[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The arrival of new-generation, high -spatial-resolution satellite imagery (e.g., Ikonos) has opened up new opportunities for detailed mapping and analysis of urban land use. Drawing on the traditional approach used in aerial photointerpretation, this study investigates an "object-oriented" method to classify : large urban area into detailed land-use categories. Spatial metrics and texture measures are used to describe the spatial characteristics of land-cover objects within each land-use region as derived from interpreted aerial photographs. In assessing how land-use categories vary in their spatial configuration, spatial metrics were found to provide the most important information for differentiating urban land uses. A detailed land-use map with nine categories was derived for the Santa Barbara South Coast Region area. Results from our work suggest that the region-based method exploiting spatial metrics and texture measurements is a potential new avenue to extract detailed urban land-use information from high resolution satellite imagery. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (Auteur) Growing concerns about global climate change, biodiversity maintenance, natural resources conservation, and long-term ecosystem sustainability have been responsible for the transformation of traditional single resource management approaches into integrated ecosystem management models. Eco-regions are large ecosystems of regional extent that contain smaller ecosystems of similar response potential and resource production capabilities. They can be used as a geographical framework for organizing and reporting resource information, setting bioecological recovery criteria, extrapolating site-level management, and monitoring global change. The objective of this research is to develop a quantitative, multivariate regionalization model that is capable of delineating eco-regions at multiple levels from remotely sensed information and other environmental and natural resources spatial data. The Spatial Pattern Analysis Model developed in this study uses a region-growing algorithm to generate spatially contiguous regions from primitive polygonal land units. The algorithm merges the most similar pair of neighbouring units at each iteration, based on satisfying certain similarity criteria until all units are grouped into one. This model was utilized to develop an eco-region map of Nebraska with three hierarchical levels. In the mapping process, the STATSGO data set was used to build the primitive map units. Environmental parameters included in the model were multi-temporal AVHRR data, soil rooting depth, organic matter content, available water capacity, and long-term annual averages of water balance and growing degree day totals. We investigated the disaggregation of these parish summaries using the Land Capability for Agriculture and the 1988 Land Cover of Scotland as supporting data sets. It is unlikely that allocation rules to implement the disaggregation should be identical across all parishes. Equally, rules for individual parishes are indeterminate. The 891 parishes were classified into nine classes, then each class was regionalised, creating 91 regions overall. Allocation rules were estimated independently for each region and class. Statistical testing identified greater variations in the rules than is expected by random allocation of regions to classes. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (Auteur) As a transitional belt between the Mu Us Sandy Land and Loess Plateau, the north part of Shaanxi is one of the ecologically vulnerable and areas in northwest China, which are subject to the impacts of both natural factors and human activity. It is therefore of special importance to select such an area to carry out an intensive land use change study and establish a dynamic monitoring system thereof aiming at understanding the change mechanism, human-environmental relationships and producing useful references for the central and local governments in their sustainable land use planning.
Multitemporal Landsat images were used for change detection by adopting a synthetic method including atmospheric correction, Tasseled Cap transformation, indicator differencing, thresholding, change type identification and county-level quantification. A classification on the recent image was conducted to quantify the present land use and cover pattern. A panel analysis calibrated by multivariate regression model was applied to reveal the driving forces of land cover changes and understand the interaction between the human activities and environment modifications by incorporating the results obtained from the change detection with the county-level socio-economic data. The regression modelling results suggest that the vegetation degradation- the predominant change type in the study area, is probably related to the soil erosion (R' = 0.994) and grassland degradation; the farmland extension, occurring principally in the valleys in the Yulin County, is associated with the foodproduct increase (R' = 0.987); the urban extension, spatially related to coal mining, is linked to the urban population growth (R' = 0. 881); and the surface decrease of waterbodies, having taken place in the sandy land, is negatively correlated to the cultivated land change (R' = 0. 562). [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The urban environment is characterized by an intense multifunctional use of available spaces, where the preservation of open green spaces is of special importance. For this purpose, areawide urban biotope mapping based on CIR aerial photographs has been carried out for the large cities in Germany during the last 10 years. Because of dynamic urban development and high mapping costs, the municipal authorities are interested in effective methods for mapping urban surface cover types, which can be used for evaluation of ecological conditions in urban structures and supporting updates of biotope maps. Against this background, airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data of the DAIS 7915 instrument have been analyzed for a test site in the city of Dresden (Germany) with regard to their potential for automated materialoriented identification of urban surface cover types. Previous investigations have shown that the high spectral and spatial variabilities of these data require the development of special methods, which are capable of dealing with the resulting mixedpixel problem in its specific characteristics in urban areas. Earlier, methodological developments led to an approach based on a combination of spectral classification and pixeloriented unmixing techniques to facilitate sensible endmember selection based on the reflective bands of the DAIS instrument. This approach is now extended by a shapebased classification technique including the thermal bands of the DAIS instrument to improve the detection of buildings during the process of identifying seedling pixels, which represent the starting points for linear spectral unmixing. This new approach increases the reliability of differentiation between buildings and open spaces, leading to more accurate results for the spatial distribution of surface cover types. Thus, the new approach significantly enhances the exploitation of the information potential of the hyperspectral DAIS 7915 data for an areawide identification of urban surface cover types.
