[Termes IGN] transport publicRésumé : (Auteur) The steady increase in automotive vehicle usage in highly populated areas, leading to intensified traffic, suggests the need for new approaches to traffic management and commuting options. Maps as communication products might hold one key to unlocking guided alternative mode choices as standalone products and as service components. However, traditional paper and web-based maps might lack properties and affordances that will guide users to consider alternative commuting opportunities. Through careful determination of content, use and media, our research group assesses the emotional, visual and tactile properties of map affordances to create novel transportation maps. With future user testing and modification, transportation map alternatives could enable and encourage commuters to explore transportation alternatives and select a mode of transportation that is suitable for the changing landscape in commuting and mass transportation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationMots-clés libres : automated cartography route maps symbol placement constraint formulation constraint optimization problem simulated annealing Résumé : (auteur) This paper tackles the representation of routes carried by a physical network infrastructure on a map. In particular, the paper examines the case where each route is represented by a separate colored linear symbol offset from the physical network segments and from other routes—as on public transit maps with bus routes offset from roads. In this study, the objective is to automate the placement of such route symbols while maximizing their legibility, especially at junctions. The problem is modeled as a constraint optimization problem. Legibility criteria are identified and formalized as constraints to optimize, while focusing on the case of hiking routes in a physical network composed of roads and pedestrian paths. Two solving methods are tested, based on backtracking and simulated annealing meta-heuristics respectively. Encouraging results obtained on real data are presented and discussed. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Three-dimensional visualization of subsurface geological boundaries can help researchers gain a better understanding of complex crustal structures in ancient orogenic belts such as the Grenville Province of Ontario, Canada. In this article, the geological structure of the Parry Sound Domain is visualized using SketchUp, with geological control from a regional gravity survey, Lithoprobe seismic transects line 30 and 31, and surface geological boundaries. The multilobed structure of the Parry Sound Domain is part of a tectonic outlier that lies on top of an orogenic thrust stack. Each of the three lobes exhibits a steeper-dipping west side to depth and a shallowly dipping east side to depth. Prior interpretations of the Parry Sound Domain's subsurface structure are modified on the grounds of a multi-disciplinary approach. Three-dimensional visualization of the Parry Sound Domain will improve the current understanding of the subsurface structure in the south-western Grenville Province.
