[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The recent study and classification of over 200 cadastral maps created in the nineteenth century in Catalonia have provided a valuable source of information about the agricultural landscape country’s past, but by linking them with data recorded in tax books known as amillaramientos, it is possible to gain a better knowledge of the past. By applying this method to the 1861 cadastral map of Horta and its corresponding amillaramiento, a planimetric map showing the land use distribution in the town was created. The resulting land use map was subsequently overlaid on top of a digital elevation model to create 3D visualizations which show the altitudinal distribution of crops and other features. Finally, the article explores a way of distributing the results online, making them accessible to the public and increasing the research impact of future findings. Therefore, the method described in this article allows the systematic recreation and distribution of past landscapes by using Catalan cadastral maps of the nineteenth century, something which can help enrich the scientific knowledge of many disciplines. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (auteur) A transboundary river is a river that flows through two or more countries. Due to the international policies of the government in each country, it is difficult to investigate the pollution conditions in a transboundary watershed. In this study, pollution sources in the Red River Valley, Southeast Asia were derived from Google Earth by visual interpretation. Based on the derived pollution sources and a simple scoring system, a pollution index map was produced, which provides useful information for intergovernmental cooperation on the water environment in this transboundary watershed. In addition, the method mentioned in this article suggests an efficient and low-cost way to investigate pollution conditions at large scale, which can also be applied to other transboundary watersheds in the future. [Termes IGN] pondérationRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a method for determining and mapping suitable locations for development using Multi Criteria Analysis and the Analytical Hierarchy Process and considering uncertainties in the process. The method is applied to the case study of Howth (Dublin), where development suitability is assessed against specific protection and conservation areas as well as ground water vulnerability. Uncertainty is incorporated using a Monte Carlo simulation into the Analytical Hierarchy Process calculations to determine criteria weightings. A map is derived, which includes, for all locations, both site suitability for development and the level of uncertainty attached to this suitability. The map combines a double categorization of suitability and uncertainty. The method allows for increased transparency in decision making regarding site suitability for development, as well as increased confidence in decision making to allow for reduced risk in terms of the potential impact of development. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) The visualization of hierarchical and nested spatial regions remains a challenge to cartographers. Despite progress in computer algorithms for visualizing general hierarchical data, mapping spatial hierarchical regions, especially with static, noninteractive means, still requires considerable manual efforts. This paper proposes a two-step algorithm that can automatically recommend perception-based colors and help reveal the hierarchical structure embedded in nested regions. It first systematically sorts regions according to their contiguity and containment relations at multiple hierarchical levels. Then, perception-based colors are generated using the order of regions with the goal of maximizing differentiability between top-level regions while retaining the perceived uniformity of the bottom-level regions. With the coloring scheme recommended by this algorithm, the metric color differences among regions mathematically reflect their hierarchical positions and spatial relations. The resultant colors, therefore, can potentially help map-readers perceive the spatially constrained hierarchy structure built in nested regions.
