[Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) This research investigates the accuracy of pixel- and object-based classification techniques across varying spatial resolutions to identify crop types at parcel level and estimate the area at six test sites to find the optimum data source for the identification of crop parcels. Multi-sensor data with spatial resolutions of 2.5 m, 5 m and 10 m from SPOT5 and 30 m from Landsat-5 TM were used. Maximum Likelihood (ML), Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), and Support Vector Machines (SVM) were used as pixel-based methods in addition to object-based image classification (OBC). Post-classification methods were applied to the output of pixel-based classification to minimize the noise effects and heterogeneity within the agricultural parcels. In addition, processing-time performance of the algorithms was evaluated for the test sites and district scale classification. OBC results provided comparatively the best performance for both parcel identification and area estimation at 10 m and finer spatial resolution levels. SVM followed OBC at 2.5 m and 5 m resolutions but accuracies decreased dramatically with coarser resolutions. ML and SAM results were worse up to 30 m resolution for both crop type identification and area estimation. In general, parcel identification efficiency was strongly correlated with spatial resolution while the classification algorithm was a more effective factor than spatial resolution for area estimation accuracy. Results also provided an opportunity to discuss the effects of image resolution and the classification algorithm independent factors such as parcel size, spatial distribution of crop types and crop patterns. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Persuasive maps are ubiquitous in society, yet cartographers have largely neglected to conduct serious, holistic research on them. Persuasive maps represent a form of visual communication that differs markedly from scientific geovisualization. First, many of these maps' communicative goals are anathema to those of scientific representation. Second, many persuasive maps ignore and defy established cartographic conventions. This article argues two things. First, the cartographic discipline can gain insight about how maps communicate information from the longitudinal and holistic analysis of persuasive maps. By comparing the differences and similarities of persuasive maps to scientific geovisualizations, researchers can begin to understand how persuasive maps communicate differently than scientific ones. Second, breaking persuasive maps down into composite parts may make it possible to identify persuasive map norms (i.e., methods of design that are embraced by producers of persuasive maps). The results of a content analysis of 256 persuasive maps are discussed. The article concludes that it may be possible to take the most statistically significant results from this study to begin identifying different rhetorical styles of persuasive maps. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Optical Earth Observation data with moderate spatial resolutions, typically MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), are of particular value to environmental applications due to their high temporal and spectral resolutions. Time-series of MODIS data capture dynamic phenomena of vegetation and its environment, and are considered as one of the most effective data sources for land cover mapping at a regional and national level. However, the time-series, multiple bands and their derivations such as NDVI constitute a large volume of data that poses a significant challenge for automated mapping of land cover while optimally utilizing the information it contains. In this study, time-series of 10-day cloud-free MODIS composites and its derivatives – NDVI and vegetation phenology information, are fully assessed to determine the optimal data sets for deriving land cover. Three groups of variable combinations of MODIS spectral information and its derived metrics are thoroughly explored to identify the optimal combinations for land cover identification using a data mining tool. The results, based on the assessment using time-series of MODIS data, show that in general using a longer time period of the time-series data and more spectral bands could lead to more accurate land cover identification than that of a shorter period of the time-series and fewer bands. However, we reveal that, with some optimal variable combinations of few bands and a shorter period of time-series data, the highest possible accuracy of land cover classification can be achieved.
