[Termes IGN] infrastructure mondiale des données localiséesRésumé : (Auteur) The Geographical Survey Institute of Japan has been implementing the Global Mapping project not only as the participating organization from Japan, but also as the Secretariat of the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping. As the Secretariat, the Geographical Survey Institute of Japan has made efforts to develop and promote the Global Mapping project through international cooperation. Due to these efforts, the development of Global Map version 1 has dramatically progressed toward the goal of the completion of global coverage. As of February 18, 2008, 162 countries and 16 regions are participating in the Global Mapping project (ca 97 % of the whole land area), and 48 countries and 3 regions have released their Global Map version 1 data (ca 49% of the whole land area). The International Steering Committee for Global Mapping plans to release Global Map Version 1 of all land areas of the globe in 2008. [Termes IGN] symbole graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A new standard set of cartographic symbols for landmine hazards and mine actions (e.g., clearances, hazard reductions, mine risk education (MRE), and technical surveys) in humanitarian demining activities is proposed, as well as a five-step approach that was utilised to develop the symbol set and that may be applied to the design of related map symbols in digital mapping environments. To promulgate the new symbol set, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining and the American Geographical Society recently sponsored workshops in New York, NY, and Reston, VA. Workshop attendees, including key representatives from international organisations, private firms, and NGOs, indicated great enthusiasm for a future global standard. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Land use and land-cover (LULC) data provide essential information for environmental management and planning. This research evaluates the land-cover change dynamics and their effects for the Greater Mankato Area of Minnesota using image classification and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) modelling in high-resolution aerial photography and QuickBird imagery. Results show that from 1971 to 2003, urban impervious surfaces increased from 18.3% to 32.6%, while cropland and grassland decreased from 54.2% to 39.1%. The dramatic urbanization caused evident environmental impacts in terms of runoff and water quality, whereas the annual air pollution removal rate and carbon storage/sequestration remained consistent since urban forests were steady over the 32-year span. The results also indicate that highly accurate land-cover features can be extracted effectively from high-resolution imagery by incorporating both spectral and spatial information, applying an image-fusion technique, and utilizing the hierarchical machine-learning Feature Analyst classifier. This research fills the high-resolution LULC data gap for the Greater Mankato Area. The findings of the study also provide valuable inputs for local decision-makers and urban planners. [Termes IGN] service web géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) As with any class of feature, it is important to be able to view woodland or forest at multiple levels of detail. At the detailed level, a map can show clusters of trees, tree types, tracks and paths; at the small scale, say 1:250 000, we can discern broad patterns of forests and other land use, which can inform planners and act as input to land resource models. Rather than store such information in separate databases (requiring multiple points of maintenance), the vision is that the information has a single point of storage and maintenance, and that from this detailed level, various, more generalised forms can be automatically derived. This paper presents a methodology and algorithm for automatically deriving forest patches suitable for representation at 1:250 000 scale directly from a detailed dataset. In addition to evaluation of the output, the paper demonstrates how such algorithms can be shared and utilised via 'generalisation web services', arguing that the sharing of such algorithms can help accelerate developments in map generalisation, and increase the uptake of research solutions within commercial systems.
