. Regional variation in hinterland forest extent and loss was high. Main conclusions : The largest extent of hinterland forests and of hinterland forest loss was found in Latin America, followed by Africa and Southeast Asia, respectively. The highest proportional loss of hinterland forest occurred in Southeast Asia, followed by Africa and Latin America, respectively. Nearly 95% of all 2013 hinterland forests were found in 17 of the 69 tropical forest countries studied. This analysis is based on a survey aiming at contrasting four different representations (supports): a captioned map, an ortophoto, a collection of pictures, and a map accompanied by pictures. The answers were transcribed and constituted four sub-corpus (one per support) on which a discursive analysis was conducted. Different semantic categories were established. They refer to the spotting of visual elements, the inferences between these visual elements and the acoustic atmosphere, and the speaker’s subjectivity. A statistical analysis of the words constituting these categories was conducted in order to contrast the use of the categories according to the support. This analysis revealed that this use depends on the support and that the acoustic atmosphere’s description and perception vary according to the visual representation. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Mosaicking is a key step in the production of digital orthophoto maps (DOMs), especially for large-scale urban orthophotos. During this step, manual intervention is commonly involved to avoid the case where the seamline crosses obvious objects (e.g., buildings), which causes geometric discontinuities on the DOMs. How to guide the seamline to avoid crossing obvious objects has become a popular topic in the field of photogrammetry and remote sensing. Thus, a new semi-global matching (SGM)-based method to guide seamline determination is proposed for urban orthophoto mosaicking in this study, which can greatly eliminate geometric discontinuities. The approximate epipolar geometry of the orthophoto pairs is first derived and proven, and the approximate epipolar image pair is then generated by rotating the two orthorectified images according to the parallax direction. A SGM algorithm is applied to their overlaps to obtain the corresponding pixel-wise disparity. According to a predefined disparity threshold, the overlap area is identified as the obstacle and non-obstacle areas. For the non-obstacle regions, Hilditch thinning algorithm is used to obtain the skeleton line, followed by Dijkstra’s algorithm to search for the optimal path on the skeleton network as the seamline between two orthophotos. A whole seamline network is constructed based on the strip information recorded in flight. In the experimental section, the approximate epipolar geometric theory of the orthophoto is first analyzed and verified, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is then validated by comparing its results with the results of the geometry-based, OrthoVista, and orthoimage elevation synchronous model (OESM)-based methods.
